It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.
Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

“I suppose they don’t want us to get any ideas about sharing,” said Shuthmili, looking pensive, and wrapped the blanket around her shoulders.
“In case hitting your head on the doorframe all the time really puts you in the mood, I guess,” said Csorwe without thinking, then wished she hadn’t.
Book Reveal
What if you knew how and when you will die?
Csorwe does. She will climb the mountain, enter the Shrine of the Unspoken, and gain the most honored title: sacrifice. On the day of her foretold death, however, a powerful mage offers her a new fate.
Csorwe leaves her home, her destiny, and her god to become the wizard’s loyal sword-hand — stealing, spying, and killing to help him reclaim his seat of power in the homeland from which he was exiled.
But Csorwe and the wizard will soon learn – gods remember, and if you live long enough, all debts come due.
Reasons to Read
✿ Angering the gods, which is always lovely fun.
✿ You know, because gods are entertaining when they’re angry.
✿ Suave, sarcastic wizard to fall in love with.
✿ I picture him as Idris Elba, which is a win on its own. Just saying.
✿ LGBTQ rep.
✿ Doomed woman learning to be fierce.
✿ Political power struggle … but with stabbiness!
I’m excited to start this, and your hints are making it very tempting. The wizard sounds like fun😁
I’ve only just started myself, and I’ve liked what I’ve read of him so far. There’s enough for that opinion to change, I suppose, but I like him for now, at least. xD
Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid only of standing still. —Dawanjir proverb. Is the opening of The Killing Fog. It is so good so far ❤️
Oooh, is it? I just got this book from Amazon First Reads. that’s exciting. I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying it!
Super interested in this one. Plus it has LGBTQ rep which I always love. Love the cover
Isn’t it pretty?! I was really excited for it, and it’s a little slower getting into it than I expected, but I’m enjoying it so far.
Happy Friday!
Today on my blog I am sharing the first line from The Blue Cloak by Shannon McNear: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2020/02/07/first-line-friday-122/. I haven’t started the book yet, so I will share a line from the novel I am reading with my Freshmen Honors class, Elsewhere.
“The end came quickly, and there wasn’t any pain.”
Hope you have an excellent weekend! 🙂❤️📚
Oooh, ominous! Happy reading.
you had me at angering the gods.
this sounds amazing.
RIGHT?! I sure hope it lives up to it, but gosh that blurb sounded great. xD
This one is coming up for me. You are ahead :p
Then why do I feel so hopelessly behind?! *flails* D:
Over achieved much? Or you are skipping around because mood reader? Or you didnt have any February 11 relases?
I had all the February 11 releases haha. That’s why I feel so behind. xD And February 25 releases. And just … never ending.
And yet no IITB. I question your choices.
Hey, in my defense, you only JUST told me how much you enjoyed it. Where would I have the time?
You just should have known and WARNED me
I’ll keep that in mind for future reference.
Thank you. I mean I give you free shelter in my head
I love a sarcastic wizard. This sounds awesome! Thanks for sharing! Hope you have a great weekend! 🙂
Me, too. Sarcastic characters are the best. :3
Love your reasons to read. Plus the 56 quote. So, yep, going on the TBR list.
I hope you enjoy it when you get a chance to read it! I haven’t finished, but it’s been an interesting beginning, at least.
Fun snippets! I really like the first line from my current audiobook: “It’s harder to charm a chicken than you might think.” (from The Mystwick School of Musicraft by Jessica Khoury)
Oh boy, is it ever. xD Love that opening. Immediately makes you ask questions (but not too many because … chickens are delicious little bundles of evil so of course lol).
Sounds like a promising read.
It’s interesting so far!
Sounds like a good one! Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.
Sounds like a book I could really get into! Happy weekend!
Sounds like one I could really get into! Happy weekend!
I’ve seen this one around. Looks like a fun read.
I’m enjoying it so far, but I’ve just started. I guess that leaves a lot of time for something to go wrong. xD
I wonder how the name Csorwe is pronounced. I would have trouble with that. My quotes from Ordinary Hazards
There’s a pronunciation guide in the beginning of the book (THANK GOODNESS, because I started to complain about just that before thinking to flip back and check haha). It’s “ksor-way” with the stress on the first syllable.
Ooh! I can’t wait to pick this one up!

I’m not familiar with this one but angering gods sounds promising. Happy reading!
Angering gods is always fun, in my opinion. xD
I’ve had my eye on this book for a while. I hope I can get to it this year.
Marie @ Pages to Explore
Ooooh, THAT 56% SNIPPET! That fuels me with motivation to see if I can sit down and binge read to get there! I totally forgot/didn’t realize there was LGBT+ rep, but yessssss, that makes me more happy to have an eARC
And lol, I was wondering if you were gonna use The Unspoken Name for your first line friday post. 😉
I haven’t gotten there yet, but yeees. It gives me hope that Csorwe does, indeed, develop some form of a personality between now and then. xD *crosses fingers*
I was going to use something else, but the opening was a little blah, even though the whole book ended up being really good LOL. So I went with this.
Fingers crossed!
Oooh, what else were you reading?
Ummmm. Stuff. xD I was reading Twist by Sarah Cannon, and while I really loved that one, the beginning wasn’t really a grabber. I was just about to start Black Leviathan, too, but since I wasn’t actually ready to start it yet, I decided not to use it. xD
Gotcha! And wow, I just looked up Twist and it sounds so cute!
It iiiis. You should read it when you get a chance! I think you’d like it. And it’d be a nice palette cleanser between some of the heavier books you’re reading, since it’s a little easier to fall into. xD
