It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

Opening Quote

But beware! A shadow will cover you, larger than that cast by any other dragon of this world. Its body is violent and as black as the night through which it flies. Black as the fog from which it strikes. Black as the lightless chasm from whence it was born at the beginning of time. Flee if you encounter this shadow. For nothing can save you otherwise. He is the father of all great dragons, and his name is Gargantuan.

— Third book of The Crystal Drachen Ordinance

First Lines

The schooner glided through the air as its wooden hull pierced thick clouds of fog. Delicate wisps of mist crept silently upward, dissolved by the brightly shining sun as they rose.

Slaves! The Taijirin use slaves, he realized.

He wouldn’t end up that way. He couldn’t. He hadn’t battled his way back from the depths of the Cloudmere to live out the rest of his life as a captive. Frantically, he racked his brain to come up with an escape plan, resisting the urge to lunge for the crystal casing and jump overboard.

Beware! A shadow will cover you, larger than that cast by any other dragon of this world. Black as the lightless chasm from whence it was born at the beginning of time.

In the coastal city Skargakar, residents make a living from hunting dragons and use them for everything from clothing to food, while airborne ships hunt them in the white expanse of a cloud sea, the Cloudmere.

Lian does his part carving the kyrillian crystals that power the ships through the Cloudmere, but when he makes an enemy of a dangerous man, Lian ships out on the next vessel available as a drachenjager, or dragon hunter.

He chooses the wrong ship. A fanatic captain, hunts more than just any dragon. His goal is the Firstborn Gargantuan—and Adaron is prepared to sacrifice everything for revenge.

    • IT IS! And it was fabulous. And also terrifying. Because I’m sorry, but it’s hard to really be afraid of what a whale’s going to do to a crew. But a freaking giant fire-breathing dragon?! YEEES. That thing does damage.

      • I just finished it and OMG. I wasn’t ready to leave the world. T_T I want about three more books here, please. Definitely loved this one!

    • Lol really? I loved the cover from the first time I saw it, but I guess I just thought it was supposed to be an ancient dragon. I showed it to hubby, and he said it looked like a giant turtle LOL. So I guess you’ve got a point.

    • Is it that obvious? xD Guilty as charged. Thank you, though! I do enjoy recommending books to patrons, and I’ve got a decent success rate. I mean, you can’t win them all, I suppose, but I’ve had people go out of their way to come in just to tell me how much they loved a book I put in their hands, and that’s just the best feeling to me!

    • Pffft you cheated and used logic. 😉 I thought about using a different book, maybe one of my upcoming reads, but I just was loving this one so much that I had to go with it in the end lol.

  1. Now that’s a fun book reveal! Happy Friday! On my blog I’m sharing the first line from a Mary Connealy book, Woman of Sunlight. Here’s the next line:

“Her face was peppered with half-healed blisters left from having chicken pox, but she resisted the urge to slap her hands over her scabby cheeks.”

  2. Happy Saturday! 😊
Yesterday I shared the first few lines from Blind Dates, Bridesmaids, and Other Disasters by Aspen Hadley. I’m just starting chapter 10, so I’ll share a line from there.
“Sunday night I was lounging in the comfy over-stuffed chair in the corner of my room, flipping through an old copy of Pride and Prejudice that I’d read a few times.”
Hope you have a great weekend filled with awesome reading time. ❤📖

    • I think most dragon books don’t tend to be like Game of Thrones. xD Though, that book/show just wasn’t my cup of tea. I definitely recommend getting a healthy dose of dragons, in some form, though. 😀
