Upcoming 2019 Releases Everyone Should Read

Posted June 18, 2019 by Sammie in book list, chat with me, TBR, top ten tuesdays / 39 Comments

Okay, sooo … that title’s a bit lofty, but I feel like I do so many TBR posts that I should open this one with a bang. Because why not?

Obviously, I have no idea if everyone should read these books. Because I haven’t read them yet. Duh. But everyone should want to read these books because they sound freaking amazing! I mean, unless you’re allergic to awesomeness. But if that were the case, you wouldn’t be here, now would you? 😉

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is most anticipated releases of the second half of 2019.

And y’all, there are a lot of good books coming out at the end of this year. I’m convinced it’s some sort of conspiracy. Worst yet, I’m fairly certain none of our bosses will see this as a valid reason for why we obviously need November off to catch up on all of them. Bosses, am I right? So unreasonable.

The Toll    Darkdawn    Gideon the Ninth

The Toll by Neal Shusterman (November 5)
If you’ve ever read this blog at all, you’ll know that this is THE release for me this year. I’ve already preordered it. I almost never preorder books. Thunderhead broke me, and I’m just clinging to a desperate sliver of hope that somehow The Toll will put at least part of me back together, in some small way. I would even consider trading my firstborn for an ARC of this. I mean, she’s awfully mouthy and sarcastic, and they’d probably give her back before the day is out, so maybe that’s not much of a trade, but still!

Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff (September 3)
I’ve been waiting to binge read this series until they were all released, because Destiny @ Howling Libraries was nice enough to inform me that there’s a wicked cliffhanger at the end of book two. Since my quota of soul-shattering cliffhangers has already been met (see: above), I decided to just wait to read it. Even if the wait is also slowly sucking the life out of me.

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (September 10)
Two words: Lesbian. Necromancers. Um, yes. I’m actually super lucky, because I got an ARC of this! I’m still waiting until closer to release to read it … but I’m not sure exactly how long I can wait, because it sounds so dang good. But I have a big mouth (I’m sure you didn’t notice) and I’m bad at keeping secrets and saving reviews, so I try to read books closer to release so that I can totally yell from the rooftops about them.

Tristan Strong Punches A Hole In The Sky    The Library of the Unwritten    Gideon the Ninth

Tristan Strong Punches A Hole In The Sky by Kwame Mbalia (October 15)
When I first heard about this one, expected release was 2020, so I could not be more thrilled that it’s releasing THIS YEAR! I’m ready for this. I’ve been loving the idea of the Rick Riordan Presents releases and the new diversity they bring. But black gods? Yes, please. I admit, I’m a bit skeptical about turning John Henry and Brer Rabbit into gods (considering there are enough black cultures to pick actual gods from, like Anansi), but I’m honestly just so excited for this that of course I’m going to give it a chance.

The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith (October 1)
I honestly can’t figure out why any bookdragon wouldn’t read this. It’s about a library where the characters in the books come to life. Also, a power struggle between Heaven and Hell. I honestly don’t know if there’s a more perfect combination of literary elements. And it’s going to be a series! Count me in!

Loki: Where Mischief Lies by Mackenzie Lee (September 3)
So … I haven’t read anything by Mackenzie Lee yet. Trust me, I’m just as shocked as you are, considering I own two separate versions of A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. But I’ve heard so many good things about her as an author, and let’s be honest … it’s Loki. I was obviously going to read it, even if someone said she couldn’t write her way out of a paper bag. Which clearly is not the case. I’ve always been a fan of OG Loki from Norse mythology, long before I even knew Loki existed in the MCU. But the MCU version is cool, too, but I’m all for a Loki self-discovery adventure.

Verify    Sword and Pen    Scary Stories For Young Foxes

Verify by Joelle Charbonneau (September 24)
I still just can’t get enough of dystopia, and this book was comped with Arc of a Scythe on Edelweiss+, so that was going to be a yes for me. I’m so lucky to have gotten an ARC, and I can’t wait to pick it up! Also, the idea of a dystopian world without lies sounds like it’ll make for a heck of an interesting story.

Sword and Pen by Rachel Caine (September 3)
I’m still on book two of this series, but that doesn’t stop me from being excited about book five releasing. Mainly because I hope to binge read them between now and then. You know, like you do. Ink and Bone was a great read, and I love the world that Caine has set up. I’m looking forward to going back there soon.

Scary Stories For Young Foxes by Christian McKay Heidicker (August 6)
This sounds hecka cute, okay? And because I’m a really big baby who scares easily, this also sounds about on the level of spookiness that I can handle. I’m also not sure what it is about fox books, but I seem to be reading a lot of them, so why ruin a good thing?

Sisters of Shadow and Light

Sisters of Shadow and Light by Sara B. Larson (November 5)
I actually really have almost no idea what this book is about. The blurb doesn’t really say a whole lot about what the plot is so much as the characters. So I have no idea if it’ll be my sort of book or not. But I love the idea of sisterly love and all the complicated, messy emotions that come with it. I’m looking forward to learning more about this one!

  1. Oh some amazing books on here some I’ve heard of (The TOLL!!! How did I forget on mine 🤦🏼‍♀️) and some I’ve not! Great list x

    • Ha, it’s hard to keep up with what’s coming out when! I didn’t realize until today that The Queen of Nothing is coming out in 2019 and not 2020! So I have all the regrets now that I didn’t add it to my list. xD

    • BUT I’VE MADE MYSELF SO COMFY HERE! And I just finished building my pillow fort. I’m totally willing to share. Just don’t throw me out now. D: xD

      • Dude. No one wants to be in my head but hey if you are comfortable I ain’t gonna kick you out. But sooner or later you gonna regret it. Kaz is rattling around up there as it is.

        • Oh good. My head’s scary and, quite frankly, a bit crowded. I feel like a vacation’s in order. I’m sure it’ll be fiiiine.

((Also, can you link me to your post?! I can’t find iiiit. Or have you not posted yet today? I feel so incapable of using electronics lately, so I could just be missing something. xD It’s been one of those weeks.))

  2. A vacation! Lol… hey! If I can amuse I’ve done my job. As for this particular post, I am not doing this post. I posted my review of Dear Wife. I do mine a bit different. Like I did my Summer Fling which runs basically June through August with the author interviews and reviews and then I will (if this one goes well) do a fall one that will run Sept to Nov or mid dec… so a lot of the ones you mentioned will be in my fall guide.. or whatever that ends up being called.

    • Oh, I apologize. When you said your list, I thought you meant your TTT list. I didn’t think until after that you meant the list of books you’re looking forward to. xD I’m sick today, and my brain is currently melting, ha. Your plan for posting sounds like a good, sound one!

      • That’s ok… it did sound that way.. I just meant the list in my head — you should trip right over it while on said vacation lol, and books I have arcs of (see the special stacking the Shelves arc edition featuring liam, Gomez and pavel)

        • As long as the list in your head doesn’t somehow start creeping into my TBR, we’re all good. xD I do enough tripping where I’ll forgive it for that, at least. 😉

          • Well I am the great enabler so I promise nothing. Plus the boys are all so cute posing with the books!

  3. All of these sound so good and are must-reads. I’m excited. Also, side note, about my general dumbness: I keep reading The Toll’s title as The Troll. And then, purely because I’m exhausted and am TERRIBLE at sleeping so I’m slap happy, I’m picturing the cover as some of those green haired trollies dolls instead of what the cover art actual is. Yikes!

    • Oh my gosh, that’s so funny. xD I can definitely see how you’d see “The Troll” if you looked quickly without paying attention. Maybe a suggestion for Neal Shusterman’s next book after this series, yeah? 😉 I’d be interested to see where he’d take that one! lol.

  4. Jessica @ The Psychotic Nerd

I just preordered The Toll today so I’m definitely looking forward to that one! I’m also looking forward to Verify and Tristan Strong Punches A Hole In The Sky! I haven’t heard of The Library of the Unwritten but it sounds very interesting!

    • I’ve already preordered my copy, too. :3 I can’t wait. Here’s the hoping book three doesn’t destroy our souls any more than book two has.

  5. Mary K Reads

I haven’t heard of The Library of Unwritten but it sounds like a bookworm’s dream so definitely adding it to my list.. The Loki book also sounds very promising. Can’t wait for all these new releases!

    • I sure hope it lives up to its promise. It sounds so good, and I want it to be a new favorite series. xD I have high hopes for that The Library of the Unwritten.

    • Same! But I was recommended to wait until book three comes out, so that’s what I’ve been doing lol. Then I don’t have to wait for cliffhangers. :3

    • RIGHT?! I mean, it was the most brilliant, spectacular, horrifying, scream-inducing ending ever and I loved it, but … The Toll needs to come out sooner. They even pushed it back from September to November, which makes me sad. But I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait. 😀

      • It was like the ultimate “when all hell breaks loose this is what is going to happen” and then BOOM. I really hope it’s epic. I have a feeling it’ll be worth the wait (although it’s always so nerve wracking waiting for sequels to come out)! 😂

        • I mean, Thunderhead was pretty epic in general, so I can’t see how The Toll would by any different. I especially loved the Thunderhead’s reaction at the end of book two, though. I sort of squeed when it happened, because everything fell so nicely into place lol.

  6. Nooo I didn’t realize tristan strong is already pbulishing this year. I was still focused on that 2020 date haha. And its near my birthday too haha.

    • I didn’t know, either! I sort of cheated and just sorted my Goodreads list by release date and was like … wait, something’s not right here. There were actually several books I was expecting in 2020 that are being released at the end of this year, and I am soooo not complaining about that. 😉

  7. I *may* have giggled and clapped like a little girl when I first heard of The Library of the Unwritten. 😛 It does sound like the perfect book-lover’s book, doesn’t it?! And gosh, I really want to try Loki, and I’ve been a big fan of Mackenzi Lee’s previous books, but some of the recent reviews I’ve seen for Madness Blooms has been really shocking and off-putting, so I’m kind of torn about that.

    • I’m pretty sure that’s the perfect reaction to hearing what it’s about. xD

I’ve seen some of the buzz around that, but honestly, her team says they’re working on changing things, and it’s not due for release until 2020, so I’m on the fence about it, too. It sounds like they’re not just ignoring what people are saying about it, which is cool.
