Wonderfully Bookish Pumpkin Carvings

Posted October 29, 2019 by Sammie in chat with me, top ten tuesdays / 56 Comments

Halloween is just a couple days away, and I’ve never much been into the costumes or the candy, but what I really love is all the creativity people show when carving pumpkins!

It’s mostly 80% awe, 5% wondering how they did it, 5% considering how horribly I’d mess up if I even attempted it, and 10% bitterness at the fact that I don’t have an artistic bone in my body. But boy are they pretty to look at.

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is a Halloween freebie, and we just carved our pumpkins this weekend, so I thought it’d be nice to see what bookish ideas others have done.

Books I’d love to see a pumpkin carved for:

Gideon the Ninth (with Gideon looking all fierce with her sword in hand)
Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow (with Morrigan, Fenestra, and Jack
Nevernight (with Mister Kindly and Eclipse)
Scythe (anything with the scythes would be cool)
Illuminae (anything. Seriously. I’m not picky. Someone do this.)
Good Omens (with Aziraphale and Crowley with their wings out with Adam)
The Cruel Prince/Wicked King (Cardan. Whatever, just as long as Cardan’s there.)

What book would you love to see a pumpkin carved for?

    • Me too! I just want to be able to carve ONE pumpkin without the face ending up so uneven that it looks like it’s melting. 😛 And they’re out here killing it haha.

    • RIGHT?! I think my favorite, though, is the FMA one, just because I’m such a big FMA geek. xD But Jurassic Park was a close second.

  1. These are cool! I’ve always been in awe of people who have the talent to do this kind of art. I just love the Cthulu pumpkin🎃

    • It’s such a niche talent, but I just love it so much, especially with the way you can play with the light and dark and shadows. <3 Also, Cthulu is always a winner in my book. ;)

    • Right?! I don’t remember if the Cthulhu one said or not. But I know, like, the ones that were all around took, like, 33 hours or something crazy like that, I think? There were a lot of awesome HP pumpkins! But I figured a lot of people share those, so I wanted to share ones that were less known. :3

  2. ohhhh these are so so nice. pumpkin carving is such a cool art. I absolutely SUCK at it so it’s always so fun to see what other people do with it lool i love this post.

  3. Wow, those are awesome! The ones toward the end are probably the coolest ones, but I appreciate how appropriate it is to have the Balgrog lit by a Jack-o-Lantern’s candle. I personally want to see the ones with dragons. ALL the ones with dragons. 😉

    • Yeeees. MOAR DRAGONS! Maybe next year, my post will be dedicated just to dragons. xD I really liked that with the Balrog, too! And later on, if you watch closely, you can see Colonel Mustang’s snap lit from the candle, too, where he creates fire. It’s a really neat use of the light.

      • I always forget to look up dragon pumpkins until after Halloween, and then it seems somewhat pointless. Maybe I’ll make myself a note for next year.

I hadn’t noticed that originally about Mustang’s fire, but now that you mention it, it seems so obvious. Neat effect!

        • I just … can’t carve. Not even with a pattern. I might try a dragon next year. This year, I was working when hubby and the kid carved pumpkins, so none for me (and really, it was just as well lol).

    • Really? I didn’t think they were all that scary, although maybe Cthulhu is. xD Five-year-old me would’ve been terrified of the Jurassic Park one, too.

  4. Whoever carved those pumpkins has a lot of talent and even more time on their hands! 🙂

Hint for carving really nice pumpkins: Use a template. These days you can even get a Dremel that helps with your carving. I use the templates from zombiepumpkins(dot)com 🙂

    • Oh, for sure. Some of the more intricate ones took, I think they said, something like 33 hours? I can’t imagine doing anything for that long. xD

Oh my gosh, thanks for the tip! That site looks great, and I’ve bookmarked it for next year. Wouldn’t have thought to use a Dremel for that, either, but that’s so neat!

  5. Holy crap, how are people so damned talented?! I think these people would have more talent in their pinky than I do in my whole being (not even kidding) 😱 These are all seriously amazing! Love your take on this week’s freebie, Sammie 🙂

    • RIGHT?! They should stop being so greedy and hoarding the talent and share it with us poor peons who can’t even draw a straight line to save their lives. D:

    • I don’t know. Magic? I’m going with magic. Someone should make that happen! Is anyone taking requests for pumpkins? xD Especially with the third book coming out in under a week (!!!!), it’d be a good series to make a pumpkin for.

  6. Love what you did for this week’s Halloween freebie! All of these pumpkins are gorgeous and I’d love to actually be able to do something on a pumpkin as all of these!

    • Thanks! Me, too. I imagine it takes a LOT of practice, though, and I just … that seems like a lot of effort lol. And I’m not all that artistic.

  7. Love these!! You picked so many great options. I’m always in awe of all things artistic but especially pumpkin carving–it is SO difficult so I’m just blown away when people create such detailed carvings.

    • Thanks! I tried to find some rarer ones that aren’t shared as readily. I don’t understand how they manage to do something so intricate and not ruin it. I mean, I try to cut out a traced shape and somehow, one side of it collapses just out of spite. xD I don’t know how they do it lol.

    • One of them had said it took something like 33 hours. I can’t remember which. I *think* it was one of the 360 pumpkins (either FMA or Jurassic Park). One of the simpler ones said eight hours (though I can’t remember which now, of course, because my brain is mush lol). In short: a loooong freaking time and a lot of dedication.

    • Yay, I’m glad! I know there are a lot of Raven Boys fans out there, and I’ve seen pumpkins for a lot of the big series before (Hunger Games, LotR, Harry Potter, etc), but I hadn’t seen a Raven Boys one yet, so I thought that was really neat!

    • I loved those, too! Especially the Jurassic Park one, because that’ll always hold a special place in my heart. xD These artists amaze me.

    • Lots of talent and waaaaay more patience than I’ll ever have, I assume. xD I really want someone to make that one happen! Maybe next year I’ll find one, fingers crossed.
