It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
What’s at the bottom of the Marianas Trench?
Why do ships disappear in the Bermuda Triangle?
What if there’s something lurking in the deep?!

Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think youโ€™ll read next?

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

A review for this should be coming either this week or next week, but I was a little underwhelmed with it. The plot, action, and setting were all fantastic. The juxtaposition between Rielle and Eliana as they try to adjust to their roles and discover who they are is fabulous. In the end, though, it just had too much romance for me, and it felt like the plot took a back seat to that. Plus, all the characters felt so different from Furyborn that I found I really didn’t like anyone except Rielle and Remy. And maybe Simon for 50% of the book.

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant
โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โœฉโœฉ || Goodreads
If you can turn your science brain off, this book is probably four stars. I tried really, really hard, but I just couldn’t. It read like one of those creature in the deep movies, and I love those, which is what I loved about this. The creep factor was definitely there. Grant did a fabulous job of building suspense, but then she’d turn around and undermine herself by adding in perspectives that told the reader what was going to happen before it happened, which destroyed some of the suspense she’d carefully built. I wasn’t a huge fan of the characters, except for Michi and Jacques and Jillian and Theo. Those four were such underrated treasures. Ultimately, it felt like the book tried to do too much science, so every time I tried to turn my science brain off and just enjoy the book for what it was, it kept switching back on and complaining about things that just didn’t make any sense. Which was a lot of it.

Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenzaโ€”but who knows what they’ll find seven months after the invasion?

Meanwhile, Kady’s cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza’s ragtag underground resistance. When Rhysโ€”an old flame from Asha’s pastโ€”reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict.

With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heroes will fall, and hearts will be broken.

They say that all good things must come to an end, but, like, I didn’t think they meant this series. What kind of nonsense is that?! I have so many other things I should be reading right now, but I don’t want to wait too long and forget what happened in the previous books. So here we are. Clinging to every word and enjoying my last first visit to this world.

Can I just take a moment to say how much I love and appreciate AIDAN? He’s so taken for granted, especially on that ship, okay? He deserves a hug.

Upcoming Reads
Lincoln's Last Days     The Graveyard Book     David Mogo, Godhunter

Like always, I’ve waited until the last possible minute to squeeze in the book club book, which this month is Lincoln’s Last Days. Seems like more my kind of reading, and I’m looking forward to picking it up. Then, I’ve got a library loan for The Graveyard Book, so even though I have other things I should be picking up, I’m squeezing this in before I get slapped back on the hold list. Then it’s back to ARCs for me! I’ve got David Mogo, Godhunter, which I was super excited to come across, because I’ve been wanting more books about the Orisha that actually have the gods front and center. The idea of a godhunter definitely caught my interest, and it’s set in Lagos, Nigeria, and I’m not really seeing anything not to like here.

  1. Since I don’t have a science brain at all, I loved Into the Drowning Deep๐Ÿ˜‰ And thanks for reminding me I STILL need to read Obsidio!

    • I definitely still enjoyed it. Just not as much, I think, if I could have stopped thinking about the science behind it lol. I just found out that Mira Grant has a new novella coming out soon, too: In the Shadow of Spindrift House. I’m looking forward to that now. It sounds really good. Sort of Hill House-y.

Ha, anytime! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Glad to remind you.

  2. I havenโ€™t read Into the Drowning Deep, but I have read Mira Grantโ€™s zombie series – I donโ€™t remember the name of the series itself, but the first book was called Feed. That series was very good. I also very highly recommend The Graveyard Book. Hope you enjoy it!

    • I just put a hold on Feed once I finished Into the Drowning Deep! So glad to hear you enjoyed it. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m looking forward to reading more of her (and I see she’s got a new novella coming out, too, In the Shadow of Spindrift House, which I want to read). So glad to hear that, too. I should be starting it later today, and I’m looking forward to it!

      • The thing that was interesting about Feed is that itโ€™s not a typical zombie apocalypse novel. The outbreak happened several years ago and the main characters are all young adults who have grown up in this post-zombie world. It was interesting to see how the world changed to cope with the fallout and how they managed things knowing that zombies are still out there and anyone is at risk of โ€œamplifying.โ€

        • I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s not your typical zombie book, which is the only reason I’m really eager to pick it up, since I’m really not a huge fan of zombies. xD So I’m interested to see how it’s different!

    • I didn’t realize that, but now that you mention it, I definitely see the similarities. xD I’m enjoying it so far, though. :3 Bod is an adorable little thing.

    • Yeees! Peer pressure! You know you wanna. ๐Ÿ˜‰ To be honest, I still have so many Gaiman books to get through that it’s not even funny.

  3. Yvo

That’s a shame about Into The Drowning Deep! I’d probably have the same issue as well… I hate when things don’t make sense and I’m almost never able to switch my ‘science brain’ off.

    • I tend to be able to during movies, as long as they don’t get all sciency. When they start talking science, I’m like … pffft, that’s not how that works. I just watched The Meg recently, and I enjoyed that, though I’ve never read the book. I’m sort of a fan of big monsters eating people, though. xD It’s a guilty pleasure of mine.

    • Trust me, you reeeeeally do. I started reading it yesterday evening and finished this afternoon, because I just could not put the dang thing down. I laughed. I cried. I yelled a lot. Gosh, Obsidio was so good! I don’t think there could’ve been a more perfect ending to the series. Are you still here? Why? Go find a copy of Obsidio, dude! ๐Ÿ˜›

  4. I really should read the Illuminae Files series. I’ve heard great things about that trilogy. I’m reading Neil Gaiman in November, and The Graveyard Book is on my list, so I hope it is good. Hope you have a great week of reading and finish your book club read in time – I tend to be late on those as well.

    • I can’t recommend the Illuminae Files enough! Phew, it’s a rollercoaster of a ride. It’s fantastic.

Oooh, that sounds fun. A whole month of Gaiman? I’m already 20% through the book (it’s gone really fast so far. I’m surprised) and I’m enjoying it. ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope you like it when you get to it, too.

Thanks! I always end up finishing on time, though I literally wait until the very last minute most often haha. Most times I seem to finish the day OF book club, and I’m really trying to get out of that habit. xD It’s such a nasty one.

      • I just read Good Omens. I had never read Pratchett or Gaiman. Based off of the parts that I enjoyed in Good Omens, I think I am a Gaiman not a Pratchett, so I am looking forward to reading more of his work.

Have you ever finished a book club book while still in the parking lot or driveway of the book club meeting? I have done that at least twice.

        • I hope you enjoyed it! I love Pratchett more than Gaiman, even though they’re both great.

Ha, yes! I’ve finished the last pages of one while discussion was starting before. *cough* But that only happened once, and I only had a couple pages left.

  5. A Morrow

I have so many things to say about your list! Haha. I can’t wait to hear what you think of David Mogo, Godhunter! I just reviewed that one and I had a lot of thoughts I had to weigh, very curious how someone else will feel. I also was a little underwhelmed by Kingsbane, which was a bummer. What I really felt I needed to comment on was Obsidio though!! I just finished this series for the first time too (this month!) and LOVED IT. I wish there was more!! AIDAN really is so under-appreciated. I hope you love it!

    • Oooh, I didn’t realize that! I just read your review, and I’m so glad you have positive things to say about it. ๐Ÿ˜€ I’ve really seen a lot of mixed reviews, but ultimately, if it’s a book about Orisha, I’ll read it. Bonus points for urban fantasy and #ownvoices. I should be picking it up in a few days. :3

I see that a lot of people seem to have loved the end of Kingsbane, but oh, it made me so mad that I wanted to throw the book. xD I guess I’m in the minority there lol.

I JUST FINISHED OBSIDIO TODAY AND I’M STILL BROKEN. Ahhhh, there’s no words to express how much I loved it. xD And AIDAN is just … I need more. Why isn’t there more?! I read this thing in a day and a half, because once I started, I just couldn’t put it down lol.

  6. Neil Gaiman’s been hit or miss for me. He has a cult following, it seems, but I never got the appeal. I’ve heard The Graveyard Book is good, though, so maybe one day I should check it out.

    • I don’t know. I’m not really in the “know” as far as other followers go with authors. his nonfiction tends to be more miss than anything with me, or at least I have a hard time getting through it sometimes. But I love his fiction so far (although, to be fair, I’ve only read a few of his books). I guess I just love his writing style and his ideas. I’m about 20% into it now, and I have to say that I do like it! It’s a super easy, quick read, I guess, and it’s been enjoyable so far! Waiting for the plot to pick up a bit, though. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. booksandbabble

I read The Graveyard Book years & years ago but I remember really enjoying it, I think I gave it 5 stars, hopefully you enjoy it too! I also really need to start the Illuminae Files but I think Iโ€™m a bit intimidated by the hype ๐Ÿ™ˆ

    • Thanks! I didn’t pick it up for a long time because of the hype and the fact that I’m usually really not a fan of sci-fi when it comes to other planets or spaceships. But I hope you do decide to read it at some point and enjoy it. :3 I know I sure did.

  8. I borrowed a copy of Into the Drowning Deep from my library, but I havenโ€™t managed to read it. Iโ€™ve heard itโ€™s quite creepy, but Iโ€™m intrigued by your comment that you have to turn your science brain off, which is almost impossible for me.

    • Grant definitely nails the creep factor, in my opinion! I’d be interested to hear your thoughts once you finish on whether you agreed or not. :3

  9. It’s so weird. I love Seanan McGuire’s books when she’s writing as Seanan McGuire, but I can never get into her Mira Grant books. I liked Into the Drowning Deep when it was a short fic, but the full novel was a meh for me. I’m definitely a “can’t turn my science brain off” reader. ๐Ÿ˜€ I’m reading This is How You Lose the Time War right now and LOVING IT. It’s such a fantastic enemies-to-lovers story. <3

    • They’re very different genres and tones, so I can understand that. I really like her whimsical writing style and her creative ideas in the Wayward Children series, for example.

Oh, I’ve seen that book around, but never actually paid much attention to the blurb. But it sounds awesome! Definitely adding it to my TBR. Love me some hate-to-love. :3 Thanks for the recommendation!

      • Wayward Children is definitely my favourite of hers right now. Though I still need to read Middlegame and I’ve been hearing amazing things about that one.

And yay! Glad to hear! It’s got super flowery prose, though, so I hope you’re into that. ๐Ÿ˜€
