First Line Friday 56 || Journey Through the Veil

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

People think that ghosts only come out at night, or on Halloween, when the world is dark and the walls are thin. But the truth is, ghosts are everywhere. In the bread aisle at your grocery store, in the middle of your grandmother’s garden, in the front seat on your bus.

Just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

Mirrors are honest,” says Lara. “They show you as you are. For a ghost, a mirror forces them to face the truth.”

“And what’s the truth?”

Lara looks at me. She has eyes like stones. Heavy.

“The truth,” she says, “is that they’re dead. They’re gone.” She sits back. “In that sense, we’re like mirrors, too.”

City of Ghosts

They’re here.
They’re watching.

Cass can pull back the Veil that separates the living from the dead.

When Cass’s parents start hosting a TV show about the world’s most haunted places, the family heads off to Edinburgh. Here, graveyards, castles and secret passageways teem with restless phantoms.

But when Cass meets a girl who shares her “gift”, she realizes how much she still has to learn about the Veil—and herself. And she’ll have to learn fast. The city of ghosts is more dangerous than she ever imagined.

This is a weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next Monday’s prompt is: magic.

Since pretty much 85% of my TBR fits into this category of book, this was probably the easiest 5 On My TBR I’ve done. All the books filled with lots of magic! Preferably the dark kind.

Flash Fire     The Unbroken     Broken Web     Amari and the Night Brothers     Dragonslayer

I know this is a ways out still, but … loookie! Sequel to The Extraordinaries. It’s never too soon to start getting excited about a good book, is it? I’m looking forward to Flash Fire and have no idea what to expect except normal superhero magic.

Listen. Assassinations and massacres will get me every time. The fact that Touraine sounds like a total bad-ass is just the cherry on top for why I want to read The Unbroken. The series is even called Magic of the Lost, so I feel like I should get bonus points for that.

Another sequel! I suppose it shouldn’t be a total surprise that I’m looking forward to a lot of sequels. Do you see how freaking fierce the women look on the cover of Broken Web? Pretty sure I need this book ASAP.

I fell in love with the idea of Amari and the Night Brothers from the moment I saw the cover. It’s fierce. It’s magical. It sounds like almost everything I want in a book. Can’t wait to dive into this magical world!

And what’s magic without DRAGONS?! Pointless, I tell you. So I wanted to round out the list with a dragon book, and Dragonslayer not only fit the bill but also happened to have it right there in the name. “Lost magic, unlikely heroes, and reawakened dragons” should basically just be the tagline for my life. Definitely need to try this series.

    • I hope you get the chance to! I’ve thrown the Tristan Strong books at so many people, and they’ve all liked them so far, so that’s a pretty good track record!

    • Yes! I didn’t think it was too bad at all. Had a couple really creepy scenes, but maybe a more middle tier middle grade creep factor.

  1. City of Ghosts sounds really good! My daughter and I have been reading a ghost series, but probably not as good as this one. LOL At least in my opinion. My daughter might disagree. Dragonslayer! That’s a new one to me, but I love the sound of it. I hope you have a great weekend! I’m so glad it’s finally here. It’s been such an exhausting week.
