My Autumn Possibility Pile

Posted November 5, 2019 by Sammie in #amreading, chat with me, TBR, top ten tuesdays / 29 Comments

It is hereby dubbed a Possibility Pile because, one, it’s super fun to say, and two, TBR sounds so … rigid.

And let’s be honest, I’m absolute crap at sticking to TBRs, and there’s so much less pressure in a possibility pile. Instead of a regimented group of books I will read, I have a stack of books to choose from if the mood strikes me. Yes, this sounds much more my speed. As always, credit goes to Dini @ DiniPandaReads for the term.

I’d love to say that these books are perfect fall reads, but … probably they’re not. They’re just books I need to read right about now.

Maybe one or two of them could be good fall reads? But I’ve never really been into the fall aesthetic at all.

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is books that give off autumn vibes. Which, first, autumn is just a fancy way to say fall. Don’t get all sophisticated on me now. Remember whose blog you’re at. And second … I have none.

I’m more of a mood reader than a seasonal reader, with the exception of scary reads at Halloween and a handful of cozy reads at Christmas. I tried for this post, I really did. I thought about all the things I associated with fall and got … bupkis. So here’s all the really random books I’m hoping to read soon instead.

How to Become a Federal Criminal: An Illustrated Handbook for the Aspiring Offender

How to Become a Federal Criminal

I sat and stared at this all day yesterday during work thinking … well, that’s an interesting title. I mean, it seems like a pretty easy thing to do, but if you plan on doing something, you might as well do it right. A few tricks of the trade surely wouldn’t hurt. xD I’ve always been a fan of bizarre laws, so I’ve decided to give it a go. But … also, I plead the Fifth. Just in case. You all saw nothing. I have an alibi!

Dragon Divider

The Toll

The Toll

This is supposed to arrive today, and I will be starting it the minute it arrives. I’ve set aside everything else just for this. I’m ready for it. This book, at least, is for sure happening. I’m even planning on live tweeting my reactions, so … you know, that’s something to look forward to. XD

Dragon Divider

Salvage the Bones

Salvage the Bones

I’ve heard such good things about Sing, Unburied, Sing and I really wanted to read it, but I thought I should read Jesmyn Ward’s first book … well, first. I’ve actually only got a week to read this before it’s due back at the library, so this will be happening soon, too, . Look at me, checking books off my possibility pile already.

Dragon Divider

Six of Crows || Crooked Kingdom

Six of Crows     Crooked Kingdom

I received these for my birthday, and I just can’t wait to start them! Right after finishing Toll, I intend to pick this duology up. I sort of can’t believe it’s taken me this long? I feel so far behind on the big, popular reads, but I’m getting there, little by little.

Dragon Divider

War Girls

War Girls

Futuristic Nigeria? Yes, please. I also just happened to get a copy of Beasts of Night by the same author, and I couldn’t decide which to read first, but considering this one’s a late ARC, I should probably get on that, huh? Plus, do you see how gorgeous that cover is?!

Dragon Divider

The Bone Ships

The Bone Ships

I am so late on this ARC … and I don’t even know why? I’m so freaking excited to read this book. I think my expectations are so high that I’m worried of it not living up to them, which is silly, because obviously it’s going to be fine. I need to get over it and just read this dang book already because dragons and bones. Two of my favorite things.

Novice Dragoneer

Novice Dragoneer

Dragons are obviously a fall thing, right? I want aaaall the dragon reads! I mean, you had to know I was going to need to check this one out. And that cover is so gorgeous, how could I resist? I’m only human. Allegedly.

Dragon Divider

Fate of the Fallen

Fate of the Fallen

So … I’m a fan of characters potentially losing their minds. Wait … yeah, no, that’s what I meant. I’m also a fan of reluctant heroes, and the Mathias/Aaslo combination seems like it’s going to be a good one!

Dragon Divider

Shadow City

Shadow City

Hellooo apocalypse. I feel like it’s only fitting that while the world outside my window is dying, I read about … well, the world dying. It totally fits! This has some really dark, mysterious overtones with it, and I’m all about that.

Dragon Divider

The Family Upstairs

The Family Upstairs

I’ve said before, I’ll say it again: I want more haunted building books. All sorts of buildings. Any building. The more ghosties, the better. I’ve heard really good things about Lisa Jewell, but I don’t think I’ve read any of her books yet, so I’m excited for a chance to read this author for the first time.

What are some books you’re hoping to get to this fall? Any recommendations I should add to my list?

  1. Happy book birthday to The Toll!!! My preorder has been on its way to me from last week but I know I’m still gonna have to wait ages for it to arrive. Super sad times. Hella tempted to buy the ebook so I can read it NOW! Haha

This is a great possibility pile, Sammie! Quite a few I wanna read but some I never heard of but sound interesting. Like that first book lmao 😂 Are you trying to tell us something? Haha jokes jokes… or is it? Lol

    • Awww I hope it doesn’t take *too* long to get to you! I, um, might have finished it already. And can confirm that it was worth the read. Maybe not as fast as I did it, because wow, too many emotions all at the same time.

Pffft, of course not. Because I would never be silly enough to get caught, and that book is only for silly people who are dumb enough to leave a trail of their crimes. 😉 Erm, I mean … I’m innocent?

  2. lydiaschoch

Good luck with deciding what to read next! And I totally agree that Autumn Possibility Pile sounds loads better than TBR. 🙂

  3. Awesome list, Sammi😁 I’m reading Fate of the Fallen right now and enjoying it. And you’ve reminded me I’m also late reading The Bone Ships!!

    • I’m so glad I’m not the only one! I feel like such a bad blogger since I’ve been late with all my reviews lately. Hopefully, the quality of the review makes up for it, but who knows? xD

  4. Love this “possibility pile”! Hope you read Six of Crows soon, I really loved it. I’ve been waiting forever for Crooked Kingdom to arrive though but I’ll definitely read it this month, or should I say that it’s on my possibility pile? 😉 I haven’t read Scythe yet but all I hear is amazing things about this series. Great list!

    • Yes! It’s totally in your possibility pile. 😉

I’ve been meaning to read them forever, but my library never seems to have them in, and the hold on Overdrive is about three years long lol. We should be reading it around the same time, though! I hope it lives up to its reputation. 😀

Scythe was definitely a good series! A little different than what one might expect from traditional dystopia. Much more of a Giver feel (fallen utopia), but I loved it.

  5. I know you and I both struggle with sticking to a list so I love that you have just a big pile of books. I have the same for NonFiction November! I also received the Toll yesterday and I was sitting here all smug with myself that I didn’t crack into immediately when I realized I hadn’t picked it up from the Amazon drop box. Is that self-control? Prolly not.

I definitely need to add “How to become a Federal Criminal” to my TBR. That looks amazing.

    • It takes so much pressure off, thinking that I can select books from this pile, but I don’t have to read *all* the books from this pile. xD I’m sure it’s just a weird psychosomatic thing, but since I started doing that, I seem to do better with reading lol.

I don’t know that I could do a whole month of nonfiction, though lol. You’re so brave. I need to offset my nonfiction reads or I get overwhelmed with too much knowledge. xD My brain has a teensy storage space.

I’m definitely going to go ahead and say that’s the ultimate self control and I’m very impressed. Because I read the whole thing already. xD Is there such a thing as negative self-control? I’m pretty sure I have that.

    • I’ll let you know how it is. 😉 Erm … hopefully. That’s an ARC, so I should, you know, probably get to it this autumn. xD Like a good blogger.

        • I’m planning on really toning it down next year lol. Even now, I’ve been so much pickier about the ones I requested. But I request months out, and in September, I had, like, 8 all approved at the same time, after sitting there for, like, 3- 5 months. So I had assumed they were denials and hadn’t counted on those. xD My bad.

  6. So … I’m a fan of characters potentially losing their minds.

LMAOO idk why this is making me laugh but it is. BECAUSE SAME.

and yes i agree more haunted buildings the better. i love this list completely. i feel that you get me.

    • I mean, we all have a tenuous, at best, grip on reality, right? So of course we’d love characters that are also toeing that line. 😛 That’s what I’m going with, at least.

  7. I really can’t even think past The Toll tbh! I am SO EXCITED! I ended up not being able to start it last night so I want to go RIGHT NOW. War Girls looks awesome too, I need to get to that one ASAP! Also hadn’t heard of Shadow City but now I need it so thanks for that!! Hope you get to all of these soon, and that you enjoy them!

    • Ahhhh you need to start it! It’s worth every minute and then some. I can’t wait to hear what you think of it!

Just casually adding to your TBR, like I do. I feel like turnabout is fair play. 😉

    • That’s a good idea! I was surprised by how well I remembered them, but it never hurts to refresh your memory before starting a third book. I hope you enjoy it when you get to it!

  8. Oh gosh, great picks! I hope you enjoy these as you get to them–but especially the Six of Crows duology. I was just thinking about those two books the other day because I read them in the autumn (I’m so sophisticated, I just took a drink from my water bottle with my pinky finger extended to emphasize the utter sophistication I possess even though I DEFINITELY just spilled some water on myself) and I always kind of tie it to the autumn.

    • Ahahaha, now that’s my kind of sophistication (water spill and all). I’ve seen a lot of people tie it to autumn, which is pretty interesting. I’m still not finished with the first book, but I’m definitely enjoying it. Can’t get enough Kaz. <3
