August Book Haul || Say Hello to my Little Friends

TBR Status: Unnecessary books weeded and sustainable growth achieved. Allegedly.

I actually … may not have gone completely overboard on books in August? Wow, that feels weird to say. Have we fallen into an alternate reality or something?

I mean, I’m not going to say I did great at the whole “not acquiring a ton of new books” thing, but compared to last month? It’s trending in the right direction, at least! And actually, a lot of the eARCs I got this month are for next year, so I’m not completely overloading the end of this year. I’m just … getting a jump on overloading myself in 2021. Talk about overachieving!

Physical Haul

So much thanks to Tor for a finished copy of Memory of Souls. I’ve been wanting to read this series for a while now, and I’m so glad I finally did. Y’all, this is the epic fantasy series, okay? I love it. And if you need more convincing than that, stay tuned for my TTT tomorrow. 😉

Kindle Haul

Sky Song     Fangirl Vol. 1     Amari and the Night Brothers     The Inheritance Games     Karma Moon--Ghost Hunter

Sky Song: I’ve been meaning to read an Abi Elphinstone book forever now, since they’ve come so highly recommended by so many bloggers. So when I saw this pop up on NetGalley? Yup, I clicked the button fast enough to make your head spin and then squeed when I got the acceptance notification! As a way to extra bribe me to make sure I read it sooner rather than later, it’s going to be a buddy read with Mari @ Tirilu.

Fangirl Vol 1.: I keep saying I’m going to read Carry On, but I haven’t yet. I haven’t read Fangirl, either. But when I saw this, I figured like it was the best of both worlds and a fine place to jump into the world. I’m also really digging this push to make graphic novels out of existing novels lately.

Amari and the Night Brothers: I’m already calling it. Other than the third Tristan Strong book, this will probably be one of my most anticipated books of 2021. Do you see that cover? Have you read that blurb? Because there’s so much yes packed into both of those that I can’t even.

The Inheritance Games: I’ve been informed this has a very similar feel to Knives Out, which I really enjoyed (except for the ending), and I’ve been a little derelict in my thriller/mystery reading lately, so this’ll be a nice foray back into that! I’ve also seen early reviews from bloggers saying it’s really good, so I can’t wait to dive in!

Karma Moon–Ghost Hunter: Speaking of fall reads … we have this! Which I requested on a whim and have no regrets, because it’s fall and I will forever be in the mood for ghost stories. I love stories about haunted buildings, and a haunted hotel sounds fun. Add to that the docuseries plot and the fact that Karma Moon believes in exactly none of it, and this sounds like a fun fall read!

Bloodsworn     A Universe of Wishes     Shadow City     Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses     Root Magic

Bloodsworn: Not gonna lie … I don’t actually remember requesting this? So it was like a second Christmas when I got an approval notification. I haven’t read Ashlords yet, but I’ve informed my husband that it’s the one thing I really want for my birthday at the end of this month. 😉 Also, I thought I loved the fire horse on the front of Ashlords, but no, I take it back. Lightning horse is where it’s at.

A Universe of Wishes: I’m not usually a big anthology reader, but listen … there are so many authors in this anthology whose work I love that I couldn’t not pick it up: Victoria Schwab, Kwame Mbalia, Tochi Onyebuchi, Rebecca Roanhorse … the list just goes on and on.

Shadow City: I got a widget for this and immediately jumped on it! The sequel to Diamond City. It’s been a little while since I read a heist book, but I’ve found I really like the trope, and since I enjoyed the first one, I’ll be looking forward to whatever the characters are up to in this one. All I know is it involves Aina and Kohl possibly having to work together, and I am 100% for this dynamic.

Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses: I keep saying I want more books relating to chronic illness or more chronically ill characters, so when this book fell into my lap, of course I had to request it! The fact that it’s comped to Teen Wolf certainly doesn’t hurt, either. This feels like a fun, funny, but probably heartwarming twist on chronic illness, and I’m not sure my poor heart is ready for it, but it sounds like a fun read either way.

Root Magic: Historical ghost story about two little Black kids in the South during integration. I’m not sure what part of this I shouldn’t love. Black girl magic gets me every time.

The Bright and the Pale     Cathedral of Bones     Magic Dark and Strange     Legendborn

The Bright and The Pale: To words: Thieves. Guild. The main character is literally leading a group of “cutthroats and thieves.” Obviously, this screams, READ ME, WENCH. And who am I not to comply? I’m also a fan of sinister things slumbering … and alliteration. This blurb is just killing it.

Cathedral of Bones: If that title alone doesn’t give you all the reasons you need to read this … I’m not sure I can help you. But lucky for you, there’s also a fabulous blurb that goes with it! You know, the one that talks about how Animists can call upon monsters like imps and wraiths. Gonna be a definite yes from me on this one.

Magic Dark and Strange: It’s comped to The Bone Witch and Sherlock Holmes, which is already a winner right there. Also, I’m always here for a bit of necromancy. I like the unique twist on this, though, where it’s a positive thing.

Legendborn: Southern black girl magic! Like I said, I will always show up for this. But also … flying demons?! Magic societies?! Heck yes!

  1. I’m so looking forward reading Skysong with you! I can’t wait! I mean, obviously I can, since I still have to read Dragon Mountan and also The Poition Diaries. And the first section of your BOTM but still! It’s gonna be great!

Also, what genre is Cathedral of Bones? It sounds amazing and I love the cover. All the points if it’s a Middlegrade too.

    • Bwahaha, yes, wait a little while, but still excited, nonetheless. xD

It’s totally middle grade! There have been so many good middle grade books coming up.

  2. A few on here really strike my fancy! I’ve been looking to try out a few middle grades, I feel like they would be fresh, quick reads in between chunker books!

    • They definitely are, and that’s what I love using them for, too! Sometimes I get a little burned out reading a bunch of books that are 500+ pages or with heavy themes, so it’s nice to slip a little MG in there that’s just fun or funny. :3
