It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
What would you do if you could see ghosts?
Would you cross the veil?
Would you set them free?
Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

The Darkdeep by Ally Condie and Brendan Reichs
★★★★☆ || Goodreads
This was a really fun read! It’s actually not too dark, despite the name, and I’d put it at a more middle-of-the-road scary as far as middle grade books go. The character growth is fantastic, and I liked the depth and conflict between the characters. I felt like it took a little while for it to ramp up, though, and the beginning was really heavy on teen drama rather than moving into the plot. Once the plot got going, though, I was caught up in it! I didn’t feel like the ending really explained things, but it’s book one of a series, so I didn’t expect it to, either, and I’m definitely feeling like I need to check out the rest of the series!
The Puppetmaster’s Apprentice by Lisa DeSalm (review will be posted 11/15)
★★★★☆ || Goodreads
I didn’t know I needed a Pinocchio retelling in my life until I read this thing! It was fabulous! The writing’s gorgeous, and watching the little found family work together was brilliant! The main character’s arc is lovely, too. My biggest complaint was that the “twist” was so painfully obvious from the very start that it annoyed me no one in the book saw it coming or even suspected it.
I have had the worst time picking up a book and actually sitting down and sticking with it. There’s been so much going on in my life right now that I’ve been a little all over the map, more so than usual. So I’m still technically reading The Poppy War, and I’m about 30% in. Jiang is a darn treasure, and I absolutely love him so far. I don’t really have a lot to say about it, other than I’m plugging away at it slowly but surely.
Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark
Status: 28%
D. W. Griffith is a sorcerer, and The Birth of a Nation is a spell that drew upon the darkest thoughts and wishes from the heart of America. Now, rising in power and prominence, the Klan has a plot to unleash Hell on Earth.
Luckily, Maryse Boudreaux has a magic sword and a head full of tales. When she’s not running bootleg whiskey through Prohibition Georgia, she’s fighting monsters she calls “Ku Kluxes.” She’s damn good at it, too. But to confront this ongoing evil, she must journey between worlds to face nightmares made flesh–and her own demons. Together with a foul-mouthed sharpshooter and a Harlem Hellfighter, Maryse sets out to save a world from the hate that would consume it.
I’m gonna go ahead and admit, right off the bat, that this one was not what I’d been expecting. I’m not sure exactly what I expected, but I obviously didn’t look at the genre tags on Goodreads, because I didn’t know it was horror! I’m not complaining, since this is a good time of year for it. I love Clark’s twist on the Klan, where Ku Kluxes are monsters that take over people who are consumed by hate, basically.
The characters are so vivid and full of personality! It’s definitely a dystopia-feeling world, especially if you’re black. The racism is enough to make your blood boil, but it’s accurate, at least. There’s so many little things Clark adds in about the culture, though, like Briar Rabbit and Briar Fox and the legend that Africans once had wings. The world has been so vivid so far, which makes all the horror elements all the more disturbing. It’s been a pretty quick read so far, and not what I expected, but I’m definitely enjoying it!
Oh look, I did so poorly with my reading last week that I still have aaaaall my upcoming reads from last week and then some. xD Pretty sure I’m not doing this “reading” thing right.
I’m planning on starting Plain Bad Heroines as a read on my phone this week, which is something I can do during breaks at work for convenience. When I finish my current read (which is my Kindle read), I’ll be picking up The Silvered Serpents on my Kindle, too, and I’m looking forward to it! I want to get back with these characters ASAP.
Since I’m obviously a horrible buddy reader, Mari @ Tirilu has already started Tunnel of Bones, and I’ve read … one chapter. Not even enough yet to actually qualify being on my “currently reading” list. I haven’t been having a lot of opportunity to read physical books, so that’s why this one’s suffered a bit.
I would cross the veil definitely. Not sure about setting them free. 😁 The Puppetmaster’s apprentice looks so cool! Going to have to check that one out. And yeah, it’s hard to find time to read physical books. Praise God for ebooks at least😂. Great post and happy reading!
Whaaaat? How can you cross the veil and not set them free? Blasphemy.
Thank goodness for ebooks, for sure. If I didn’t have them to whip out now and then in my couple of minutes of downtime, I’d never get any reading done haha.
Both of your recently finished books sound so good, I’m going to have to add them to my TBR list. Happy reading! Here’s my WWW https://bargainsleuth2010.wordpress.com/2020/10/14/www-wednesday-october-fourteenth/

Yeah, the horror tag is the only reason I’m not excited about Ring Shout myself. I love Clark’s work, but the horror sounds too… horror-y for me right now.
But! I Pinocchio retelling? That’s different! I don’t hear of many of those.

It’s a bit of a hard read to get through emotionally, but it’s been wonderful so far!
Sammiiiiieeeee, stop worrying about our buddy read. You can take as much time as you want. I will just put in on hold and read something else in the meantime. I should, for example, have already started that buddy read I had with Mariken which I in turn haven’t started yet. So, no pressure, okay?
If I don’t worry about it, who will?! Such an itty, bitty buddy read. It needs someone to fret over it!
Ha, but this comment is late, and we’ve also finished, and yaaaay. I stopped slacking finally lol.
