First Line 56 || Here Be Witches

Posted January 31, 2020 by Sammie in #amreading, Book Beginnings, First Line Friday, Friday 56 / 30 Comments

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

First Lines

This is a story about magic and where it goes and perhaps more importantly where it comes from and why, although it doesn’t pretend to answer all or any of these questions.

“Turning people into pigs is not allowed,” she hissed. “Even brothers.”

“I didn’t do it, it just happened. Anyway, you must admit it’s a better shape for him,” said Esk evenly.

Equal Rites

They say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.

The last thing the wizard Drum Billet did, before Death laid a bony hand on his shoulder, was to pass on his staff of power to the eighth son of an eighth son. Unfortunately for his colleagues in the chauvinistic (not to say misogynistic) world of magic, he failed to check that the baby in question was a son. Everybody knows that there’s no such thing as a female wizard. But now it’s gone and happened, there’s nothing much anyone can do about it. Let the battle of the sexes begin…

✿ Witches!
✿ An entire world to fall in love with and never leave.
✿ You’ll laugh so hard, you’ll cry.
✿ Women doing things they’re “not supposed to”
✿ And, you know, totally owning at it, like you do.

    • I’ve only read a few of his books so far, too, but I buy them whenever I see them around. This year, I really want to try to read at least one a month (and some of them are pretty short, like this is around, I think, 230-ish pages). I LOVE his humor, though!

    • That seems to be Pratchett’s overall style, and I absolutely love it, especially the way he uses it. I so recommend reading … pretty much anything by Pratchett this year? I started with Mort, because I love Death, and the Death trilogy is still one of my favorites. I might just reread it this year. xD

  1. Those snippets are so great! I’m hooked! Terry Pratchett is an author I really need to read one of these days. Thanks for sharing! Hope you have an awesome weekend! 🙂

    • I so highly recommend that you do! I haven’t read as many of his books as I’d like, but I do love his work. I recommend the Death Trilogy (it starts with Mort). I loved it.

  2. Breana M.

I need to read more books by this author. I like the quotes, and I’m going to add this one to my TBR List.

  3. Happy Friday!
Today on my blog I am sharing the first line from Waltz in the Wilderness by Kathleen Denly: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2020/01/31/first-line-friday-121/. I am just getting into the novel, so I will share the first line from chapter 2 here.
“Daniel thanked the postman and stepped away from the window. Tapping the single envelope against his palm, he strode past the long line of men who, like him, had been waiting hours for news from home.”
Hope you have an excellent weekend!

    • I do, too, but it’s going to take … time? Also getting my hands on all of them. It seems like a pretty worthy venture, though.

    • Ummm … yes! I’d still turn my brothers into pigs now, just for laughs. And they’re “adults” now, so they’d have to forgive me, because that’s what adults do. 😉 Muahaha.
