First Line Friday 56 || Gloriously Geeky and Bookish

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

“First Line Fridays” is by Hoarding Books and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you. The idea to combine the two came from Nicole @ BookWyrmKnits.

First Lines

Books ran when they grew restless, when they grew unruly, or when they grew real. Regardless of the reason, when books ran, it was a librarian’s duty to catch them.

Something of the acidic feeling withered in Leto’s throat, turning to ash that left an awful feeling in his mouth. He heard the whispers from the raven road again. We never talk anymore.

The Library of the Unwritten

In the first book in a brilliant new fantasy series, books that aren’t finished by their authors reside in the Library of the Unwritten in Hell, and it is up to the Librarian to track down any restless characters who emerge from those unfinished stories.

Many years ago, Claire was named Head Librarian of the Unwritten Wing—a neutral space in Hell where all the stories unfinished by their authors reside. Her job consists mainly of repairing and organizing books, but also of keeping an eye on restless stories that risk materializing as characters and escaping the library. When a Hero escapes from his book and goes in search of his author, Claire must track and capture him with the help of former muse and current assistant Brevity and nervous demon courier Leto.

But what should have been a simple retrieval goes horrifyingly wrong when the terrifyingly angelic Ramiel attacks them, convinced that they hold the Devil’s Bible. The text of the Devil’s Bible is a powerful weapon in the power struggle between Heaven and Hell, so it falls to the librarians to find a book with the power to reshape the boundaries between Heaven, Hell … and Earth.

Reasons to Read

✿ Did you not see the gloriously geeky and bookish in the title?!
✿ A book about librarians for … well, everyone. But also librarians.
✿ Librarians actually get to be the heroes.
✿ Includes Heaven, Hell, and probably an unholy battle between the two.
✿ Except over books, which is the only appropriate thing to go to war over.
✿ Spoiler alert: the Devil did it. Probably.

    • I don’t knowwwww. I haven’t actually really started it yet lol. I’m starting it today. xD But I read the opening and I think I will.

  1. Cool first line!

    Happy Friday!

Today on my blog, I’m sharing the first line from Always Look Twice by Elizabeth Goddard: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2019/10/24/first-line-friday-107/. I’m currently on chapter 64, so I’ll share a line from there.

“Harper and Heath stood in the lavish foyer of Trinity History Theater and Museum with hundreds of others.”

Hope you have a great weekend filled with awesome reading time. 🙂❤📖

    • They do, apparently! Unwritten books, which is even more terrifying. They come to life and take the form of a character in them. It’s a really neat idea!

  2. That’s certainly an interesting first line. On my blog, I’m featuring The Elusive Miss Ellison by Carolyn Miller. Here, I will share the first line in Chapter Nine of my current read, It All Started at the Masquerade by Janice Cole Hopkins. Melanie awoke to find Gemona sitting beside her bed watching her.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

Happy Friday! My first line is from “The Wedding Dress Christmas” by Rachel Hauck:

“In the glow of the town’s newly strung Christmas lights, all her fears seemed to fade.”

    • I’m glad you did! You’re just a really good guesser. 😉 I really enjoyed it, as much as I thought I would. And it’s apparently a series? Which I am all for, though I’m not sure how they’re going to follow that up.
