It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.
Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

Eliza took a breath and then four more, refilling her body with oxygen and steeling herself before looking at Zilpha. Her aunt watched her more than the road. “I’m tired is all. I didn’t sleep after we got home.”
“Bad dreams?”
“I never dream.”
Book Reveal
First Frost has touched Cape Fen, and that means Baron Dire has returned. For as long as anyone can remember, Baron Dire has haunted the town come winter, striking magical bargains and demanding unjust payment in return. The Serling sisters know better than to bargain, lest they find themselves hunted by the Baron’s companion, the Wolf.
Then the Wolf attacks Eliza’s sister Winnie. They manage to escape, but they know the Wolf will be back, because the Wolf only attacks those who owe the Baron Dire. Winnie would never bargain, so that must mean that someone has struck a deal with Winnie as the price.
Eliza embarks on a journey to save her sister, but as she untangles the links between Baron Dire, the Wolf, and her family, she discovers a complicated web of bargains that cross all of Cape Fen. If Eliza can learn the truth, she might be able to protect her sister, but the truth behind the bargain could put her own life in danger.

This is a new weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next week’s prompt is: Hype from the past.
Not even gonna lie, there is SO MUCH of this on my list that the past might just rise up and smother me while I’m sleeping at this point. I own half these books, and I’m trying to get around to reading them. I’m just … hopelessly behind. At least I know I’m not the only one!
I’m one of the few readers who didn’t like Caraval, but clearly most readers loved it. Daughter of Smoke and Bone, though, was amazing!

I’ve seen a lot of people with similar tastes to me (like you) saying that, so I’m sort of lowering my expectations going into that one. xD I’m glad to hear you liked Daughter of Smoke and Bone, though! I’m really looking forward to that one.
First of all, let me say that I absolutely LOVED the cover of The Wolf of Cape Fen! Also, the first line caught my attention, so I think that I’ll check it out 🙂
It really is a gorgeous cover, isn’t it?! It definitely caught my eye. I hope you enjoy it. I thought it was a great book! I’ll definitely be watching out for more books by this author.
The Lies of Locke Lamora is on my TBR, too. I own it, so I have no excuse.
And good luck with A Curious Beginning (whenever you get to it). I know so many people who loved it… but I wasn’t one of them. It made me very sad. 🙁

I mean … I own A LOT of books, too. There’s always a good excuse. I can lend you one of mine? xD
I’ve started it, and I’m kind of on the fence. I want to love the main character, but at the same time, she’s a little too “not like other girls” that it’s frustrating me a little. I’m only 10% in, so we’ll see how it goes.
Never dream? That would suck!
Happy weekend, stay safe!

But it does serve a very interesting purpose in the story! And her reasoning is sad but understandable.
Thank you for including the epigraph. I notice that the moon is dreaming, but Eliza doesn’t.
I’m currently working through books I own, too.

Yes! It’s so fascinating, and that plays a big part in the story, and when you find out why it sort of breaks your heart a little. But in a good way. :3
This looks like a book one could get lost in. That is a good plan these days since the news is not positive.
It definitely is! It’s also historical fiction (which surprised me a little), so it was kind of neat getting to see the struggle of party lines, etc. xD It was definitely a much-needed bit of escapism.
Sounds cute and interesting. Hope you enjoy it.
I did! It was a fun, beautiful read.
I’m sharing the first line from The Englisch Daughter by Cindy Woodsmall and Erin Woodsmall on my blog. This book is FANTASTIC! I’m currently on chapter 17 so I’ll share a line from there.
“Roy glanced at the clock on the wall of the social services’ private meeting room.”
Hope you have a great weekend!

What an interesting snippet! Glad you’re enjoying it so far.
Loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone and And I Darken! Hope you get to read them soon. 🙂

Thanks! I can’t wait to pick up Daughter of Smoke and Bone, especially. 😀
The Lies of Locke Lamora is one of my favorites – Hope you like it!
Check out my Friday spotlight and my review of Shorefall
I’m so glad to hear that! I’m waiting for my brother-in-law to finish it so I can read it, but so far he’s loving it!
I had And I Darken on my TBR at some point but it didn’t survive one of my shelf purges! Hope you like this and the others though!! <3
I actually bought the whole series on Kindle for $3 when it was on sale, so I’ll get to it eventually, but at least it’s not taking up space. And everyone knows Kindle books don’t count. 😉
I feel you on being hopelessly behind LOL. I feel like I’m never going to catch up.
I think that’s just a state of being for a lot of bloggers at this point. xD It’s almost a rite of passage.
