First Line Friday 56 || Robot Gone Rogue

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

First Lines

I have the worst luck with bot-driven transports.

The first one had let me stow away in exchange for my collection of media files, with no ulterior motives, and had been so focused on its function that there had been hardly more communication between us than you’d have with a hauler bot. For the duration of the trip I had been alone with my media storage, just the way I like it. It had spoiled me into thinking all bot transports would be like that.

Then there was Asshole Research Transport.

56% Snippet

Again, I know in the telling it sounds like I was on top of this situation, but really, I was still just thinking, Oh shit oh shit oh shit. Combat bots are faster, stronger, and more heavily armed than me. Even if a SecSystem feed had been available, I couldn’t hack a combat bot without making a direct physical connection, and trying for that would result in me being torn apart. (I’ve been torn apart before, and on my list of things to avoid, it was right up there at the top.)

Rogue Protocol

SciFi’s favorite crabby A.I. is again on a mission. The case against the too-big-to-fail GrayCris Corporation is floundering, and more importantly, authorities are beginning to ask more questions about where Dr. Mensah’s SecUnit is.

And Murderbot would rather those questions went away. For good.

Reasons to Read

✿ Rogue AIs are always fun.
✿ Anything named Murderbot is obviously good company.
✿ Lots of dry humor and sarcasm.
✿ A compelling overarching mystery to be solved.
✿ Short read, so leaves plenty of time for excited flailing afterwards.
✿ Nicole @ Book-Wyrm-Knits will probably eat my soul if I don’t soon.

This is a weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Monday’s prompt is: blue cover.

I love color-themed posts, because it’s fun to see all the different shades and how the colors can be used so differently. So this was a particularly fun prompt for me.

Simply the Quest     Daughter of Smoke and Bone     How to Make Friends with the Dark     A Dragonbird in the Fern     Below

Simply the Quest sounds like a really funny take on the Greek Gods, and it’s book two in this series (not that I’ve read book one yet, but … its cover wasn’t blue, either). I bought these off a recommendation from Lilyfae @ Lily and the Fae and I’m looking forward to reading the series.

I’m probably the only person in the world who hasn’t read Daughter of Smoke & Bone yet, despite buying all the books now. The series sounds absolutely fabulous, so I really need to get to it sooner rather than later!

I think How to Make Friends with the Dark will be a new favorite of mine when I get around to reading it. The color is actually a really dark blue, and it looks so pretty in person. The computer doesn’t do it justice. It’s going to be a really sad read, though, and I haven’t emotionally been in the mood for that, so it’s been on my shelf since Christmas waiting for the desire to strike.

How about an upcoming release? Like … in 2021? xD This one’s still so far away, but as soon as I saw the cover for A Dragonbird in the Fern, I knew I was obviously destined to read it. The summary sounds great, too. But isn’t that cover gorgeous?! The protagonist has dyslexia, and I think that’s a pretty interesting POV.

And to round off this five, Below is based on Inuit mythology, which is so neat! I don’t think I’ve read too many books based on Inuit anything, so I definitely want to give this one a try.

    • Mine, too! It’s the best color. Also my birthstone color, so clearly a winner. I would also be really suspicious of anyone who didn’t love Murderbot lol.

    • Oh man, I didn’t know they were ever free! Pfft. I mean, I’ve gotten mine from the library, so I can’t really complain. xD They’re so good, though! You should definitely read them.

  1. I went into bot overload with the teasers, but adore the five blue covers for the TBR challenge. I would read all of those.

    • Honestly, out of the three, this one was definitely the most technical and I’m not a very technical person. But it’s a fun series.

  2. Happy Friday!
On my blog I’m sharing the first lines from The Socialite by J’nell Ciesielski. I’m currently on chapter 14, so I’ll share from there.
“Kat tipped the glass of wine to her mouth, but didn’t part her lips. She hated reds, especially dry ones, and they gave her a splitting headache.”
I hope you have a great weekend filled with awesome reading time! 😀❤📚

    • It’s a series of four novellas, culminating in a recently released full-length novel. It’s a really fun series!

  3. I love dry humor and sarcasm. Asshole Research Transport made me chuckle 🙂 Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend!

  4. I wondered it that was Martha Wells and it was! I actually haven’t read any of her work–yet. But I do hope to some day. I’m loving all those blue covers, especially Dragonbird in the Fern. I hope you have a great week!
