Minion’s Favorite Books (MG Recommendations from an MG Reader)

Posted February 15, 2020 by Sammie in discussions, mid-grade, recommendations / 22 Comments

Today is my minion’s birthday, and she’s a whole nine years old, so I decided to let her do the blog post for today.

Minion is what I would call a reluctant reader. She can read, and she’s actually quite good at it, she just doesn’t particularly feel the need to do it. Obviously, she was swapped at birth, but since this is the offspring hubby and I are stuck with, we make the best of it. Which means that when she finds something that she does like, we take notice and try to get the entire series in front of her and then find similar books.

So today, Minion is going to talk about her favorite books and why, in particular, she likes them.

Since today’s not about me, I’m going to go slither into the background and hush for a while. Amazing, right? I didn’t realize I was capable of that, either. So here we go.

Dragon Divider

Amelia Fang

Barberic Ball     Unicorn Lords     Memory Thief     Lost Yeti Treasures     Half-Moon Holiday

Why I like this series:
πŸ’ž They’re looking for a missing person.
πŸ’ž It’s got vampires and faeries.
πŸ’ž I like Amelia Fang.
πŸ’ž It’s got a fun mystery.

Dragon Divider

Skeleton Man

Skeleton Man     Return of Skeleton Man

Why I like this book:
πŸ’ž It’s a mystery.
πŸ’žSomeone’s parents went missing, and an uncle came that wasn’t really an uncle.
πŸ’ž It was a man that ate off his flesh.
πŸ’ž It’s about a skeleton who tries to eat a different person.
πŸ’ž (Pssst … she means a wendigo, but doesn’t know the word)

Dragon Divider

Unicorn Princesses

Sunbeam's Shine     Flash's Dash     Bloom's Ball     Prism's Paint     Breeze's Blast

Why I like this book:
πŸ’ž There’s a quest to find a unicorn’s emerald.
πŸ’ž It has magic and unicorns.
πŸ’ž There’s a cactus that talks to the human girl.

Dragon Divider

Dork Diaries

Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life     Tales from a Not-So-Popular Party Girl     Tales from a Not-So-Talented Pop Star     Tales from a Not-So-Graceful Ice Princess     Tales from a Not-So-Smart Miss Know-It-All

Why I like it:
πŸ’ž It’s funny.
πŸ’ž Nikki is always complaining about stuff and telling us that she’s writing in her diary and has to stop.
πŸ’ž It’s cool to see what happens next.

Dragon Divider

Ivy & Bean

Ivy and Bean     Ghost That Had to Go     Break the Fossil Record     Take Care of the Babysitter     Bound to be Bad

Why I like it:
πŸ’ž Ivy and Bean always try to do something and fail.
πŸ’ž Like in one book, they were hunting for fossils to try to get their record in a book, but they just found dog bones.
πŸ’ž Their adventures are fun.
πŸ’ž I like that they’re good friends and they try to do everything together.

Dragon Divider

Bad Kitty

Gets a Bath     Happy Birthday     Meets the Baby     For President     Drawn to Trouble

Why I like it:
πŸ’ž It’s funny, and Bad Kitty does silly things, like tries to go for President.
πŸ’ž I like that he’s trying to do things that cats don’t do.
πŸ’ž I like all the other cats, except for Stinky Kitty.
πŸ’ž I like how the owner’s trying to tell Bad Kitty to do something, but he doesn’t listen.
πŸ’ž (This sounds like someone else I know. JUST SAYING.)

Dragon Divider

Captain Underpants

Adventures of     Attack of the Talking Toilets     Invasion     Perilous Plot     Wrath of the Wicked

Why I like it:
πŸ’ž It’s exploring and trying to save the world.
πŸ’ž It’s funny because it’s a superhero flying around in underwear and a cape.
πŸ’ž I like that he tries to save the world by killing monsters and robots and stuff.

Dragon Divider

Naptime for Slippers

Naptime for Slippers

Why I like it:
πŸ’ž A dog is trying to go to sleep, but it just can’t fall asleep.
πŸ’ž The dog does a bunch of things, sometimes things a human would do.
πŸ’ž The dog is kind of like me, because I can never fall asleep.

Dragon Divider

I Survived

Titanic     Shark attacks     Hurricane Katrina     Pearl Harbor     San Francisco Earthquake

Why I like it:
πŸ’ž There’s a lot of adventure.
πŸ’ž Something always goes wrong, like a ship or plane crashing into something, a volcano going off.
πŸ’ž It’s always someone trying to get away from danger, but they always end up in it.
πŸ’ž It’s things that really happened.

Dragon Divider

Fresh Brats

Fresh Brats

Why I like it:
πŸ’ž I like that it’s a poem about a person doing something they’re not supposed to.
πŸ’ž It’s funny.
πŸ’ž I like the illustrations, because it really shows what the person’s doing and in a funny way.
πŸ’ž It’s something that I would probably do. I would put bugs in things.

  1. Happy birthday to your minion! My oldest minion had a birthday on Wednesday😁 February is the best month, I guess! Love all these recommendations.

    • Thank you! Happy belated birthday to your minion, as well. February sure seems like a popular time for birthdays. I haven’t figured out why yet. Almost my daughter’s entire generation is born in February. xD My younger sister’s birthday is the day before minion’s, and then the entire week has another … five, I think? Maybe six birthdays from all my cousins’ kids. My one cousin, all THREE of her kids were born this week, exactly two years apart. It’s pretty freaking amazing haha. What are the odds?

Wow, what a great idea. I love that you let her talk about her favourite books. And Happy Birthday to your daughter! πŸŽ‚

    • She’s not very bookish, but she loves seeing her posts come to life on the blog, so I figure it’s an easy way to get her excited about some aspect of it. xD And thank you very much!

  3. Happy Birthday to your daughter! Mine is on Tuesday, so I think February is a great month to have a birthday. πŸ™‚ My kiddos loved Dork Diaries and Captain Underpants, too. I’m assuming she’s read Diary of a Wimpy Kid? My kids loved those, too!

    • There have been A LOT of birthdays in February. I don’t even know what. I think I missed some memo or something? xD Happy birthday! I hope you get all the cake. πŸ˜‰

Oh yes, she enjoys that one, too! And Dog Man (though, I think she likes Captain Underpants more). And also Kylie Jean. I was sort of surprised she didn’t add that to her list.

    • Thank you! We sure try. I know several people who did, too, and my brother-in-law was one of them. He was right about her age or a little older. And she’s just starting to find books that she’s interested in (and actually asked for two separate series for her birthday, which is a first!). So here’s to hoping. πŸ™‚

    • Thank youuuu. There was cake. It was a unicorn. I wish I could send you some. Maybe? *tries to smoosh cake through the computer* Someone needs to invent a convenient form of teleportation already. xD
