WWW Wednesday (September 30, 2020)

It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
What if you were the only one who could see ghosts?
Would you befriend them?
Would you help them cross over?

Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

Today’s a special WWW, because today’s my birthday! Woot woot! I’m officially 30 today. *throws confetti* So if there’s weird mistakes in this post, forgive me. I received Re-Reckoning as an early gift yesterday and obviously totally rushed to write this so I could play it. xD Priorities.

The Inheritance Games     The Gilded Wolves     Tristan Strong Destroys the World

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
★★★☆ || Goodreads
If you’ve watched Knives Out, you’ve already got a good idea of the vibe of this. Rich family. Inheritance left to some rando. Much mad. I’d call this one a Knives Out for a YA audience, since it’s not as violent (no murder mystery, just a general mystery). Avery is a fun protagonist. She seems like any teen who suddenly found herself thrust into wealth, with the added benefit of being on point with her sarcasm. And the Hawthorne boys? *chef’s kiss* While they’re all siblings, they’re all very different personality-wise, but there’s something to love about all of them. The mystery was a fun one, even though I didn’t always understand the riddles in the book. Kept me guessing to the very ending, and then the ending guaranteed that I need to read the next book! Phew. What a note to leave off on.

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi
★★★★ || Goodreads
If you haven’t read this one yet … READ IT. Oh my gosh. Why did it take me so long?! This book was fan-freaking-tastic. I absolutely love all the characters. ALL OF THEM! The squad vibes are SO FREAKING STRONG. I felt like I was being pulled into an established team and invited along on this heist quest, and it was just fabulous. As always, I love Roshani Chokshi’s writing. At the beginning, it was a little hard to get into sometimes, because it was really heavy on the descriptions, but once the heist started, this sort of fell away to a more bearable level of descriptions and exposition. I may have screamed just a little at the ending. Or a lot. You know, it’s kind of subjective. I just absolutely can’t wait to pick up the sequel now, though!

Tristan Strong Destroys the World by Kwame Mbalia
★★★★ || Goodreads
This. Yes. This. I just … words. Words are hard. I didn’t realize just how much I missed Gum Baby until she finally appeared in this book (a ways in) and then everything felt right in the world. You know, even though Alke was in trouble. Again. These kids. Where the first book really tackled grief, this book tackles trauma, which is an important, albeit slightly different, emotional group. Everyone in Alke, including Tristan, suffered some pretty major trauma, and of course, no one should expect that just to magically go away just because Tristan saved the day. In fact, that’s not the case, and I absolutely loved that this book didn’t just leave it at “they all live happily ever after,” but rather, Mbalia tackles the aftermath.

At this point, Mistborn has kind of just … ceased to exist. I WILL GET BACK TO IT. I promise. Eventually. Ugh. Hubby might just smother me in my sleep at this point. xD

The Black Sky

The Black Sky by Timothy D. Minneci
Status: pg 44/306

Set in a dangerous post-apocalyptic, near-future Manhattan, THE BLACK SKY tells the gripping story of a group of survivors, some living in a lawless wasteland, others safely inside a walled city, caught in the ticking clock adventure of an extraordinary mission to save one man, unlock the truth of humanity’s near extinction, and risk it all to save the ones they love – a thrilling debut novel that illuminates the power of family, survival against all odds, and hope in dark times.

This book caught my attention pretty early on, because it’s both post-apocalyptic and set in my home state! I don’t feel like I’m very far into it yet, even though I guess I kind of am? It’s still pretty early on. The beginning’s been a little slow as the world and characters are set up, but Bishop has officially started his quest now, so it seems like it’s about to pick up pace. I don’t really know the characters too well yet, but I enjoy Bishop and his wife Tessa already. They seem like survivors and doers, which is always a fun thing in characters in a post-apocalyptic world. I’ll hopefully be able to dig deeper into this book this week!

City of Ghosts

City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab
Status: pg 30/285

Cassidy Blake’s parents are The Inspecters, a (somewhat inept) ghost-hunting team. But Cass herself can REALLY see ghosts. In fact, her best friend, Jacob, just happens to be one.

When The Inspecters head to ultra-haunted Edinburgh, Scotland, for their new TV show, Cass—and Jacob—come along. In Scotland, Cass is surrounded by ghosts, not all of them friendly. Then she meets Lara, a girl who can also see the dead. But Lara tells Cassidy that as an In-betweener, their job is to send ghosts permanently beyond the Veil. Cass isn’t sure about her new mission, but she does know the sinister Red Raven haunting the city doesn’t belong in her world. Cassidy’s powers will draw her into an epic fight that stretches through the worlds of the living and the dead, in order to save herself.

I actually just started this one, so I’m not too terribly far into it, but I AM IN LOVE. Is this any surprise, given that it’s a Schwab book? I think not. But oh my gosh, the opening so far has been absolutely perfect and I don’t even know what to say. I’ve got this and the sequel, thankfully, and expect I’ll probably tear through both of them. And then subsequently be sad not to have more, like you do.

This is a buddy read with Mari @ Tirilu. Again. At this point, she is single-handedly attempting to force me to read all the great middle grade reads that I’m behind on, or so it seems.

    The Poppy War     The Secret Life of Sam     The Last Halloween, Book 1     No Place For Monsters

Okay, wow, I did a really bad job getting to last week’s books, didn’t I? xD I sort of just … read whatever I wanted instead. See? This is why I don’t do TBRs, guys.

I’ve actually sort of started The Poppy War, but I didn’t get far enough into it to really write anything about it (just one chapter), so I didn’t want to put it on currently reading yet. I’m hoping to be able to dig in more soon, though.

I guess everything is more or less the way it was last week? I still want to get to The Last Halloween, Book 1: Children and No Place For Monsters this week. The only problem with them is that I need to read them on the computer, which is kind of a pain in the butt. It’s not a huge deal, but I don’t often get large swaths of time to read in front of my computer, because I’m usually doing something else when I finally sit down at it.

I also want to squeeze in The Secret Life of Sam still. Because yes. It sounds adorable. Emotional, but adorable. I’ve just been lazy lately, especially on the blogging front, but I’m trying to get my butt in gear on the reading thing at least.

    • Thank you! I’ll actually be starting The Silvered Serpent this week, and I’m so excited! I’m ready for it. Well … sort of. My emotions sort of hurt still haha.

    • I’m aaaalmost done with City of Ghosts, because I stayed up ridiculously late last night because I couldn’t put it down. xD I can see why everyone likes the series so dang much!

  1. Just admit that your life is definitely better since I’ve introduced you to these books! Admit it! I won’t apologise!

    I seriously love those books. I have kinda trouble getting into other books of Schwab but the Cassidy Blake books I love. I mean, Jacob. And Ghosts. And the Veil. And the atmosphere. The book is currently sitting in my bag, silently calling out to me while I’m at my desk at the office. I’ve already read it but I can’t wait to continue.

    • Oh, there’s no doubt that my life is better since you’ve thrown all the MG books at me. 😉

      ugh. yes. All of that. I love it. Our jobs should totally let us read during downtime. I feel like that’s fair.

    • Yeeeah, that’s definitely fair. I know a lot of people are shying away from dark books right now, and that’s understandable lol.
