WWW Wednesday (August 28, 2019)

It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
What if someone could see all your most shameful moments?
Would you look them in the eye?
What are you most ashamed of?

Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

Confession: I did very little actual reading this week. Whoops?

Actually, on Thursday, as I was taking my offspring to school, there was an injured dog limping down the middle of the road, and I sort of waylaid my day to bring her to the vet and track down her owner. Long story short, she was abandoned.

Sooo … meet Thalia, the newest member of our family.

Instead of reading, I’ve spent all week making sure her injured leg was healing, introducing her to the other animals, and making her comfortable in general. It was worth it.

Gideon the Ninth

Guys. Oh my god. I want to write a review for this, but I’m far too busy screaming into the void to pause to word, okay? I had such high hopes for this, and it did not disappoint. I had a slow start getting into it, but I love Gideon so much, and I came to appreciate most of the characters. While it’s true that there are nine necromancers and nine cavaliers, each one has a slightly different power and fighting style, which kept things exciting and different. This book was just packed full of action, girls flirting, forced partnerships, banter, sarcasm, and all sorts of good necromancy action. I got to the end and wanted to cry, because there’s no ETA on the next book yet and I need it nooooow. T_T

The Shamer's Daughter

Dina has unwillingly inherited her mother’s gift: the ability to elicit shamed confessions simply by looking into someone’s eyes. To Dina, however, these powers are not a gift but a curse. Surrounded by fear and hostility, she longs for simple friendship.

But when her mother is called to Dunark Castle to uncover the truth about a bloody triple murder, Dina must come to terms with her power–or let her mother fall prey to the vicious and revolting dragons of Dunark.

Looking at my status, I guess I’m already a ways into this book? But … I don’t really have any opinions on it yet? It’s a super quick and easy read so far, and I’m enjoying it. I just don’t think it’s really made an impression, if that makes sense. I’m still waiting for something to stick. The idea for the power is really neat, and I like the way it means Dina is ostracized. It’s setting up an interesting arc, and I look forward to seeing where it goes.

I didn’t get nearly as far as I’d hope reading-wise this week, which means the rest of the Shamer Chronicles is still on the schedule. They’re all pretty short, so I’m fairly confident I can get through them this week. I sort of love the feeling of being able to read a series straight through. It’s something that pretty much never happens to me anymore? Wow, I’ve forgotten how nice it is.

  1. I’m very sad I couldn’t do Gideon. I think at the end of the day it is the genre. I think Space Operas and me just don’t mix :/

    • Nothing wrong with that! I think it definitely takes a certain kind of reader to enjoy. I usually don’t do space operas, either, but I loved these characters, so it worked for me.

        • The banter was definitely one of my favorite parts. xD I’ve picked up some very colorful insults that I’ve stored away just in case. 😉

          • Hahaha!!! Bah! Can you imagine what a bunch of us ripping on someone would sound like? We would make each other cackle quoting characters. That would be a reality show!

          • You should totally pitch that. I’m not sure how many people would watch five readers locked in a house together, because mostly they’d probably spent the time reading separately, avoiding each other, etc., but hey, there’s never a lack of creative insults, at least. xD Plus, lots of readers like role-playing, right? Can’t be hard to instigate a pretend war between them lol.

          • I heard about a youtube channel where YA readers over 21 get dripsy and talk about books. What about youtube smack downs???

            Oh.
            My.

            What did I just do?

  2. I’m so happy to see your rating for Gideon! I know readers are very divided with this book. I hope I feel the same way you do😁

    • I noticed that, too. I think you have to really like Gideon’s sarcasm and dry humor. You have to like unsympathetic characters. Also, the book is DARK, so there’s that. It feels like it fits into its niche nicely, but a lot of things have to line up to make it love versus like.

  3. Hi Thalia! Such a cutie. I’m glad you were able to take care of her, since obviously someone else didn’t. That’s a completely understandable reason for not getting as much reading done as you had planned.

    • Thanks! We’re pretty glad, too. xD It’s always hard when there’s a stray dog, because you never know their temperament before stopping, but she’s such a sweetie. Couldn’t ask for a gentler, lovier dog.

  4. Yvo

Aww that’s so kind of you to adopt her! I hope her leg heals soon. I’m definitely curious about Gidion The Ninth! Have a wonderful week and happy reading.

    • Thanks! No limping on it today, so it’s looking up! Which means little miss is all about getting in trouble today going where she’s not supposed to. xD

If you like dark fantasy, I’d highly recommend it! It’s definitely dark, but soooo good.

I’m so excited to read Gideon the ninth! I’m really happy to see you loved it!
I’m currently reading Tuning darkness into light, and I’m listening to Deviate!
    Also your dog looks cute!!

    • I hope you love it! It’s got all the best awful characters. xD

Oh, how are you liking DEV1AT3? That’s the one by Jay Kristoff, right?! I pretty much need to read all of his work now, and I bought LIFEL1K3 not long ago, but I just haven’t had a chance to read it yet.

      And thank you!

      • evelynreads1

Yes it is! I really recommend it, and if you’re into audio I would recommend that as well!

  6. OMG, Thalia is SO CUTE! Wishing her a quick recovery and happy transition in your family! (aka, getting along with your other animals). How many other animals does your family have?

Ahhh, so glad to hear that you enjoyed Gideon the Ninth! I’m getting so hype for its release! And oooh, The Shamer’s Daughter looks interesting—I’m curious to hear your thoughts on the series!

    • Thanks! She’s really fit in well so far. We’ve got three cats and three dogs. She’s number four. :3

I hope you enjoy Gideon! I loved it so much. The Shamer’s series was okay. I think I enjoyed it less as it went on, but the first book was pretty fun.

      • I’m glad to hear it! And wow, 7 animals? That’s so awesome and impressive! And they all get along? My family has 3 cats and one dog. Our one cat likes to bully the dog while the other two cats are scared of her. 😅 😒

And wait, you finished the Shamer’s series already? Dang!

        • Oh, it’s a madhouse. We are now fostering five kittens, too. Pray for my household and our sanity. xD They all get along … mostly. They have their little animal squabbles now and then, like you do. It’s so funny how they have such different personalities, isn’t it? One of our cats thinks it’s a dog and just immediately loves everyone and everything. The one is absolutely terrified of everything and runs and hides, and the other is indifferent and hates everyone equally until she decides she wants pets lol.

Yeah, they’re super short! The longest book is, like, 300 pages, and the others are around 250, I think. It’s been a good reading week. 😀 About time I had one of those!

          • 12 animals?!?! Dangggg, that does sound like a madhouse! I’m so impressed, and lol yes, will definitely be praying for you.
Lol, those honestly sound a lot like my cats 😀

And oh nice! Short books are so nice for making ya feel productive, aren’t they?

          • It’s so crazy, but finally they’ve started finding homes, so it’s been worth it. xD In the meantime, I’ve got 10,000 little cuts all over the place from rough playing lol. It feels a bit like death by 1,000 paper cuts. xD

          • Awww, I’m glad you’re able to find them homes! <3
And yikes, that sounds uncomfortable–hopefully the scratches heal quickly!
