First Line Friday 56 || A New Take on An Old Classic

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

“First Line Fridays” is by Hoarding Books and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you. The idea to combine the two came from Nicole @ BookWyrmKnits.

First Lines

The office of the headmaster of Blackbrook Academy looked like a high-budget, if not particularly imaginative, movie set.

Those two were a real piece of work. If someone told him that they knew where all the bodies were hidden, Vaughn would believe it in a heartbeat. Sucking up to all the teachers’ faces, then rolling their eyes and ridiculing the adults behind their backs. Two-faced jerks. He hated people who pretended to be who they weren’t.

A murderer could be around every corner in this thrilling YA trilogy based on the board game CLUE!

When a storm strikes at Blackbrook Academy, an elite prep school nestled in the woods of Maine, a motley crew of students—including Beth “Peacock” Picach, Orchid McKee, Vaughn Green, Sam “Mustard” Maestor, Finn Plum, and Scarlet Mistry—are left stranded on campus with their headmaster. Hours later, his body is found in the conservatory and it’s very clear his death was no accident. With this group of students who are all hiding something, nothing is as it seems, and everyone has a motive for murder. Fans of the CLUE board game and cult classic film will delight in Diana Peterfreund’s modern reimagining of the brand, its characters, and the dark, magnificent old mansion with secrets hidden within its walls.

Reasons to Read

✿ See old favorite characters reimagined in a fresh, new way.
✿ Book one of a YA trilogy (but then again, aren’t they all?!).
✿ Highly relatable and recognizable characters.

    • I THOUGHT OF YOU WHEN I POSTED THIS. And thought, she’d better get this one or I’ll hit her with it. xD

I do! I think it took a little too long to get to the murder, but I’m about a third done with it. I think the reimaginings of the characters are really interesting, and I can see the original characters in them, which is exciting!

    • I haven’t, either! I was super excited to learn about this one. AND it’s going to be a trilogy, which is even more exciting.

    • Ha, I hide it! Because the reveal seems fun to me. I don’t actually know if it’s fun for any readers, but … I’m easily entertained, so I like imaging you poor souls trying to guess the book. ‾\_(ツ)_/‾ Definitely a fun read, though!

    • Lucky for you, these aren’t pass/fail. 😉 To be fair, I usually haven’t heard about most of the books people share in these, either, which is a fact that I love and my TBR hates. xD

  1. Paula Shreckhise

My first lines are from Hope’s Highest Mountain by Misty Beller:
    My Darling Rachel,
You were everything to me. You still are. Don’t ever forget that.

  2. lelandandbecky

Happy Friday! My first line is from Wyatt: The Montana Marshalls” by Susan May Warren:

“Usually Wyatt, goalie for the Minnesota Blue Ox NHL team, could shrug off his mistakes.”

56%: “You’re still looking for something, trying to grab something that just keeps flying by you.”

  3. Happy Saturday!

Yesterday on my blog I shared the first line from The Painted Castle by Kristy Cambron: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2019/10/17/first-line-friday-106/. I’m currently reading Always Look Twice by Elizabeth Goddard, so I’ll share a line from that book.

“For some reason he would never understand, Heath always ended up assisting someone in the direst of circumstances.”

    Hope you’re having a good weekend! 🙂❤📖
