First Line Friday 56 || Bring On The Dragon

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

First Lines

The dragon was bigger than I remembered.

That was my first thought was we crept through the dark temple, entering the beast’s inner lair.

“The Monstrous Peak is treacherous, even on a good day. There are avalanches, falling rocks, and deadly creatures that would make you their dinner! And that’s if you even get across the ice field to begin with. Which”—he gave us a patronizing smile—”you will not.” He shrugged. “Why don’t you stay here instead and help me with my duties? If you can catch ten fish and bring them to me, I will give you a great reward.”

Ah, yes. Another side quest. Let’s just say I’d learned my lesson after the disaster at Ghost Hollow.

One wrong move, and it’s game over.

Welcome to DRAGON OPS, the world’s first augmented-reality video-game theme park. Set on a once-deserted island, our three beta players-classic gamer geek Ian; his adventure-seeking sister, Lily; and their too-cool-for-gaming cousin, Derek-have been lucky enough to score an invite to play before the fully immersive experience opens to the public.

But once inside, they find themselves trapped in a game taken over by a rogue AI dragon called Atreus, and suddenly the stakes go beyond the virtual world. With no cheat codes, guidebooks, save points, or do-overs, they’ll need all their cunning and video-game hacks to beat the game? and survive in real life.

Action-packed and unputdownable, Dragon Ops will thrill gamers and reluctant readers alike with high-tech adventure and electrifying twists and turns.

This is a weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Monday’s prompt is: unconventional format.

Code Name Verity     The Night Diary     Everything, Everything     This Is How You Lose the Time War     The Martian

There seems to be a theme here with the historical fiction. Is epistolary just very common in historical? Huh. I never even noticed. I tried to pick some that weren’t historical, just for some variety, but I still slipped Code Name Verity and The Night Diary onto this one, because they’ve both been on my TBR for a while now.

Then we come back to the present with Everything, Everything, the sole contemporary on the list today. Given that I don’t read a ton of contemporary, this maybe isn’t all that surprising.

And to round it off, we’ve got two futuristic books, This Is How You Lose the Time War and The Martian, both of which were recommendations that I’m actually really looking forward to!

This prompt was a little harder than I expected, since I did books in verse not long ago and decided to go with epistolary this time. I love the idea of this format, but I guess other than Illuminae, I’ve not actually read anything in a really unconventional format.

    • I don’t know, since I’ve never actually picked it up, but it’s supposed to be written with letters, I think? xD I didn’t realize that until someone told me, because I’ve never actually looked at it haha.

    • I’m halfway through it, and it’s a lot of fun so far. :3 Definitely the sort of thing you’d appreciate more as a gamer, though.

  1. Hi,
I have read Everything, Everything, really like that book.
I’ve added several of your books to my TBR list. Have a great day!

  2. Happy Friday! 🙂
On my blog I’m sharing from Until the Mountains Fall by Connilyn Cossette. I’m currently on chapter 20, so I’ll share from there.
“My family and Hakim’s family, along with Baz and his wife and daughters, were gathered around the long table in the courtyard, oil lamps flickering joyfully along its length.”
Hope you have a great weekend filled with awesome reading time. 😀❤📚
