First Line Friday 56 || Cute, Cheesy Humor

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

First Lines

It all started at 12:34 on a Saturday afternoon.

The exact time is important. It couldn’t have happened five minutes earlier or an hour later.

It had to be then.

The tower jiggled to and fro and then, finally, returned to its original height after passing completely under the wires and finishing the dance. It started striding forward again. It seemed a little jauntier, as if it had won a contest.

“Where does it think it’s going?” muttered Modesty, as if she wanted to have a word with it.

What We Found in the Corn Maze and How It Saved a Dragon

When three kids discover a book of magic spells that can only be cast a few short minutes a day, they’ll need all the time they can get to save a dying magical world, its last dragon, and themselves!

An ordinary day turns extraordinary when twelve-year-old Cal witnesses his neighbor summon a slew of lost coins without lifting a finger. Turns out she has a secret manual of magic spells…but they only work sometimes. And they’re the most boring spells ever:
To Change the Color of a Room
To Repair a Chimney
To Walk With Stilts
To Untangle Yarn

Useless! But when Cal, his friend Drew, and his neighbor Modesty are suddenly transported to the world the spells come from — a world that’s about to lose its last dragon — they’ll have to find a way to use the oddly specific incantations to save the day, if only they can figure out when magic works.

From the inventive mind of Henry Clark comes a hilariously wacky adventure about magic, friendship, a lookout tower come to life, a maze in the shape of a dragon, an actual dragon named Phlogiston, and lots and lots of popcorn.

This is a new weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Monday’s prompt is: superheroes.

Renegades     Loki: Where Mischief Lies     Not Your Sidekick     Devil's Cape     Dreadnought

I love me some superhero books, and they come in all different flavors!

I’ve been meaning to read Renegades for a while now, and it’s maybe not traditional superheroes, but it’s heroes with powers, and I’m going to count that.

Villains can be superheroes, too! Wait … something like that. I’m pretty sure Loki manages to pull it of in Loki: Where Mischief Lies. I actually got this for Christmas and haven’t read it yet, for some inexplicable reason? I have absolutely no excuses, because this was one read that I was super looking forward to, since Loki has always been my favorite.

Not Your Sidekick is the first book in the Sidekick Squad series, and it looks super freaking cute! It feels very Sky High-ish, in a way that I absolutely love.

I’ve previously made posts before about needing more adult superhero books, and that post led me to discover Devil’s Cape as I was researching it, and I finally got a copy at Christmas! But I still haven’t read it. There seems to be a pattern here. It looks really good, though!

I’m not even sure how I stumbled across Dreadnought, but there’s a transgender protagonist and it sounds like it’ll be a fun read.

    • It is for sure a mouthful. Don’t try to say it five times fast. You’ll die of dehydration by the time you finish. It was super cute, though! Such a fun read. The long title makes sense, given the content of the book. xD

    • You’ll probably get to it before I do. xD I feel like I’m about to be drowning in upcoming releases (in the best possible way haha).

It is the best, most useless-adjacent spell ever. The magic in this was just great, because it was things kids found absolutely useless and I was like … hmmm … where can I get one of these spellbooks? xD

  1. Happy Friday! 🙂
Today on my blog I’m sharing from Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey by Abigail Wilson. It’s an excellent novel! Currently I’m reading Unveiling the Past by Kim Vogel Sawyer. I’m on chapter 19, so I’ll post a line from there.

Hope you have a great weekend!

  2. I dunno – I am probably not going to make a lot of sense. Tough.
I wish I had your taste in books. I want to be able to enjoy super hero type books. But I have tried. And tried. And tried. It just seems like something that could be so FUN to read, you know, like graphic novels?
Alas. I am your stereotypical mom/wife reading her erotica in the dead of night when the kiddies are sleeping.
BUT I do love your featured book. I think I will get it so I can share it with the kids. Wait. Is it kid friendly? Oh well.

    • Hey, there’s nothing wrong with liking erotica and such. Own the stereotype. Sometimes, no matter how much you want them to, certain types of books just don’t work for you at all. Can’t help that.

It’s middle grade, and definitely kid friendly! Perfectly clean. Filled with lots of goofy humor and a super easy-to-read, engaging voice.

    • You know, now that you mention it, the writing is a bit Pratchett-ish, almost, with the humor and the quirky absurdity. I thought it was really fun!

  3. What a fun cover! And it sounds like fun book too. I hope you enjoy it. I’ve got a soft spot for dragons too. 🙂

I haven’t read any of the superhero books on your TBR shelf. I have been wanting to read Renegades though.

    Have a great week.
