It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
When is The Toll coming out?
Why isn’t it out yet?
What am I doing with my life?!
Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

This one was … I don’t even know. There were parts I loved and parts I didn’t. The writing was gorgeous in some places and very tedious in others. I really enjoyed the almost surreal, fairy tale quality of the first two-thirds of the story. The dual plotlines worked well for me, because I saw early on how they connected and really enjoyed it. Where it fell apart for me was the last third, where the story basically becomes a standard quest to overthrow the Big Bad, and it all felt so clean and easy and tied in a neat little bow.
Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend

THIS. BOOK. IS. AWESOME. Everyone who recommended it is right. I like it so much already that I grabbed the sequel from the library because I know I’m going to want it ASAP. Morrigan is an endearing MC with just enough snark and sass to keep me interested. The world is fun and whimsical. And Jupiter? Oh, dear Jupiter. I’m not sure if he’s supposed to have a British accent, but in my mind he totally does. You know, the really lovely sort that’s upbeat and lilts up at the end of words, as if it’s making the language dance like a puppet on strings. I might be just a teensy bit in love with him
Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Status: pg 19/599
This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.
The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.
BRIEFING NOTE: Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.
I actually started this on my Kindle. Fun fact: my Kindle will not zoom in on images. Also, this book is 100% images. So … problem. But I LOVED the beginning, so I rushed out and ordered it off Amazon so I can physically read it. Guys, if you have the option, I would for sure recommend reading this as a physical book. This book is an EXPERIENCE. The formatting is also a big part of that. I am so looking forward to digging into this and moving on to the sequels.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC of Romanov by Nadine Brandes, which comes out May 7, so it’s time to read and review it! I enjoyed Fawkes, despite a few sticking points, but I love the idea of mixing fantasy and historical fiction. The Malice of Fortune is a book club book. The other members I’ve talked to so far weren’t fans, but they seemed to think I would like it, and the summary sounds interesting, so I’m ready to give it a try.
Illuminae sounds pretty interesting. I like it when formatting and documents become a part of the story itself. I hope a physical copy makes it even better for you to dig into. Happy reading!

I’ve already been flipping through the book, and I LOVE it. I’ve never seen a book like this, and I can’t recommend it enough. The authors really played with the format to bring a really different experience, and it’s so unique.
I love when a book like Nevermoor is pronounced “awesome,” as any worries are put to rest. The book that you loved and didn’t love is probably one for me to avoid. Enjoy your upcoming reads, and thanks for visiting my blog.
It’s rare to find truly awesome books. Probably because I’m picky. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But I can’t recommend Nevermoor enough. Thanks!
In so pleased you loved Nevermoor, that series is all sorts of awesome I’m looking forward intensely to book 3!
I already looked up when book 3 was coming out, but it doesn’t seem to have a date yet. xD Sad. I haven’t even read book 2 yet, but that’s how much I enjoyed the first one lol.
No as far as I’m aware Jessica is still working on it!!
Yaaas, the whole Illuminae Files series is awesome! The books are so much fun to read — totally worth the buys! 😍
I’m already sort of hovering on the edge of going ahead and buying the other two or waiting until I actually finish the first one. xD I can’t believe it took me so long to get to reading these.
If you’re anything like me and have little self-control then you should buy the next two books 🤣 Haha no, but honestly, they’re such fast and fun reads, you’ll get through them in no time!
Mmm … I’m pretty sure I have no self-control. The circuits have been fried, and I’ve just given up on replacing them. I did notice that despite its length, I picked up Illuminae for just a few minutes of downtime yesterday and got through a good bit, so I think you’re definitely right. Obviously, I need to go order them right away. 😛
Haha fantastic! Hope you enjoy the rest of the series 😃
I’ve not read any of your choices. I do like the look of illuminae.
I’d highly recommend it. 🙂 Very much enjoying it so far!
YESSSSS, ILLUMINAE!!!! Such a great series, Sammie! 😀
I’m definitely loving it so far! I’m not sure what took me so long to read it, honestly. xD Silly me.
Don’t worry, there are *plenty* of series like that for me XD I just get so excited when I hear people are reading or have read The Illuminae Files because then I know I get to gush about the characters with them 😂 I can’t wait to hear what you think of the series!
Yes! Gushing about the same characters is the BEST. I finished Illuminae and just … ugh. I LOVE AIDAN, even if he’s terrifying and brutal. Definitely a favorite. Kady was pretty bad-ass, too.
The characters coming up in the trilogy are also so great! AIDAN is just… WOW 😂 I don’t have words for AIDAN.
At first, I was like yeah, okay. AI. And then I got to “Am I not merciful,” and it’s always a bad sign when an AI says that. And then “O Captain, my Captain.” Phew. Once I hit that part, I knew we were gonna get along just fine. xD
I’m so glad you loved Nevermoor! It’s so wonderful. I am also a teensy bit in love with Jupiter. XD
I mean, I’d honestly be suspicious of someone if they weren’t in some way, shape, or form. How can you resist that? xD
Wow a few awesome looking books there! I want to read Illuminae x
I haven’t finished it yet, but I already recommend it. Loving it so far!
