It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
What would you do for the ones you love?
Would you sacrifice yourself for them?
Would you claw your way back from hell?
Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
★★★★★|| Goodreads
I was warned to keep the tissues close with this one, and man, that was some great advice. Not only did this book break my heart over and over again, but it also pieced it back together just a little bit. The monster was so well done, and there’s such a really freaking powerful message in this, though it’s not just drilled into the reader’s head blatantly over and over again like an after-school special. It’s a subtle, yet obvious, message. Also a plus: it’s a really quick read, straight to the point, but not at all boring or dragging in any place.
Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff
★★★★★|| Goodreads
I’d seen a couple people mentioning that they didn’t like Godsgrave as much as Nevernight, so I went in with a little trepidation and fully expecting the Second Book Curse to rear its ugly head. Totally not a problem here, though. The tone of this book is definitely different than the first. Nevernight is about essentially a trial and betrayal and meeting all these new characters. Godsgrave is basically gladiators and found family. Mia was still the same Mia, though, and she grew and evolved in different ways. I loved a lot of the new characters that were added, but what most got me about this book was the action. Nevernight was great, but Godsgrave really seems to rev up the action. There’s really not a whole ton of breathing room, which could be a turn-off for some, but I loved the fast pace and the movement from one thing to the next.
Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff
★★★★★|| Goodreads
I just finished this in time to write this post, so I have all the feels and no idea what the heck I’m supposed to do with them. I just don’t know anything anymore. I’m so lost, after spending two weeks with Mia et al. This book seemed to take the action and gore and violence from the second and turned it up another notch … and I wasn’t aware that was possible? Just when I thought Mia couldn’t possibly get more badass or awesome than she already was … Kristoff says, “Hold my beer,” (but in that lovely Australian accent) and drops Darkdawn. There was aaaaall the action and death in this and twists and turns and surprises and I just … read it, okay? Just read it. I don’t smoke, but I feel like I need a come-down smoke, all right?
A Lush and Seething Hell by John Hornor Jacobs
Status: 5%
A brilliant mix of the psychological and supernatural, blending the acute insight of Roberto Bolaño and the eerie imagination of H. P. Lovecraft, The Sea Dreams It Is the Sky examines life in a South American dictatorship. Centered on the journal of a poet-in-exile and his failed attempts at translating a maddening text, it is told by a young woman trying to come to grips with a country that nearly devoured itself.
In My Heart Struck Sorrow, a librarian discovers a recording from the Deep South—which may be the musical stylings of the Devil himself.
Breathtaking and haunting, A Lush and Seething Hell is a terrifying and exhilarating journey into the darkness, an odyssey into the deepest reaches of ourselves that compels us to confront secrets best left hidden.
I just started this one yesterday, because I don’t carry physical books while I’m out, and this was my next planned Kindle read. I actually don’t really have much of an impression of this yet? There’s really no easing in here. You’re just suddenly thrown into the life of some random person. There also wasn’t really a hook to me. I actually sort of have no idea what the heck is going on, and it’s not yet creepy, sooo … sorry, but I don’t really have much to say. It’s gotten good reviews, so I assume it’s going to pick up. Or I hope so, at least.
I’m actually picking up In the Hall With the Knife today, and I’m so excited! It looks like it’ll be a quick read, and I’ve been so eager to start it. I’ve already moved my handy-dandy magnetic bookmark to the book, so that’s how you know it’s serious.
The lovely Leelynn @ Sometimes Leelynn Reads sent me Before I Disappear, because she’s fabulous? Also, she enjoyed it and I’m so looking forward to it, too! It sounds all spooky and great and yeeees.
I actually need to get The Turn of the Key back to the library, so I should probably take the time to squeeze that in here, yeah? I’ve heard so many good things about this book and its creepy vibe, and I’m looking forward to picking it up.
Looks like you’re surrounded by great books. I hope you have an awesome reading week. Here’s my post: https://stormereadss.wordpress.com/2019/10/16/www-wednesday-october-16-2019/
Thanks! I sure did last week. I don’t think I’ve had a 5-star week before, so let’s see if we can keep the record this week. xD
I just started reading The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle yesterday, and I feel like it also throws you into the middle of some random person’s life. The only difference, is that the narrator is thrown into it just as randomly as you are (or so it seems so far).I’m enjoying it, but I know what you mean about not knowing what to say yet. I feel like I have to reserve judgement until I kinda understand what is going on.
I soooo want to read that! I had my hold for it come through when I was already swamped with books and had to throw it back and get back on the wait list. T_T So many regrets.
And you know, not all books open with a whizbang, and that’s okay. Some are a slow burn intro, but a big payoff at the end, and I’m totally in it for the long haul. It’s just harder to really drum up something to say about them is all lol.
This is a library book for me, too, so we’ll see if I can finish it before it’s due (or if I can renew it by then). It’s certainly interesting enough so far! But it’s not a short book either, so we’ll see.
True, some of my favorite books have a slow burn intro. I’m just not used to having to talk about them before I get invested in them.
I just finished an 800-page book, woman. Everything in comparison feels short now. xD That book took me foreverrrr lol.
LOL, good point! XD
Fine now it is two books in one post. AND I saw one of them in the last two posts I commented on. That makes four straight posts I saw his books and now two of them in just ONE post.
As for what’s coming next I can’t wait to see you review them.
Illuminae my ass.
Me neither. I’m only, like, three reviews behind right now. Work is kicking my butt, but I’m finally getting *some* semblance of a balance down, so I’m hoping to start getting the reviews out sooner LOL. I’m bad at this.
Also, you should just read all his books. Illuminae was on everyone’s posts earlier this year. You just conveniently missed it. But Darkdawn was *just* released so of course everyone’s reading it now and you’re hearing more about it. 😛
Go ahead and push it and I’ll dig my heels in and not read anything just to die on the hill of never having read anything Kristoff ever wrote ever and then haunt all of you 😈
That’s a bit cutting off your nose to spite your face. I mean, I’m okay with adding one more ghostie to my house. But I think you’d be happier if you just caved and took a month of Kristoff and read all his work. 😛
Enjoy your reading!
I’m about to pick up There will come a darkness, and I’m listening to American royals!
Oooh, I’ve wanted to read There Will Come A Darkness. I’ll be interested to see how you like it. 🙂
I thought you lived in my head
Sorry Evelyn dear, but I’m a little confused about how she missed TWCAD impaling itself on my soul
There are a lot of things in your head. No offense, but it’s a bit cluttered here. Hard to find my way about. Just because you *have* the space, doesn’t mean you need to use *all* the space.
Also, I feel like I miss everything lately. xD
Fair enough.
And as I’ve said at least a million times ateast you have that thing called a family and a life to blame for missing things
Uhhh … I’m not so much sure about the life part. xD But sure, let’s blame it on my family. I usually blame them for everything anyway lol.
Isnt that the whole point of having one. I think that’s why I call them the boys… and just wait till mom and I are in the same room for a couple weeks. She gets picked on more on twitter so much she should trend.
I guess that’s true. xD
A Monster Calls has caught my eye a few times before. Since you’ve enjoyed it so I feel more of a drive to finally check it out. I do hope A Lush and Seething Hell picks up for you too. I really want that book to be good.
Have a great week!
http://musewithmeblog.com/2019/10/16/www-wednesday-october-16-2019/
It’s a super quick read, so a good way to get a quick win if you’re feeling like other reads are taking forever, too. xD
I’m really wanting it to be good, too, and I’m reading other reviews that seem to rate it so highly, but … I’m still just not feeling this first story.
A Monster Calls made the same impression on me, and I definitely can’t wait to reread it soon! The movie does an excellent job adapting the story as well. And I can’t wait to start Nevernight and The Turn Of The Key next month. Have a wonderful week and happy reading!
Whoa, there’s a movie?! Didn’t even know that. Heck, now I’m going to have to look that up one weekend when I don’t mind a good cry.
I think I watched it on Netflix last year? It’s without doubt worth watching although it’s best to keep your tissues close… I almost never cry when reading or watching movies, but this one made me cry on both accounts.
