As a book dragon, there comes a time in your life or once a season where you look ahead to all the wonderful books coming down the pipe and decide which ones you want to read. Sometimes, things are said, deals are made, and souls are traded. Sometimes.
All hypothetically, of course. For those of you who still have souls. The rest of us have to suffer in silence and pout while listening to how great the book is. We know it’s great. That’s why we want it!
2019 has a lot of promising releases coming up, and I’m so eager to get my grubby little hands on them that I can hardly wait.
Since I’m suffering, you should have to suffer, too. So I’m going to share what upcoming books are on my TBR and we can weep together about how far off the release date is. Because misery loves company. And coffee. And probably chocolate, because who doesn’t like chocolate. Maybe misery just loves things that start with C.
This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is books on my spring TBR, but since I’m really bad about actually keeping to TBRs I set out, we’re just going to talk about what I’m looking forward to for the whole year, mmkay?
Warlock Holmes: The Sign of the Nine by G.S. Denning: I just finished book three of this series, and I’m ready for the next one, baby! The only thing better than Sherlock Holmes is Sherlock Holmes + the supernatural. Who knew?! Plus, Irene Adler was introduced in book three, and I’m pretty sure I’m as much in love with her as Watson is. I must find out what happens next!
The Toll by Neal Shusterman: See that plain book up there? That’s because there’s no cover yet. Because Shusterman obviously feeds off the tears and agony of his readers. At this point, I’m pretty certain he has enough to live forever. Or at least until the apocalypse, which is really all you can ask for. I CAN’T HANDLE THIS WAIT. I feel like it’s been an eternity already, and I know some serious stuff is fixing to go down in this book, so just take my money already. *throws money in random directions*
The Boy Who Steals Houses by C. G. Drews: This one does have a cover (and isn’t it gorgeous?!), even though we all know that Cait gains her power from shattering people’s souls. 100% confirmed. The more you suffer, the stronger she gets. I don’t even care what this is about. I loved the writing style in A Thousand Perfect Notes so much that this could literally be nothing more than a ritual that would bind me, body and soul, to Cait’s servitude for the remainder of my natural life, and I’d still probably read it. Just maybe not out loud. You know, just in case.
Kingsbane by Claire Legrand: Listen, Eliana and Simon have some unfinished nonsense that they need to get worked out. Whether it’s kissy nonsense or stabby nonsense or both, I don’t know, but I’m 100% on board for whatever it ends up being.
The Girl The Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young: Sky in the Deep was so much yes that I just can’t even. This is set in the same world, which is a pretty hardcore one with deceit and deception and wars and sharp pointy things and badass women and the men that win their hearts. You know, the important stuff. So I’m pretty sure I’m going to like it.
The Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Azad: So, I’m on a really big djinn reading kick lately, which was only made worse by how much I’m absolutely loving the Rebel of the Sands series. This book sounds right up that alley, and so much more!
Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff: I’ve been waiting to read this whole series, and do you have any idea how much torture this is? I’ve heard book two ends in a wicked cliffhanger, and I’m currently suffering from enough of those at this particular minute, thanks. So I plan on binge reading the series when it comes out. Which can’t come soon enough, as far as I’m concerned, because it sounds bloody brilliant!
Soul of the Sword by Julie Kagawa: This book has a talking sword. Which by the end of the first book becomes more than a talking sword. Of
Guardians of Dawn by S. Jae-Jones: Another one without a cover! It’s a mystery. Judging by the Wintersong duology, though, I’m sure it’ll be gorgeous. I really enjoyed that duology, so at this point, I’m on board with reading anything by S. Jae-Jones. And this has four books in the series, for optimum release torture. It mentions being Sailor Moon-esque, which worries me a little, since I wasn’t really a fan of that anime (shocking, right?), but I’m still giving it a try.
Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir: Necromancy? Check. Bad-ass female protagonist? Check. Snark and sarcasm sharp enough you could cut yourself with it? Check. Yeaaaah, that pretty much does it for me. Plus, it promises to be “the most fun you’ll ever have with a skeleton,” and I’m kind of curious what else people are using skeletons for besides necromancy and what could possibly be more fun than that … but I’m rather afraid to ask …
How to Make Friends with the Dark by Kathleen Glasgow: Every now and then, I love reading a book like this, and it’s just about time. You know, ones that hurt, but in a good way. Ones that rip the heart right out of your chest and hold it in front of you, gloating, while it’s still beating and you’re trying to come to grips with what it’s done to you. You know, Killua style. (Okay, so, I may have watched Hunter x
I’m excited about The Boy Who Steals Houses, too.
My Top Ten Tuesday post.
Yes! I’m just sad that I have to order it from BD, so it might not arrive on release day. D: I’ll have to wait a few days. But ah well. It’s worth it.
There are too many great sounding books coming out. My brain cannot compute this.
RIGHT?! I either need more time or more money. Or maybe both. Oh! Or a time machine! I vote for that one.
I want to read The Boy Who Steals Houses too! I completely forgot about it when I was making my list that I shared on my blog, but I can’t wait to read it!
It’s out soon! The wait is aaaalmost over! Which I think is probably the hardest part of the wait, because now that you can see the finish line, it feels further away. xD
What I wouldn’t give for even a cover of The Toll right now! I am beyond excited for that one! ๐
I’m surprised it’s not released yet, honestly, now that there’s a release date. Which is only five months away. As I said, I’m pretty sure they just enjoy torturing us, because after the last book, surely they know we’re dying here. xD
Great list! I’ll have to check out Julie Kagawa. Soul of the Sword sounds like something I would enjoy and I keep seeing her name everywhere.
(Also- I’m sorry if this comment pops up twice, something wonky happened the first time I tried.)
I’m of the opinion that something wonky almost always happens when computers are involved. xD
If you enjoy anime or Japanese culture and lore, I definitely recommend it. The world is brilliant, and it definitely reads like an anime. ๐
You know- I actually don’t have that much experience with anime, but I’d be willing to give it a try. Japanese culture and lore sounds great!
I have held off on reading Thunderhead because I’m afraid The Toll won’t come out in September like it’s supposed to and I also haven’t started Nevernight (I have both NN and GG) because I want to wait until closer to release time for DD. Ughhhh
WHAT? NO! WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT?! *flails and cries* I would probably just wither and blow away in the wind if they delay it any further.
It’s so hard to wait, isn’t it? Almost makes me want to read it even more. xD I’m so impatient.
So many intriguing titles!! and a new Shusterman… I’m curious!!
Funny enough … I found out about a Shusterman novel I didn’t know existed through today’s TTT, too. xD It’s called Challenger Deep. Released 2015, but I guess I just missed it. Just in case you were looking for even more Shusterman. ๐
ooo thanks for the tip!
I love the cover of Darkdawn. I’ve never read the series but that cover is so gorgeous. I’ll have to check it out.
Tina @ As Told By Tina
Isn’t it pretty? All the covers for the series (Nevernight and Godsgrove are the first two) are super striking. Normally, I like buying e-books, but man, these covers were just too pretty not to own physical copies of. Because I am a very shallow bookdragon. xD
I can hardly wait for The Girl the Sea Gave Back! And that cover is amazing:-)
Yes, it’s gorgeous! So eye-catching. If it’s anything like Sky in the Deep, I’ll love it!
I adored Illuminae, but haven’t taken the plunge with the Nevernight series yet. Hope you enjoy!
I haven’t read Illuminae yet, but I’ve heard so many good things about it that I’m going to have to pick it up!
I love this list! The girl the sea gave back is on the top of my list, but I donโt think itโll be out before mid year. I donโt remember but in any way, this book is heck yes! ๐
Thanks! It’s not supposed to be out until September. =/ In fact, like, 90% of the books I’m most looking forward to are releasing towards the end of the year. For an optimum level of torment and anguish, I suppose? xD
Ahahha! I know exactly what you mean. This book is at the top of my list. Just need to find a way to get my hand on it before then!
I assume it’ll be on NetGalley and probably Edelweiss+ a couple months before release. I did manage to get an ARC of Sky in the Deep waaaay back when, so I might give it a go and cross my fingers on this one, too. xD
Iโm looking forward to it! Hope to get it too. ๐
I really need to start on that Jay Kristoff series, but I think it may have to wait until next year. I have way too many series on the go right now! I’m also very interested in The Boy who Steals Houses.
Too many series? Pshaw. Is that a thing? *shoves endless pile of ongoing series I’m reading behind a door* I’m sure I don’t know what you mean. To be fair, Darkdawn doesn’t actually come out until September, so if you want to read the entire series in one go, it actually makes good sense to read it next year. ๐ See? We’ve found the one sensible person among us. Huzzah! Usually, I’d wait and get the book for Christmas and read it next year, too, but my birthday just happens to be at the end of September, so … convenient. :3
If you haven’t read Cait’s debut yet, A Thousand Perfect Notes, it’s a fantastic read and can whittle away some of that time while you wait for TBWSH. ๐
LOL. I hope you survive the wait for all of these. It’s torture, isn’t it??
Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

I mean, that’s sort of the catch-22, isn’t it? If I don’t survive, I don’t get to read the books, and that’s unacceptable. xD
Heh, Wednesday is the best day for a TTT. ๐ All the best people are fashionably late, anyway.
Haha, I love your post title. Iโm excited for The Toll, too. I NEED it! I hope you enjoy all these!
Thank you. xD I felt like it almost, but not quite, portrayed the desperation I feel. Especially for The Toll, because that ending? Ugh.
Oooh, I’m also excited for The Girl the Sea Gave Back and The Candle and the Flame! Omg, why do all these upcoming YA fantasy releases have such beautiful covers? I want to buy them allllllllll
I hope you enjoy all these books when you pick them up!
Ugh, right?! I’m trying to downsize my library (because hubby’s weird about that) by buying more digital, but gooooosh. I want all of these books on my shelf. Also, the money to buy all these books to put on my shelf. xD
