It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

Opening Epigraph

“Like one, that on a lonesome road

Doth walk in fear and dread,

And having once turned around walks on,

And turns no more his head;

Because he knows, a frightful fiend

Doth close behind him tread.”

–Samuel Taylor Coleridge,

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

First Lines

A tattered extract discovered upon the corpse of a Kadoshim demon, the Year 131 of the Age of Lore:

They think we are broken.

We are not.

They think we are defeated.

We are not.

One of the few things that Drem did remember clearly from those tangled moments when the bear attacked was the sight of his da setting his feet and raising his sword, and the battle-cry that had issued from his lips.

Truth and courage.

Why that?

A Time of Dread

A race of warrior angels, the Ben-Elim, once vanquished a mighty demon horde. Now they rule the Banished lands, but their peace is brutally enforced.

In the south, hotheaded Riv is desperate to join the Ben-Elim’s peacekeeping force, until she unearths a deadly secret.

In the west, the giantess Sig investigates demon sightings and discovers signs of an uprising and black magic.

And in the snowbound north, Drem, a trapper, finds mutilated corpses in the forests. The work of a predator, or something far darker?

It’s a time of shifting loyalties and world-changing dangers. Difficult choices need to be made. Because in the shadows, demons are gathering, waiting for their time to rise…

Reasons to Read

✿ Fight between the Ben-Elim and demons!
✿ But from the perspective of the humans caught in between.
✿ High fantasy world that’s easy to fall into.
✿ War. Huh. What is it good for? Writing books about it.
✿ Danger lurking … well, everywhere, technically.
✿ Stabbiness and death!

This is a new weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next week’s prompt is: Humor.

This is one of my favorite genres, so I’m particularly excited about this! I’m going to take this pretty loosely. They may not be categorized solely as humor, but they’re books that should be funny, either way.

Hyperbole and a Half     All Those Explosions Were Someone Else's Fault     Warlock Holmes: The Finality Problem     Tristan Strong Destroys The World     Practical Demonkeeping

    • That’s pretty much how I felt when I saw that book three of this series was already coming out. xD I keep meaning to pick up The Faithful and the Fallen series, and I think I even bought half of it, and just never got around to reading them. So before I got too far behind, I went, nope, definitely picking this series up, dang it. xD I started it yesterday during a work break, and when I looked down again, I’d already read 10% of it somehow? Sure didn’t seem like I was that far already. Shenanigans lol.

    • I’m not sure what you mean … but I’ve definitely enjoyed it so far. It’s been really easy to read and get into. 🙂

  1. I’ve been seeing that series talked about a lot so I know it’s rather popular. Hope you all are doing well with everything going on. I love Christopher Moore and Practical Demonkeeping is a great read. I also really enjoyed Hyperbole and a Half. So great books here. Have a wonderful weekend!

    • I’ve been meaning to read Gwynne since everyone was still talking about his previous series, The Faithful and the Fallen. That’s how behind I am. xD

I think you’re the first person I’ve seen who has mentioned reading Practical Demonkeeping, so I’m really glad to hear that you enjoyed it!

    • I hope you enjoy it! I started reading it during a work break and looked down at the end of my break and had already whipped through 10%, it was just so easy to get into and read. xD

    • I’m almost halfway through and enjoying it so far! It’s hard to get used to all the point of views, since there’s quite a few, but once I got a bit in, I’m hooked!
