It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

On a glossy black door inside a well-lit wardrobe, a tiny circle of gold pulsed with light, and at its center was a small, glowing W.

Come in, it seemed to say with each gentle beat. Hurry up!

By the time Jupiter left for the bazaar on Friday evening and the guests began to arrive, Frank was welcoming people to the “Hotel Deucalion end-of-summer Sunset Gala.”

Gala?” Kedgeree said heatedly. “Frank, this was supposed to be a dinner. Do you know what the difference is between a dinner and a gala? About two hundred people that’s what.”

“Goodness, i know. Isn’t it dreadful?” Frank was utterly unable to hide his glee as a cavalcade of motorcars pulled up noisily in the forecourt. “I suppose word got out that I was throwing a little do, and people just couldn’t stay away. Bless them.”

Hollowpox

Morrigan Crow and her friends have survived their first year as proud scholars of the elite Wundrous Society, helped bring down the nefarious Ghastly Market, and proven themselves loyal to Unit 919. Now Morrigan faces a new, exciting challenge: to master the mysterious Wretched Arts, and control the power that threatens to consume her.

But a strange and frightening illness has taken hold of Nevermoor, turning infected Wunimals into mindless, vicious Unnimals on the hunt. As victims of the Hollowpox multiply, panic spreads. And with the city she loves in a state of fear, Morrigan quickly realizes it’s up to her to find a cure for the Hollowpox, even if it will put her – and everyone in Nevermoor – in more danger than she ever imagined.

This is a weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next Monday’s prompt is: Halloween freebie.

You know what? I feel like I’ve done scary books to death at this point, so I want to do something different this time. So how about covers with Halloween colors or a Halloween vibe? Get a little in the spirit, at least!

Everless     Skulduggery Pleasant     Moira Ashe: Enemy Within     100 Gates     The Kishi

I’ve had Everless on my TBR for ever now. The cover gives me total Halloween vibes, though, between the orangish-brown (at least on my computer) sand and the dark background and the ornate hourglass. Definitely screams Halloween to me!

Is there truly anything more Halloween than a skeleton?! Not only does the cover of Skulduggery Pleasant hit the Halloween vibes, but it makes the skeleton look so freaking cool, so obviously I want to meet him.

I added Moira Ashe: Enemy Within to my TBR so long ago that I completely forgot I did it. the cover is so cool, though, with a smoky werewolf. Halloween is obviously time for werewolves and vampires and ghouls galore!

Hmm. Do I remember adding 100 Gates to my TBR? No, I do not. There seems to be a pattern here, and I’m wondering if I should be concerned. Either way, though, it’s there, and I definitely associate spooky forests and lurking wolf shadows with Halloween!

Not gonna lie, the kishi on the cover of The Kishi looks like it’d be lurking in dark alleys on Halloween night, waiting to jump out on unsuspecting victims. Plus, the orange and black of the cover is even the right color scheme for Halloween!
