It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.
“First Line Fridays” is by Hoarding Books and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you. The idea to combine the two came from Nicole @ BookWyrmKnits.

Book Reveal
A ruthless young assassin’s journey for revenge comes to a stunning end in the conclusion of this acclaimed epic fantasy trilogy.
The Republic of Itreya is in chaos. Mia Corvere has assassinated Cardinal Duomo and rumors of Consul Scaeva’s death ripple through the street of Godsgrave like wildfire. But buried beneath those same streets, deep in the ancient city’s bones, lies a secret that will change the Republic forever.
Mia and her brother Jonnen must journey through the depths of the ancient metropolis. Their quest will take them through the Godsgrave underdark, across the Sea of Swords, back to the library of the Quiet Mountain and the poisoned blades of Mia’s old mentors, and at last the fabled Crown of the Moon. There, Mia will at last discover the origins of the darkin, and learn the destiny that lies in store for her and her world. But with the three suns now in descent, and Truedark on the horizon, will she survive?
Reasons to Read
✿ Who doesn’t read book three of a trilogy?!
✿ Holy cliffhanger, Batman!
✿ Did you not see the part about assassins and stabbyness?
✿ This author is fantastic. You should read everything of his.
✿ Action! Death! Bloodshed! Surprises around every corner.
✿ An honest-to-goodness reason to be afraid of the dark.
✿ Do you know how many people have waited forever to read this? Consider your good fortune.
✿ Because I said so?
Ok really? I don’t want to read Illuminae. I want to read THIS series. NOT FAIR.
READ BOTH, WOMAN. There’s no limit saying you can only read *one* Kristoff book. Obviously, you should read them all. Duh. Because Kristoff. 😛
Yeah but which one first? So now I’m just like ready to veto the choice and go with NN because of your post.
Muahaha look at you, being all rebellious. Well, like I said before, I did like Illuminae more, I think, just because I fell in love with all the characters. But if Nevernight speaks more to you, go with that. You can’t really go wrong either way. Nevernight is just more adult, and yeah, Illuminae has some more upper YA leanings, but it still feels very YA. If that helps you make your choice any. 😛
Which one is darker?
Which one has less romance?
You know these are the key questions right?
Ummm … that feels like a trick question.
Nevernight is definitely darker, in general, but it also contains some pretty graphic smut scenes, which is romance.
Illuminae has a higher death toll, but it’s more YA, so it’s a bit lighter but tackles more important dark issues and actually has the characters work through and overcome them (versus Nevernight, it’s just cool to be a horrible person) and it’s got teen romance.
Teen Romance is flowery and triggers. Sex smut is smut I can pretty much see coming and skip over? Or are they screening each other all over the place. American horror story has smut but when they are having sex with a mutilated body over them… that’s sick and hardly gonna trigger my broken heart … cause gross. Lol
This isn’t the sort of contemporary teen romance that’s all flowery and sugary sweet. This is more like … camaraderie formed during war, almost? Like these teens are warriors.
The smut is obvious when it starts, and so far, I’ve only read, like, one smut scene that was actually love. xD The others were just smut for smut because assassins lol. But also, if you skip the smut scenes, I don’t think you’ll miss anything.
That’s the kind of smut and/or romance I like… and how I can tell its forced. When I can skim/skip it.. it doesnt add anything? It didnt belong there in the first place… well except a lot of readers like it so I can skip it so everyone can get their swoon on 😽
I mean, they were part of character development. So the important thing is she had sex with these people and the impact of that. Not the actual sex part lol.
Do we like need a sex therapist for this conversation?
Can we have one move in? I feel like it’d be much easier just to have one in residence, at this point.
Well I mean we could but the boys get more action than i do and they are neutered. So i mean he is wasted on me. But for you and the book? Sure.
And you know at this point I’m gonna just kick Kristoff’s ass- unless I run into Dave Grohl- or Kristoff and think its Dave Grohl and am nice to him because I love the foo fighters… in which case Kristoff gets lucky.
Easy way to tell if you see them in person (other than the accent): Jay Kristoff is forever tall. Just saying. xD He would pretty well stand out in a crowd.
Have you met dave Grohl?
Way Kristoff is British?
I have not. xD I’m not really into Foo Fighters, either, honestly.
Kristoff is Australian! Which I both love that accent and it makes me giggle.
Well I was all kinds of wrong on that one…
Dave grohl is like 7 feet tall (ok not literally) but hes as tall as Kristoff, promise.
Google says he’s 6′. Kristoff is 6’7″. Maybe it’s just your star power glasses that make him taller. 😉
Maybe. But he is a big lanky gawky drummer. Or maybe the rest of the band is that damn short. I’m that damn short lol.
And in fairness I didnt realize he was only 3 inches shorter than cedeno chara
I can’t believe I haven’t read this yet!! I’m the worst Kristoff fan ever😕
To be fair, Darkdawn *just* came out recently-ish. So you’re excused. 😉 I’m just starting it now, but I’m so glad I waited because OMFG the way book two ends. o.0
Wow…that has me hooked 😂. Happy Friday!!
I’ve just started it, and this pretty much sets up the mood nicely. xD Definitely recommend this series, if you’re interested in it.
The quotes are actually quite funny. I hope you are enjoying your selection. My Friday Quotes
I’m definitely love it so far! Thanks. 🙂
This book / series isn’t one that I plan to read, I’m not sure why but the blurbs have never appealed to me.
However, to answer your question, I don’t always read book three of a trilogy. I never read The Amber Spyglass (His Dark Materials #3) or Allegiant (Divergent #3), and there are probably other trilogies where I have stopped after book two. 😉
Whaaat? Really? I mean, that’s fair, though. It’s a pretty freaking dark series lol. I love dark fantasy, though.
I probably should’ve worded it better, though. Like who doesn’t read book three of a trilogy they love? I’m certain I’m guilty of stopping at book two if I felt lukewarm about a trilogy and just wasn’t interested in picking up the third book. xD
OH MY GOD I NEED TO READ THIS NOOOOOOOW. Are you done already!? I feel like you just started Nevernight?!?!? This is killing me 😅🙃
OMG YOU REALLY DO! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? I actually just started Darkdawn. So I haven’t finished it yet. But OMFG. I can’t. I just … so many emotions … I don’t even know anymore.
I haven’t read anything by this author. The book looks interesting, and I like the quotes.
If you like dark fantasy, I highly recommend it!
Happy Friday! My first line is from “Sara’s Gift (Small-Town Christmas Wishes Series Book 4) by Kimberly Rose Johnson:
“I have no idea who or what should get Charity’s fifteen hundred dollars.”
Oh, very interesting first line! Sounds like a great series to read in another month for me. :3 I’ll have to look into it.
Happy Friday!
Today on my blog I’m sharing the first couple of lines from One Christmas in Winter by Bell Renshaw: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2019/10/10/first-line-friday-105/. I’m currently in the middle of chapter 8, so I’ll share a line from there.
“Hoyt hadn’t thought this through.”
Have a great weekend! 🙂❤📖
I love that line! Also something I struggle with often. xD
I need this book in my life! 🙂 Happy CDN Thanksgiving weekend!!
I’m loving it, and if you like dark fantasy, I highly recommend this series!
Happy Friday! Today I’m sharing the first lines from Code of Valor by Lynette Eason: “The broker rose from his chair and glared at the imbecile standing on the other side of the desk. ‘We paid you well to steal that boat. Where is it?'”

Oooh, interesting! I love books that open with some tension.
Happy Friday! I’m sharing from two Carrie Anne Noble books on my blog this week. Here is the second line from The Gold-Son:
“The forest was a forbidden place, spoken of only in warnings and whispers.”
So ominous! I love it!
Ohhh this only makes me want to read this series even more!
Do iiiiit! So worth a read.
I’ve already put Nevernight on my November TBR. 🙂
Yaaaay. <3 I hope you love it. It's the sort that you'll either end up loving or hating, I think, depending on your tastes in books lol.
It sounds like my cup of tea, so I’m keeping fingers crossed I’ll enjoy it.
