I’m not even sure how to introduce this month’s box, except to say that it scratched a spooky itch for both myself and Minion, and I’m super excited about it!
Minion is a teensy bit indifferent, but that’s mostly how she lives her life at this point when it comes to bookish things. What can I say? She’s weird. Still, as soon as I told her what the book was actually about and that it was supposed to be scary, she wanted to read it as soon as she finishes the one she’s working on now.
September’s Theme: Shivers Down Your Spine
As you might expect for a box leading up to the glory that is October and Halloween, this featured a lot of spooky goodies. I actually love this time of year, because first, it’s cooling off to a slightly more tolerable temperature. But second, it’s a totally normal time to scare the bejesus out of yourself and nobody blinks twice or judges you about it. How cool is that?!
The booklet that came with this month had some cute details about some scary creatures from around the world. Most of them were pretty negative and evil, but to prove that not all scary-looking things have to be mean, they added the Issitoq, which looks absolutely creepy but is actually a helpful spirit! I enjoyed reading through them, as the only one I’d heard of was the Eloko.
The activity for this month was a crossword puzzle!
Minion: Oooh, a crossword puzzle! I like doing these.
Me: Did you know you have to read the book in order to do the puzzle?
Minion: … why?
Me: The clues are based on the book.
Minion: *gasps and clutches pearls* (okay, that last part might have just been in my head)
This box came with a delightfully creepy tote bag! No books were harmed in the making of this, I assume, despite what the picture might imply. Pro tip: We also don’t recommend attempting to eat books, good or otherwise.
Minion’s Thoughts: I liked this, because I can bring it trick or treating for an extra bag if mine gets full. If we have trick or treating this year. Or next year.
Me: … you know it’s supposed to be for books, right?
Minion: Yeeeah, I don’t really care.
Three words: JACK. FREAKING. SKELLINGTON. Ahhhhhhh!
Okay, so, Minion’s excitement over this one totally didn’t match mine. In an unprecedented act of generosity, she attempted to give me the Jack Skellington figure (being the big Nightmare Before Christmas fan I am) before realizing it actually goes with the game. So I suppose we’ll just have to settle for playing the game together. And I’ll steal the figuring while she’s not look but shhh.
Minion’s Thoughts: I like the card game, because I kind of like the figurine, and I kind of like playing card games.
Me: What about the washi tape?
Minion: I like it. It’s cute, but I don’t really have anything to use washi tape for. I could use it as tape to decorate for Halloween, though.
Me: Oooor we could get you a bullet journal?
Minion: …
This month’s book was …
The Girl and the Ghost by Hanna Alkaf
Frightlopedia by Julie Winterbottom
The Girl and the Ghost has been on my TBR for a while, so I’m super excited that it was in the box, because I totally plan on stealing it to read it! Can’t wait. Frightlopedia looks super cute, too, and I think I’ll read it before Halloween to help get in that spooky mood.
Minion’s Thoughts: I think The Girl and the Ghost is cute, and I think it’s cool that a ghost and a girl are friends.
Me: What about Frightlopedia?
Minion: Ummm … what’s it about?
Me: *opens the book to find arachnids first*
Minion: *screams and runs away*
Me: What’d you think of this box?
Minion: I thought it was all cute. My favorite thing was The Girl and the Ghost.
Me: Mine was obviously the Jack Skellington game.
Minion: Because you’re weird.
October’s OwlCrate Junior Theme is …
Me: So what do you think will be in the next box? The theme is Epic Quests.
Minion: People going on adventures! … I want it to be unicorns, though.
Me: You want everything to be unicorns. What kind of adventures?
Minion: Like people going around the world exploring.
Me: There’s a squirrel and woods. Maybe a forest adventure?
Minion: Maybe they’ll be exploring a forest and find a squirrel that will be their friend.
Me: What would you name a squirrel if you found one to be your friend?
Minion: I dunno. Sally?
This is so cute! I hope Minion (and you) enjoy the books! I’ve heard great things about The Girl and the Ghost.
(Also, I love that Minion has her own logo on your blog now. Love the unicorn!)

Thank you! I’m excited to read it. Probably more excited than she is. But still. xD
(Hehe I made it, but she picked everything out and designed it herself. I was impressed.)
