It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.
Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

Welcome to the cursed town of Sparrow…
Where, two centuries ago, three sisters were sentenced to death for witchery. Stones were tied to their ankles and they were drowned in the deep waters surrounding the town.
Now, for a brief time each summer, the sisters return, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them under.
Like many locals, seventeen-year-old Penny Talbot has accepted the fate of the town. But this year, on the eve of the sisters’ return, a boy named Bo Carter arrives; unaware of the danger he has just stumbled into.
Mistrust and lies spread quickly through the salty, rain-soaked streets. The townspeople turn against one another. Penny and Bo suspect each other of hiding secrets. And death comes swiftly to those who cannot resist the call of the sisters.
But only Penny sees what others cannot. And she will be forced to choose: save Bo, or save herself.

I was so surprised to click on the cover and discover that these snippets come from The Wicked Deep! I have this one on my TBR and it sounds amazing. I look forward to finding out if he stays and why she needs him so badly. Thanks for sharing these! 🙂
I hope you love it when you get a chance to read it! This one’s been on my TBR forever, and my hold finally came through, so I figured I should squeeze it in before I lose it again. xD
I love that first line, I would pick up the book just based on that 😁
There’s something about apparent death and destruction that somehow makes a story immediately interesting. xD
This sounds deadly!! 😀 Happy American Thanksgiving weekend!
I have heard a lot of good things about this one. Enjoy your current read!
Thanks! So far, it’s been pretty good, but I’m still at the beginning. 🙂
This sounds like a great creepy read! I’m curious to see how scary it ends up being, and if it’s something that I’ll actually enjoy.
We’ll see! I’m just getting started, and so far, it’s not really all that creepy. It’s a bit teen drama-y, which is meh to me. But it’s starting to hint at stuff, so I’m excited to see when things really get kicked off. :3 I should be done in time for a mini review on Wednesday. 😉
Huh, teen drama is the reason I’ve avoided so much YA. So… I think I’ll wait for your mini-review. 😉
I think I’d recommend passing on this one. The teen drama is a bit strong with it, and the whole premise is based on an insta-love romance that just didn’t do it for me. I’m sure some people would like it, but I don’t know that this would be for you. xD I’m not sure it was for me, either lol.
Thanks for the rec. Teen angst just really gets to me these days. And LOL, I know what you mean about not being sure the book was for you.
It wasn’t even angst. It was just … insta-love that felt very teeny, if that makes sense? Plus, lots of partying and drinking and teens being teens, I guess? Which is so not even close to my teen experience, and I hate to be *that* old lady, but WHERE ARE YOUR PARENTS?!
Huh, I get that. And it wasn’t close to my teen experience either, but now that I’m an adult I’ve met people who did have that experience as a teen. I still want to know where their parents were, but at least it’s a little less unbelievable for me.
Oh, I absolutely know people who had that experience as teens. But I mean, even as absent as their parents were, if it were a matter of, hey, I know a bunch of boys die at this time of year, someone would take notice of where they are. xD
Yeah, good point. That would be hard to make more realistic and still keep the plot point, though.
I love the cover on this one! And I love the 56% snippet!!
It’s definitely been an interesting beginning! I’m looking forward to hitting that 56% snippet, too. I’ve just met both characters, but that’s all I know of it so far. xD
Sounds like a fun read. I like the way you reveal the book at the end.
Thanks! I love doing the reveal, because it gives people time to focus on the words before seeing what the book is. 😉 Or that’s what I imagine happens in my head, and I’m perfectly okay living in my own little fantasy world, if that’s not the case. xD
I remember reading this one and enjoying it! I might want to give this one a re-read now 🙂
I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed it! I’m just getting started, so I’m looking forward to really getting into it. It’s always a good time for a re-read. 😉
Happy Saturday! Today, I’m currently reading On My Honour by Elizabeth John’s, so I’ll share from there.
“Meg looked down at her hands, which were raw from lye soap. How did people do this every day?”
Hope you’re having a good weekend filled with awesome reading time and rest. 😊❤📖
Sounds like an interesting read! Hope you’re enjoying it.
I didn’t realize that this book is set in Oregon. I’m from Oregon so will look for it. My Friday quotes
It is! I grew up in NY, and I’m still always excited when I find books set there (particularly outside of the city, since I’m not from the city haha). I think it changes your reading experience when a book is set somewhere you’re so intimately familiar with.
This sounds great. I can’t wait to read it.
It’s definitely caught my attention so far!
