For those who celebrate it, Halloween is right around the corner, so the time for dressing up is upon us!
If I’m honest, I never was one for trick or treating. Never really saw the point, and I can’t be bothered to dress up because I’m lame and boring. Minion, though, loves Halloween, and always spends a lot of time deciding what she wants to be. This year, she’s a unicorn. She even dyed the tips of her hair blue with Kool Aid to match … although, by some twist of fate, it actually looks like a dark green, which she was even happier with.
Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is a Halloween freebie, so I thought it would be fun to pick out costumes for my favorite characters!
Sure, you’ve seen these books and characters on this blog before, I can almost guarantee it, but you’ve never seen them quite like this. I’m giving them a ghoulish makeover so that they’ll be all prepped and prime for this Halloween season to look their spookiest and best.
Rowan
Scythe
The Grim Reaper
I’m pretty sure Ronan would do this ironically, but he also would enjoy scaring the bejeesus out of everyone, too. I imagine that in the post-mortality era, the very symbol of mortality and death would be akin to the bogeyman. But also … the grim reaper carries a scythe and they’re technically scythes, and he’s not against reaping people sooo … listen, there’s so many layers to this pun that I can’t even begin to explain them. MOVING ON!
Gideon Nav
Gideon the Ninth
Crowley
If we’re honest, Gideon’s already 72% of the way there. She’s got the sunglasses and the demeanor and the short red hair, at the very least. This would be a very easy costume, and I feel like that’s right up her alley. Let’s not strain ourselves too much, but at the same time, why not have a bit of fun with it? She could spend the entire day calling Harrow Aziraphale and trying to convince her to dress up with her, which would drive Harrow absolutely bonkers, so that’s a nice added bonus.
Teraeth
The Ruin of Kings
A Dragon
This would 100% be to torment Kihrin. That’s it. Teraeth would follow him around and mock him about aaaall the failings he has with a dragon in this book. Well … I don’t know. Can you call a dragon being obsessed with you a failing? It was amusing, at least, so of course Teraeth would exploit it to its fullest. Also, maaaaybe there’s just a teensy bit of subliminal messaging hidden somewhere in there that not even Teraeth is aware of because men are so freaking annoying and oblivious.
Jacob
City of Ghosts
Ghost
Get it? Because Jacob is a ghost. It’s exactly the sort of thing he’d get a kick out of and Cass would roll her eyes at (but secretly love … come on, we all know it). Probably just a white sheet with eye holes cut out, since he’d put no effort at all into it. Just for laughs.
Enrique
The Gilded Wolves
Epicurus
I can see Enrique dressing up as a super famous, yet more obscure, figure in history like Epicurus. No one would know who he’s supposed to be, which would leave him flabbergasted. He’d huffily quote the Tetrapharmakos at them. They’d stare back blankly, even more confused. Eventually, he’d end up sulking in a corner until Hypnos convinced him otherwise. But not before making a snide remark about how Enrique should’ve just gone with Hypnos’ idea for couples costumes, which would’ve obviously been super gaudy and utterly ridiculous.
Also, I can hear you there, in front of your screen, wondering who the heck Epicurus is. Siiiiigh. Ancient Greek philosopher, founded Epicureanism. His work inspired quite a few of the famous Enlightenment thinkers. Very impressive resume. You should totally Google him.
Henry Silver
Drowned Country
A Fae
The costume would be wildly inaccurate, but very flamboyant. Definitely eye-catching and attention-grabbing. Tobias would spend the entire time pointing out all the inaccuracies of Henry’s costume, absolutely none of which Henry would actually listen to and take to heart. Henry would absolutely attempt to get Tobias to dress up already, and Tobias would staunchly refuse. Or just claim he’s already dressed up as the wild man of the wood, and doesn’t it just suit him? At which point, Silver would throw up his hands in exasperation and go rant to someone (probably poor Bramble) about how impossible Tobias is.
Death
Mort
Black Cat
Death is likely to go all out for his black cat costume. Maybe even turn into one. Can he do that? If not, I’m sure he’d find someone to turn him into one. He’d be the Death of Cats for one night. Also, imagine the expression on the poor souls who have to be reaped that night, only to find themselves being taken by a black cat. Meh, if he meows and purrs, I’m sure they’ll forgive him. There are worse ways to go.
Jupiter North
Nevermoor
Mary Poppins
He would make a stunning Mary Poppins, with his hair and beard all neatly trimmed and styled. Plus, dressed to the nines in a really sleek, proper suit. Of course, if you suggest that Mary Poppins is, in fact, a female, he might point out that, fine, he’s dressed as Marius Poppins, but either way. Also, don’t engage him on a discussion about where Mary Poppins originally comes from. Obviously, she’s a member of the Wundrous Society. After all, she carries an umbrella everywhere, and performs all these Wundrous acts.
Goblin King
Wintersong
Phantom of the Opera
This actually might be just a tad too on the nose. Der Erlkonig is every bit as melancholic and dramatic and just too much as the phantom is. I don’t even think the Goblin King would have to try to pretend to be the Phantom. Sulking and pining and bemoaning things just comes naturally to him. Also, stalking women. This is obviously a role he’s been preparing for.
Murderbot
All Systems Red
Themself
This would be … a struggle. Why even do this to yourself? The minute you suggest Murderbot dress up for Halloween, they would shut down and question everything simultaneously. What’s the point of Halloween? Why would anyone change their appearance for just a day? Besides the fact that Murderbot has already undergone extensive (permanent) modifications which serve a purpose. What possible purpose would there be to dress up as a werewolf for one day? Besides, isn’t that offensive to actual werewolves? And then you want them to go out and do what?! Parade around in front of other people? For candy?
Likely, Murderbot would put you on mute and refuse to talk to you for at least the following week, just for suggesting it.
I love Ronan’s costume idea. How fun!

LMAO the image of Jupiter as Mary Poppins is amazing! He’d be so perfect for it 😂 Why can’t this actually happen though!? Also, totally agree about Ronan’s costume. He would definitely do it and it would be hilariously terrifying! Oh, Ronan ❤️ I haven’t read any of the other books you mentioned but you definitely make me want to pick them up asap so I can gush about them too! Great creative post, Sammie 🙂
I’ve never been big on dressing up either. Even as a kid, I wasn’t much fun! LOL. I do like chocolate, though, so I used to dress up just so I could get free candy 🙂
Happy TTT!

I loved this so much!
Jupiter North would be a perfect Mary Poppins! And I can totally see Death finding a way to dress up as a black cat. He would even MEOW in all caps.
Though now I really want to see Murderbot going trick-or-treating with its young humans.

Such a fun take on the topic! And now I really, really want to read Gideon the Ninth and Scythe 🙂
Yeah, I definitely feel like Murderbot is all set for Halloween just as themself (and totally wouldn’t understand the point of if all anyway!).
And I love the idea of Tereath dressing up as a dragon to torment Kihrin!
