If we’re all honest, lost in a book is probably where we’d rather be instead of … wherever it is we are.
So I was particularly looking forward to this box, even though Minion just wanted a box and cared not at all for the theme. I actually had no guesses as to what book it would be, but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s one I actually have an ARC of, and the cover is so pretty in person, so that worked out nicely. Now Minion will have a chance to read it, too.
Minion and I were both super impressed with what was in this box! It ended up being even more of a hit than lost box, because one of the items was actually something Minion had said she was really hoping to get, based on the pictures of previous boxes.
No more teasing, though. Let’s get to the unboxing!
July’s theme: Lost in a Book
The activity in this booklet in the Creativity Corner is a bookish quiz, which I aced (of course) and Minion … muddled through. She’s not a big reader, and what she does read isn’t the classics (which she doesn’t enjoy), so it’s not that surprising. This was a bit of a miss for her, but she honestly doesn’t care much about the booklet anyway. *I* read the booklet at least lol.
The very first thing Minion pulled out was this mug inspired by Matilda. It says “These books gave Matilda a hopeful & comforting message: you are not alone.” Minion has never read Matilda, but she loves the movie, and she was really hoping to get a mug in one of the three boxes we got her, so she was thrilled! This is by far her favorite item from this box.
Minion’s Thoughts: It’s cute and pretty and I liked it, because I wanted a mug!
The small items in this were a sticker, a bookmark, and a pin. The bookmark was Minion’s favorite, because she’s a bookmark fiend and loves to collect them. This one is inspired by Belle from Beauty and the Beast and it says, “Far off places, daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise!”
The enamel pin is a book with a fantasy map, and it’s super cute. Minion doesn’t really use or collect pins, but she’s added it to her shelf, and it’s really quite pretty.
The sticker was designed by Samantha Curcio, and is super cute! Minion loved the fact that there’s a unicorn on there, of course. That’s all it takes to get her these days. She refuses to use it … because then it would be used. Duh. So it’s gone in one of the other things she got in this box …
Minion’s Thoughts: I like the pin because it says “lost in a book,” and sometimes I do get lost in a book. (Unfortunately, she seems to have a habit of finding her way back, so she clearly didn’t inherit my lack of direction). I like the bookmark because it’s cute, and I like Beauty and the Beast a little bit.
Which leads us into this gorgeous Harry Potter themed book tin! Minion couldn’t open it at first, and it took me some fiddling before being able to open it. Minion isn’t really into Harry Potter (I know, I know … she’s young, maybe she’ll grow out of it). I, however, LOVED this. The front is soooo gorgeous, and when you open it up, there’s another beautiful picture inside. I couldn’t convince her to give it to me. She’s hidden it now, just in case I get ideas. xD
Minion’s Thoughts: I like the book tin because it says, “When in doubt, go to the library,” because I could bring it to the library with me and read there. I can also keep my bookmarks in it.
This was another big hit! Minion loves coloring, and this month came with a coloring book! The images inside are super cute bookish scenes, things with just enough detail to hold an older middle grade reader’s interest, but not so much detail that it’ll be too difficult or challenging. I suspect she’ll probably hang these around her room when she’s finished coloring them, and they deserve the spots. They’re very cute and will look great colored.
Minion’s Thoughts: I like it because I like to color and do dot-to-dots. I liked the pictures that are in it.
And what’s a coloring book without something to color it? Granted, Minion didn’t need more colored pencils, but what kid isn’t excited to get more coloring implements? My favorite part were the clever, bookish names for the colors! It was a really nice touch and was a lot of fun to read through.
Minion’s Thoughts: I like them because when I go places, I can bring these and the coloring book with me and color. I like all the fairy tales in the names, too.
This month’s book was …
The Time of Green Magic by Hilary McKay
Minion’s Thoughts: I’m interested in the book because I like magic, but I’ve never heard of green magic. I want to know what mysterious things start happening in the house and what a spotted cat-thing is.
August’s OwlCrate Junior Theme is …
Me: Any guesses about next month’s box?
Minion: An enchanted book?
Me: The kind that growls at you when you read it?
Minion: Maybe. Unless you’re its owner, it growls. Oh, and maybe an enchanted pen!
Wow, there was a ton of stuff in this box! I love that she immediately decided to use the book tin for her bookmarks. I mean, why would you put a book in a book tin?🤣

Right? I was surprised by how much was in this box! To be fair, the book tin is too small to hold an actual book. I don’t know the proper use for book tins, except that it’s too small even for some of her bookmarks lol.
omg Minion is literally your Mini-Me and I love it so much! I’m so glad that she got to do this unboxing with you and give her thoughts <3 Are you gonna keep Owlcrate Jr so we can see your reactions every month? I loved this!

She iiis, the poor thing. xD Unfortunately, it’s kinda pricey, so we’ve got it for one more month to cover until she goes back to school, and then we probably won’t do it again except maybe on special occasions. Think my director will give me a pay raise so I can afford regular book boxes? xD If I work in a library, that’s work-related expenses, right?! LOL.
That’s so cute! I have a dedicated box for my bookmarks, too. (I have a LOT of bookmarks.) But mine is a bit longer and narrower than the book tin, so it works better for me. Still, the tin looks really pretty! I love the pin, especially that it has a map. That just seems perfect.

I don’t have so many physical bookmarks anymore (I fell in love with magnetic and never looked back), but I totally had one when I was younger, too. Before magnetic bookmarks were a thing haha. Mine was longer, too, and we’ve found that most of her bookmarks don’t fit in this tin, so we’ll probably find something else to use it for and get her something else for her bookmarks (since she’s sold on the idea now lol).
What a great box–so many cool things. I loooove that mug!

Me, too! It’s so pretty. Definitely Minion’s favorite thing from the box.
