Me, deciding whether to join: I mean, it’s not like I actually read nonfiction that often, so where will I even get book ideas from?
Me, later, scouring my shelves: Where did all this nonfiction come from?!
Must’ve been the aliens, those sneaky little buggers. To be fair, I actually didn’t know that philosophy and religion is often classified as nonfiction? I had to stop and think about it. I have books like that! Most of the rest are biographies, because I usually find those at local bookstores and scoop them up.
So … good news … I’m totally susceptible to peer pressure! It’s super effective!
Wait, no, that’s not where I was going with that. What I meant was, I’ll be participating in Nonfiction November. Okay, fine, it’s really two ways of saying the same thing. But the latter sounds nicer.
What we have here is the elusive possibility pile, seen in its natural habitat. It’s wild. It’s spirited. It may even bite if you get too close, but don’t worry, it doesn’t have rabies. Probably. You do have your shots, don’t you?
I will not read all these books this month.
That’s actually the beauty of a possibility pile. It’s full of … possibility! So which titles will I pick? It’s mysteryyyy. So without further ado … let’s see the selection!
Change is the Only Constant
This is a teensy bit cheating, because I’ve already started this one before even making this post. But I started it the day I learned it was Nonfiction November, so I’m going to count it (especially since I’m still reading it).
F*ck Your Diet: And Other Things My Thighs Tell Me
This is an ARC I was lucky enough to get, and oh how this book title spoke to me. It sounds so much like me that I just had to read it.
The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs
This one is going to be a big it depends. I’ve put a hold on it, and we’ll see if it comes through in time for me to actually read it this month. I’m not going to hold my breath on this one, though.
The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread
As a passionate linguaphile, reader, and Englisher … I love cliches and the history behind them and etymologies of words and such. So I was really excited to find this book in my library, because I’m extremely nerdy in that way.
Astrophysics for Young People in a Hurry
This just showed up at my library, and I snapped it up. I’ve been meaning to read a Neil deGrasse Tyson book for pretty much going on forever now, and it seemed like this was a good a time as any to actually get on that.
How to Become a Federal Criminal
Like we really need help, right? For all of those for whom common crime just isn’t an option, because it doesn’t have enough flare, there comes this book! With a whole slew of unique ways to break some pretty dang odd laws. I’ve always loved odd law books, and I think I’m going to love the humor in this.
Things My Son Needs to Know about the World
I’m absolutely in love with Backman’s fiction books, so of course I jumped at the chance to read his nonfiction. I’m hoping for something along the lines of Robert Fulghum’s fun and quirky anecdote style that simultaneously makes you laugh and want to cry. Am I asking for a lot? Probably. But I know Backman is capable of delivering.
Beyond Religion
I had to get at least one philosophy book in here, since that’s my first love. I’ve enjoyed reading previous books by the Dalai Lama, so I’m hoping this one will follow.
Eating the Sun: Small Musings on a Vast Universe
I’ve had math. I’ve had macro science. How about a bit more micro-level science? No, not that micro, but something closer to Earth, perhaps. I found this at a book sale locally and was curious to know more, so this seems like a good time to maybe pick it up.
The Night Trilogy
I read Night back in high school, but I actually never realized it was a trilogy until more recently, so I’ve been wanting to go back and rectify that oversight by actually, you know, reading the whole dang thing.
Even the Stars Look Lonesome
I love me some Maya Angelou, and I’ve had this for going on forever and haven’t read it yet, but I’m pretty sure it’s time.
My Song for Him Who Never Sang to Me
I actually found Epitaph floating around Twitter, and the poem hit me so hard in the feels that I immediately went and bought this book. I knew I had to own it. I wanted to have at least one poetry book on this list, so since I just got this, it’ll be it! I can’t wait to dig in and see what other poems are in this collection.
The Awkward Thoughts of W. Kamau Bell
Confession: I had no idea who the heck W. Kamau Bell was until I stumbled across this book at a local book sale. I watched some of his interviews on YouTube, though, and thought he seemed pretty interesting and I like his style, so I’m looking forward to giving this one a try.
Yes Please
I’ve seen some conflicting reviews about this book, and Amy Poehler can be hit or miss for me, but since someone I know recommended it, I figured I’d check it out just the same.
I just don’t have time for non fiction, although if forced to read one, I’d probably pick something sciencey by Mary Roach. I think of all your choices, I’d read the Fredrik Backman book😁
Sciency is always a good option! Also, how can you go wrong with Backman? That’s really why that’s on this list, because I’m guaranteed to at least enjoy one of these haha.
I’m not joining the Nonfiction November reading challenge, but these books look fun! I am particularly curious about the dinosaur book. It’s been on my TBR for a while, but I haven’t taken the time to look for the book yet.
I’ve seen a couple people read it, and they seemed to think it was interesting (some parts of it better than others), so I wanted to give it a try! Here’s to hoping it’s as good as it sounds. xD
Haha I hope I was part of the peer pressure! lolol. I had the same thing happen to me though, thought I didn’t own that much and then…damn, I owned a lot of it. There are so many good books on your list! I love Night and Yes, Please, and I love that there’s a book out there to teach me how to become a Federal criminal hahaha. Thanks so much for that knowledge!
Yes, of course. xD And very proud of it, I see. 😛 Ha, no problem. I mean, if you’re going to do something, might as well read a book on it to make sure you do it right, yeah? 😉
I hope you do get to read The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs, because I absolutely adored that book.
I’m really looking forward to it! But holds always seem so slow to come in to me. But I’ll definitely get to it eventually.
