It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
What if the only way up in society was through war?
Would you join the ranks of the soldiers?
Would you fight to prove yourself?

Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

The Missing Dragon     Fangirl, Vol 1.     Sisters of Shadow and Light

The Missing Dragon by Ryan Estrada
★★★★ || Goodreads
This was just stinking cute. It’s a mix of adventure and comedy, with some learning packed in for good measure. I can see this being a big hit with the middle grade audience. Plus, I learned a little bit about Hangul, which was super fun!

Fangirl, Vol. 1 by Sam Maggs & Rainbow Rowell
★★★☆☆ || Goodreads
This was … meh? I’m getting the vibe, from what others are saying, that the actual book may just not translate well to graphic novel, and it does seem that way. It didn’t feel like anything really happened until right before this volume ended, which was kind of frustrating. I’m interested in checking out the original Fangirl novel now, though. I feel like I can deal with slow plots more in word format, because I can skim. When I read manga and graphic novels, I want something that moves along nicely. Or that looks visually gorgeous. Either way.

Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend
★★★★ || Goodreads
This book is just … everything. If you haven’t read the Nevermoor series yet, you really need to. This is the third book, and it’s every bit as magical and wonderful as the previous two books. I definitely wasn’t disappointed. My favorite part is that even though Nevermoor retains its wonder and beauty, we get to see more of its dark underbelly, the things it tries so hard to hide. The world feels much more fleshed out! There’s also a ton of secrets to explore (and more to come!).

Sooo … I actually have a ton of blog tours coming up, which is great, but that combined with the fact that my reading time has kind of tanked means that I’ve put quite a few books on hold right now. It’s … not pretty.

I’m still working on (and absolutely loving) The Silvered Serpents, but my buddy reader’s going slowly with this one, so I don’t feel too bad to have slowed down the pace, either. We’re clearly perfect buddy readers in that we’re equal slackers. xD

The Rage of Dragons

The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter
Status: 35%

The Omehi people have been fighting an unwinnable fight for almost two hundred years. Their society has been built around war and only war. The lucky ones are born gifted. One in every two thousand women has the power to call down dragons. One in every hundred men is able to magically transform himself into a bigger, stronger, faster killing machine.

Everyone else is fodder, destined to fight and die in the endless war.

Young, gift-less Tau knows all this, but he has a plan of escape. He’s going to get himself injured, get out early, and settle down to marriage, children, and land. Only, he doesn’t get the chance.

Those closest to him are brutally murdered, and his grief swiftly turns to anger. Fixated on revenge, Tau dedicates himself to an unthinkable path. He’ll become the greatest swordsman to ever live, a man willing to die a hundred thousand times for the chance to kill the three who betrayed him.

I started this one and dove in with fervor. Couldn’t help it. This has been so good thus far. It’s so easy to relate to Tau and his anger at the injustice of this world. Plus … you know, DRAGONS! Sort of.

It’s so weird, because as much as I’m enjoying this, I can’t really tell you anything overall that’s happened or that I particularly like? It’s also the type of book where I’m afraid to spoil things, because everything feels a bit like a spoiler.

Warriors of Wing and Flame

Warriors of Wing and Flame by Sara B. Larson
Status: pg 106/381

The doorway between the magical Visempirum and the human world has been reopened. Paladin are once more living in the citadel where Zuhra and Inara grew up completely isolated by the magical hedge that trapped them there. Amidst the brewing conflict between the Paladin and humans looms the threat of Barloc, who has stolen Inara’s immense power and continues to elude the Paladin who are desperately searching for him.

In this sequel to Sisters of Shadow and Light, Inara and Zuhra must navigate the treacherous paths of self-discovery, their love for each other, and for the boys who have captured their hearts. Together, they search for the strength within themselves to bridge the divide between the two worlds they inhabit, even as war threatens to destroy everything—and everyone—they love.

I’m not too far into this yet, but not gonna lie … I’m still waiting for something to happen. It’s just been a lot of drama, emotional feelings, and some cheesy romance.

I will say that I’m feeling the mystery that’s going on, though. I hope that kicks more into gear soon, because yes, more of that! It’s exciting! It’s interesting!

Also, the writing is still gorgeous. Although, gorgeous writing doesn’t make up for a lack of actual action. So I’m a little torn on this one. It doesn’t have the same pull as the first one did for me so far, which is a shame, because I enjoy the characters and you would think magic and mystery would be enough, right? But they just haven’t played big parts in the book so far.

    Fires of Vengeance     The Hollow Gods     How to Remember Everything     Amari and the Night Brothers

Being both the slacker and overachiever I am, it probably comes as no surprise that my upcoming reads are basically all blog tour reads. Oops? No regrets! Except maybe the whole losing sleep thing, but it’s fiiiine. Sleep is overrated.

I haven’t even finished The Rage of Dragons yet, and I can already tell you I’m going to be eager to dive into Fires of Vengeance. Also, do you see that cover?! So far, the dragons haven’t really come into play in the first book that much, but I have hope!

I saw The Hollowed Gods going around earlier this year and missed out, so when I saw there would be another blog tour for it, I definitely jumped on it! The cover is gorgeous, the beginning grabbed my attention, and it sounds like it’s going to be something I’ll really enjoy.

I actually joined the blog tour for How to Remember Everything on a whim. This sounds so cheesy, but my memory has been not great lately, and I know Minion struggles with recalling things, so I figured two for the price of one! Maybe we’ll both get something useful out of this book.

I actually hadn’t planned on reading Amari and the Night Brothers just yet, but there’s been an exciting change of plans, so I need to squeeze it in ASAP. So it found its way here. It’s already one of my most anticipated 2021 releases, so I’m definitely not complaining about reading it early!

  1. Darn it, I had the second Nevermoor book in my hand at the library and PUT IT DOWN. What was I thinking? I know, I was thinking I should focus on my Halloween themed reads but now I have so much regret.

    Fangirl was a fun novel but what blew my mind was when Rainbow Rowell took the fake story that was the basis of the fan fiction and wrote not one but TWO other books based in that world. Is this meta? I think it is but I misuse that word frequently. Either way, loved the book and loved Carry On.
