Friday 56 || Humor and Heart

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

First Lines

I’m sharing a little more than the “first line,” because this opening was just … perfect. You need to read the whole thing. Especially you parents out there.

Not so many years ago, Shenya the Widow was a void-cold killer. And as hobbies—no passions—go, it was extraordinarily fulfilling. Hunt all night, feast at dawn, take one’s pick of the choicest males before the long day’s sleep … oh yes. She still fantasizes about it—though, sadly, fantasy is all she has left. This is because Shenya the Widow has been conquered, mind and body, by an ancient and terrible force.

Motherhood.

A wrong to be righted, a challenge to be met, and a monetary reward to be collected: Sandy knew that this was the type of mission that spoke to Hood. She knew it was the type that required more than a touch of good luck.

And Hood didn’t know it, but his good luck had ended.

But that’s the thing with luck; it comes and it goes, and the lower intelligences never suspect that it has a source.

The Last Human

The last human in the universe is on the run from a godlike intelligence in this rip-roaring debut space opera.

Sarya is the civilized galaxy’s worst nightmare: a Human.

Most days, Sarya doesn’t feel like the most terrifying creature in the galaxy.

Most days, she’s got other things on her mind. Like hiding her identity among the hundreds of alien species roaming the corridors of Watertower Station. Or making sure her adoptive mother doesn’t casually eviscerate one of their neighbors. Again.

And most days, she can almost accept that she’ll never know the truth–that she’ll never know why humanity was deemed too dangerous to exist. Or whether she really is–impossibly–the lone survivor of a species destroyed a millennium ago.

That is, until an encounter with a bounty hunter and a miles-long kinetic projectile leaves her life and her perspective shattered.

Thrown into the universe at the helm of a stolen ship–with the dubious assistance of a rebellious spacesuit, an android death enthusiast on his sixtieth lifetime, and a ball of fluff with an IQ in the thousands–Sarya begins to uncover an impossible truth.

What if humanity’s death and her own existence are simply two moves in a demented cosmic game, one played out by vast alien intellects? Stranger still, what if these mad gods are offering Sarya a seat at their table–and a second chance for humanity?

The Last Human is a sneakily brilliant, gleefully oddball space-opera debut–a masterful play on perspective, intelligence, and free will, wrapped in a rollicking journey through a strange and crowded galaxy.

This is a new weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. This week’s prompt is: RomComs.

I actually don’t tend to read a whole lot of RomComs, so I don’t think I have five on my TBR? So I’m just going to go with romance broadly … which is another genre I don’t read much, but at least there’s five of them on my TBR.

My Lady Jane     Letters to the Lost     The Extraordinaries     Storm and Fury     The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue

  1. Happy Friday! I hope you and your family are all doing OK in this crazy time. God’s got us all!
Today on my blog, I’m sharing from The Gift of Forgiveness by Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2020/03/20/first-line-friday-128/. I’m currently reading Carolina Breeze by Denise Hunter. It is SO good. I’ll share a line from there.

    • Yaaaay, first! Only because I totally cheated and did it early. xD Thanks for hosting it! I actually enjoyed looking through my TBR (and cleaned up a bit of it, too, at the same time, so two birds with one stone). I’m really looking forward to that one, especially, since I have a feeling I’m going to love the whole series!

    • Ha, I’m glad you liked it! As a parent, I got to that last line and just lost it. Because … yes. I can relate to that. It does look like this is his debut, yup! Definitely an author I’ll be watching.

  3. From your TBR list, I really enjoyed Storm & Fury. I’m a little nervous that Devil in the White City is moving up my TBR list – I didn’t finish it last time I started, and now I really need to!

    • I’m glad to hear you liked Storm & Fury! Are you looking forward to the sequel? :3 I keep seeing it pop up, like a continuous reminder that I need to read the first one. xD

  4. Ooh LOVE E’s new weekly meme! I’ve obviously missed the start of it but I’m gonna get started with it on Monday. Exciting times 😀

Also, those first lines are SO good! I’m super curious about this book and might just get a sample of it on Kindle when it’s out! Great post, Sammie!

    • You didn’t, actually! It starts tomorrow. xD So there’s still time if you want to joint. 😉 I just decided to merge mine with my Friday posts, because I’m a rebel.

You totally should! I’m really enjoying it so far.

    • It’s definitely a unique writing style, and it took me a little getting used to, but it’s very engaging and immersive and I’m enjoying it!
