It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
Would you work at a Great Library if you had the chance?
What if the books there had a mind of their own?
What if working there meant your life was constantly in danger?

Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

The Faith Machine     The Jumbies

The Faith Machine by Tone Milazzo
★★★★☆ || Goodreads
I’ve been absolute trash lately for any sort of urban fantasy, people with powers sort of books, and this really fell into that category. I liked the twist in this that all the characters’ powers were born from struggle, and every single one of them were basically antiheroes. It’s a book full of mostly regular people with powers (some with quite inconvenient limitations, which was also fun) and it made them really relatable. The story is told from so many points of view, with short chapters, which really helped keep the story moving forward and making it seem like a quick read. I do admit that I was super confused at times from the point of view jumps, but I normally struggle with a lot of points of view. The ending was a little … bizarre. I’m not entirely satisfied with the outcome, because I feel like I missed something, but I did love the twist at the very end, and the last chapter was *chef’s kiss*.

The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste

This book is just so much yes. It’s one of two books of the month for the Middle Grade Marvels book club. I totally threw out the schedule, because I just couldn’t stop reading and had to know what happened. The Jumbies focuses on island life and uses Carribean-based mythology, which I absolutely loved. Despite being middle grade, it’s slightly dark, definitely creepy, and has some scary moments that were done so well. The atmosphere is creepy and wonderful, and the soft magic is beautifully done. I just loved everything about this, and I’m definitely going to be reading the other books in this series!

Technically, A Declaration of the Rights of Magicians still belongs here, but as I’ve made no progress on it in the past week, even though I’m still not ready to DNF it, I’m going to just … not feature it other than this brief mention.

Random Sh*t Flying Through The Air

Random Sh*t Flying Through The Air by Jackson Ford
Status: 21%

Teagan Frost’s life is finally back on track. Her role working for the government as a psychokinetic operative is going well and she might even be on course for convincing her crush to go out with her. But, little does she know, that sh*t is about to hit the fan . . .

A young boy with the ability to cause earthquakes has come to Los Angeles – home to the San Andreas, one of the most lethal fault lines in the world. If Teagan can’t stop him, the entire city – and the rest of California – could be wiped off the map.

This book opened with a freaking bang. Literally. There’s a freaking giant earthquake, and things go all wonky, and I was immediately sucked back into this world. I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about the antagonist of this book that’s being set up so far. Whereas the antagonists in the first were so well done, it’s so easy to hate the antagonist in this already and I’m really craving more depth to them. Plus other factors about them that are small spoilers so I won’t say them, but yeah. I’m also in love with Teagan. I feel her in my soul.

Mistborn: The Final Empire

Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
Status: 7%

Where ash falls from the sky, and mist dominates the night, evil cloaks the land and stifles all life. Criminal mastermind Kelsier teaches Allomancy, the magic of metals, to another Mistborn, urchin Vin 16. The unlikely heroine is distracted by rich Venture heir Elend. Can Kelsier’s thieving crew take on the tyrant Lord Ruler and bring back colour to their world?

My husband has been trying to get me to read this book for yeeeears. It’s basically his mission in life at this point, and who am I to take that away from him? Except … I sort of am now? Don’t worry, there’ll be other books. Our 11th anniversary is actually on July 11, so I figured it’d be a good present to him for me to finally read the thing. I had originally started it before and didn’t get very far because I just wasn’t in the mood for it, but I’m enjoying it so far.

Sorcery of Thorns

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
Status: pg 100/453

All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery—magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power.

Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire. Elisabeth’s desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital. With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them.

As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught—about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself. For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined.

This is a buddy read with Keri @ Are You My Book, and I absolutely love it so far. The book’s a little darker than I thought going in, which is obviously a plus for me. Yes, please. All the dark fantasy! Elisabeth is a fantastic character so far. There’s something mysterious about her, but also it makes total sense as a bookwyrm, because who wouldn’t want to live in a giant library where books have personalities of their own, sometimes dangerous ones, and there’s so many hidden passageways and such. Sounds like a dream to me. I’m also more than a little in love with Nathanial, and I can’t help but picturing Silas as Sebastian from Black Butler. So far, I just can’t wait to read more of this, and I’m loving it!

I have so many ongoing reads right now that I’m not sure I’ll be able to really get to many upcoming reads, so I’m actually going to pare this section down a bit to just my upcoming blog tour reads.

The first is Knightmare Arcanist, which looks and sounds absolutely fantastic and I can’t wait to pick it up. I’ve heard such wonderful things about this series already, and I think it’s going to be one I’ll really like!

The other upcoming tour is The Ship of Shadows, which is about a group of ruthless female pirates, and this sounds absolutely perfect for me. I’m looking forward to this one, and I’ve had a string of great MG reads lately.

  1. I think I love your three Ws most 🙂
I really need to start on my copy of Sorcery of Thorns. There’s just so many books on my TBR I don’t know when I’ll get to it. I hope you’re loving it!

    Happy reading xo

    • Ha, thanks! I have more fun than I probably should creating them. xD

I know that feeling. Honestly, the only reason I picked it up now is because Keri was going to read it soon, so I thought a buddy read would be fun. If not for her, it probably would’ve sat on my shelf for who knows how long. xD

  2. I loved Knightmare Arcanist (even went on to read and finish #2). I hope you enjoy it! And I’ve heard lots of good things about The Ship of Shadows. Happy reading!

    • I’m so glad to hear that! I’ve heard many people saying that, and I should be starting it tomorrow probably and I’m so excited. 😀 Sounds like a series I’m going to love.

    • Jackson Ford’s series is just *chef’s kiss*. Especially if you love reluctant heroes and sarcastic protagonists.

  3. I haven’t read Mistborn yet but it’s definitely on my list and I keep eyeing it up on my shelves! I hope you continue to enjoy Sorcery of Thorns – I thought it was such a fun YA fantasy standalone!

    • I feel that way about most of Sanderson’s books. I’ve read a few, but hubby has pretty much all his books, and it takes up A LOT of shelf space, and dang it’s intimidating. xD

I’m definitely loving it so far, and I’m a little in love with Silas and also a little heartbroken and afraid to finish this thing now haha.

  4. I’ve been thinking about reading A Sorcery of Thorns for a while now. Dark fantasy is a plus for me too, so I’m curious to see what you think of it once you’re done reading (hopefully still good!)

    • I’m about 2/3 of the way through and it’s SO GOOD so far. Suffers a little from a protagonist who’s “not like other people” and a little too good at everything, but I don’t even care, I’m still into it lol

    • Thanks! I’m still not very far into it (oops), but I’m definitely enjoying it more this time than when I picked it up before and just wasn’t in the mood. xD

  5. Okay, first of all, where have I been? Your site looks so different and I love it! I’m so jealous….every time I try to change mine it looks like a muddy mess.

Second, I love that you have stuff technically on your currently reading that don’t belong on your WWW because I think I have 18 in play right now. This is mood reading, pandemic style over here.

Finally, I’m pretty sure I need a copy of the first Frost Files book. The ol’ self control is waning…..

    Have an amazing week!

    • Clearly, we fell into a time warp. not your fault. I’m not sure what happened to the past couple of months, either. xD I’m glad you like it, though! I was such a nervous wreck, and there are still things that irk me about it, but it turned out a lot better than I expected it to. 😀

Ah man, 18? That’s professional level mood reading. I’m not *quite* there just yet. I normally never have more than three at a time, and rarely more than two, but I got up to SIX books at a time this month because mood reading and I don’t know what to make of that lol.

You doooo. Do iiiiit! The Frost Files is soooo good, and I just finished book two, and it’s *chef’s kiss*

  6. Yikes… as a Californian, I’m not sure if I’d be up for reading Random Sh*t Flying Through The Air right now. 2020 is bad enough without major earthquakes, too. Still, I do want to read the first one, so I guess I might get to this book eventually?

Also, Sorcery of Thorns sounds like a great read. I’ll have to make sure that one stays on my radar until I get to reading it.

    • Yeeeah, you may not want to read it if you’re a Californian right now. I mean, on the one hand … at least there’s no earthquakes now, right? Something to be thankful for? On the other, this book was a real downer. Really good, but yeah.

It’s been good so far! It’s a really unique world that I’m kind of mad I don’t currently live in. Give me murder books over a virus any day.

  7. I loved Sorcery of Thorns!! It’s such a great book and I loved that it was a stand-a-lone! Good luck with Mistborn!! Hopefully, we both finish it this month!! 🙂 I told my husband that I would probably read it more if I had the pretty UK covers. He was like.. no.. you have the trilogy. I did get it from Bookoutlet, two years ago, for like 8 bucks! They are just not as pretty!! haha

    • I’m really enjoying it, too, and I’m almost done! I’m not sure I want it to end. xD

Aww, man. Shucks that it didn’t work. I didn’t think to try that. The UK covers are so much nicer, though. We’ve got the mass market paperback, and it’s not only got a blah cover, but it’s hard for me to read, so I will give it to hubby that he at least got me the Kindle version. xD
