It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.
Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.
“I don’t have to like it,” Tavin said coldly. “It still won’t harm me.”
“How sure are you?” Rhusana gave the lamp another swirl, and oil splashed up near to the brim. “What if it’s not just the flame? What if it’s oil boiling on your skin? Will you burn then?”
As the new chieftain of the Crows, Fie knows better than to expect a royal to keep his word. Still she’s hopeful that Prince Jasimir will fulfill his oath to protect her fellow Crows. But then black smoke fills the sky, signaling the death of King Surimir and the beginning of Queen Rhusana’s merciless bid for the throne.
With the witch queen using the deadly plague to unite the nation of Sabor against Crows—and add numbers to her monstrous army—Fie and her band are forced to go into hiding, leaving the country to be ravaged by the plague. However, they’re all running out of time before the Crows starve in exile and Sabor is lost forever.
A desperate Fie calls on old allies to help take Rhusana down from within her own walls. But inside the royal palace, the only difference between a conqueror and a thief is an army. To survive, Fie must unravel not only Rhusana’s plot, but ancient secrets of the Crows—secrets that could save her people, or set the world ablaze.
✿ The opening mirrors the opening for the first book.
✿ Which means you know good stuff is bound to follow.
✿ Even more betrayal and twists and backstabbing!
✿ Also just normal stabbing, because the classics are fun, too.
✿ Some interesting discussion about gods and rebirth.
✿ Trust. No. One.
✿ Spoiler alert: Barf, the cat with an attitude, is still in this one.
✿ Let’s be honest, Barf is the real hero of this story.
This is a weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next Monday’s prompt is: ensemble cast.
I actually love these books, so this feels a little too easy. I actually have to work to narrow it down just to five. I’m a contradictory sort of reader, because while I complain about there being so many characters in a lot of books, I also love me some ensemble casts. So this works out just fine.
I’ve been hearing such wonderful things about Seven Devils, and I’m dying to read it, but I first have to figure out how I’m going to get my hands on it. I’m technically on the wait list at my library for this right now, but ugh, it takes forever. I have no chill, guys.
Just in time for the sequel to come out, I was finally able to get my hands on There Will Come A Darkness, and I’m so excited to have the chance to read it finally! Also, the cover is so gorgeous in person. The ensemble in this book includes a ruthless killer and a reckless gambler, so yes, these seem like my type of people.
Next on my list of buddy reads appears to be The Gilded Wolves, in preparation for the sequel. I had so much fun with my buddy read of Sorcery of Thorns that I’m diving right back into it with Keri @ Are You My Book, even though we’re both so bad with the communication thing. We’re clearly a good match haha.
Another one that I’ve heard a lot about but am stuck now on a waiting list for is The Good For Nothings, which sounds absolutely fantastic and I so need it in my life, sooner rather than later. I’m getting all the Guardians of the Galaxy vibes from it (which I’m sure is intentional), but I loved the dynamic of that group so much that I’m obviously going to give this one a try.
I’m actually not sure what’s taken me so long to read Deck of Omens, but I definitely still want to read it. I enjoyed The Devouring Gray, and I want to see how things turn out for these teenagers.
Nice first lines! The five books you mentioned on your TBR list look interesting, too.

Thanks! Hope you’re able to check them out. 🙂
There Will Come a Darkness… also because you live in my head rent free. Consider this rent.

Not my usual read, but the blurb and excerpts pulled me in. Thanks for sharing, and here’s mine: “CLEO MCDOUGAL REGRETS NOTHING”

I have an eARC of Seven Devils but boy I’m having a tough time getting to all my August books😬 I do love fantastic ensembles though, so I should make it a priority!

“Fond of fire” that is a strange thing to ask. Isn’t it? My book is called WEATHER
It definitely makes more sense if you read the first one, since one of the classes is immune to fire. 🙂
I’m really looking forward to trying Seven Devils and The Good for Nothings. Thanks for sharing!

Saaaame. I can’t wait to get my hands on both of them. 😀
Happy Friday! 😀
Today on my blog I’m sharing from As Easy as Cherry Pie by Bell Renshaw. I’m just getting to chapter 3, so I’ll share a line from there.
“Maggie flipped on the fluorescent lights in the shop’s kitchen and stifled a yawn.”
Have an excellent weekend! 🙂❤📚

It’s a really powerful first line, isn’t it?! That’s what grabbed my attention about the first book, because it’s so shocking, but when you keep reading, it makes sense in the world and it’s not what you think.
