It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
Would you bargain with Baron Dire?
What would you ask for?
What would you be willing to give up?

Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

A Time of Courage     They Went Left     Eden

A Time of Courage by John Gwynne

This series was a ride. I wasn’t quite the target audience for it, because this book was basically just 700 pages of battles, which isn’t quite for me. I need a little breather in between. Despite that, phew, there were so many emotions in this, and I highly recommend this series for anyone looking for epic fantasy but wanting a world that’s easy to get into and understand. I went through about 20 years in the two weeks I read this series, and I feel battle weary myself. I’ve seen things. I’ve lost people (including my favorite, like always).

They Went Left by Monica Hesse

If you love World War II historical fiction, read this! If you don’t … well, read this anyway. What I especially loved about this book is that it takes place after the war, which is somehow, ironically, a very novel time period. I can’t remember reading a World War II book that didn’t take place during the war? But boy how I appreciated it. There was something still painful, yet somehow emotionally uplifting, about watching characters who had suffered atrocities being able to find some sense of normalcy, grasping to whatever joy they could find, and putting their lives back together. That’s not to say that there’s not still struggles and emotional blows, because there absolutely is (and not a single character doesn’t have PTSD), but compared to a lot of other WWII books I’ve read, there’s just this pervasive feeling of hope in this book that I so appreciated.

Eden by Tim Lebbon

I have grown up loving nature vs. humans movies (Jurassic Park, King Kong, Anaconda, etc), but I’d actually never read a book about it, for some reason. No, not even Jurassic Park, as much as I loved the movie series. So this was a first for me! Ultimately, I really enjoyed it, and I think I’ll probably look for more of these in the future. The world Lebbon creates here is both beautiful and terrifying. It’s a warning and a promise: keep destroying the planet, and eventually, the planet will fight back.

Darkness never works alone…

Nadya doesn’t trust her magic anymore. Serefin is fighting off a voice in his head that doesn’t belong to him. Malachiasz is at war with who–and what–he’s become.

As their group is continually torn apart, the girl, the prince, and the monster find their fates irrevocably intertwined. They’re pieces on a board, being orchestrated by someone… or something. The voices that Serefin hears in the darkness, the ones that Nadya believes are her gods, the ones that Malachiasz is desperate to meet—those voices want a stake in the world, and they refuse to stay quiet any longer.

Sooo … I didn’t get very far on this at all, because I was reading some other things. This has nothing at all to do with this book, because I’m loving it. I’m planning on doubling down this week and finishing this book. On one hand, I don’t want it to end because then it’s over and I have to wait at least another year. On the other … I need to know what happens, darn it! Reading struggles are hard. D:

First Frost has touched Cape Fen, and that means Baron Dire has returned. For as long as anyone can remember, Baron Dire has haunted the town come winter, striking magical bargains and demanding unjust payment in return. The Serling sisters know better than to bargain, lest they find themselves hunted by the Baron’s companion, the Wolf.

Then the Wolf attacks Eliza’s sister Winnie. They manage to escape, but they know the Wolf will be back, because the Wolf only attacks those who owe the Baron Dire. Winnie would never bargain, so that must mean that someone has struck a deal with Winnie as the price.

Eliza embarks on a journey to save her sister, but as she untangles the links between Baron Dire, the Wolf, and her family, she discovers a complicated web of bargains that cross all of Cape Fen. If Eliza can learn the truth, she might be able to protect her sister, but the truth behind the bargain could put her own life in danger.

So far, this book has been really cute. There’s some great sibling bonds here, and I’m just loving it. Things are just starting to ramp up where I am, and I’m so curious to find out what happens. There’s already been a death. Yes, people will die (though it wasn’t graphic or anything, as per middle grade). I don’t have a lot to say yet, because I feel like it’s still early, but I’m enjoying this, and the writing is lovely.

Artificial Condition     Deeplight     The Forgotten Girl     Red, White & Royal Blue

Since I didn’t get to it last week, Artificial Condition is still on my upcoming reads. I actually plan to start it today, and I’m really looking forward to it!

Since I joined kind of late, I want to really get a jump on my OWLs TBR, which means I need to start reading Deeplight, and now seems like as good a time as any. Might as well continue the theme of gods gone wrong lol.

After that, I’m not 100% sure what I’m going to read. I have so many options, so many things I need to get read. Where do you even start?! I pushed back all the holds that came through Overdrive so I could catch up on ARCs, but I’ve got two here still that I should read before they expire. I can’t remember now which blog I saw The Forgotten Girl on, but it looks really good, and I’ve really been in the mood for something spooky, so hopefully this hits the spot before I go back to my ARCs.

Since everyone’s talking about it, I of course obviously have to read Red, White & Royal Blue, even though it’s romance and I don’t normally read it. FOMO is real, y’all. It’s got so much praise, and from what I’ve heard, I think I’m going to enjoy it anyway. I definitely need to get to this one, because I’ve been sitting on the hold list forever, and if I don’t read it in time, it’s gonna be months before I get another chance.

    • Yeah, if you aren’t interested in a lot of skirmishes, it probably isn’t for you. That wasn’t the case for the first book, but as the war ramps up, that’s basically what the entire third book ends up being.

Lucky! I requested an ARC, but I’m sitting in limbo, crossing my fingers that I might be approved before it comes out. xD

    • You’re better than I am! I have three left. Wait. I think. There’s four, right? Wow, I lose track so easily. xD I’m hoping to knock them all out in one week, pretty quickly, though. *crosses fingers*

  1. Sammie, glad to hear you have been enjoying your reading so much, even if you haven’t quite got to all the books you wanted to – I have that feeling constantly! 😅Do you not you’ve got me thinking that I don’t read WWII novels, but for the foggiest I don’t know why not because I watch WWII films and TV shows like they’re going out of fashion! 😏

I hope you continue enjoying your reading this week and good luck catching up on those books. Here’s my WWW post this week: https://thebookwormchronicles.wordpress.com/2020/04/15/www-wednesday-15th-april-2020/ 🙂

    • I do that, too, with certain genres. Certain media are just better for it than others sometimes. Like I absolutely LOVE apocalyptic weather movies, but I don’t read those books, for whatever reason.

    • Yaaay, I’m so glad to hear you’re enjoying it! I’m running behind (no surprise there), but I can’t wait to read the rest of these novellas.

    • Right? I couldn’t think of any, either. As much as I love my WWII books, I’ve always wanted something that continued after the war, and this one definitely delivers on that!

  2. I really loved RWARB for the mini history bites! There’s snippets of gay history about common historic figures that aren’t normally talked about as queer.

  3. I’m excited to hear your thoughts on Red, white and royal blue. I was so excited to read it, and then it kind of fell flat for me, but I’m looking forward to hearing what you think of it.

    • Aww, man. That’s a real bummer. It seems like everyone loved it, and I have a really bad track record with books like that, but I’m crossing my fingers!

  4. I think I’m determined to finish Ruthless Gods this weekend because… Yeah, I haven’t made much progress on it. Even though I have a blog tour read due Monday… I think that once I pick it up I will zoom through it. Tomorrow, it’s on! 😂 I’m enjoying it though… it’s a bit slow but still enjoyable! I hope you enjoy all your current and future reads! Curious to see what you’ll think of RW&RB. I enjoyed it but wasn’t head over heels for it like the majority–super unpopular opinion mine! 🙈

    • DID YOU ZOOM THROUGH IT YET?! xD I’m so late to replying to comments haha. I ended up zooming through it over the weekend, though.
