It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.
Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.
“What if there’s a fire?” Ariadne asked. “Or another emergency?”
“Either handle it or let me die. I’m tired.”
This first book in a feminist space opera duology follows seven resistance fighters who will free the galaxy from the ruthless Tholosian Empire — or die trying.
When Eris faked her death, she thought she had left her old life as the heir to the galaxy’s most ruthless empire behind. But her recruitment by the Novantaen Resistance, an organization opposed to the empire’s voracious expansion, throws her right back into the fray.
Eris has been assigned a new mission: to infiltrate a spaceship ferrying deadly cargo and return the intelligence gathered to the Resistance. But her partner for the mission, mechanic and hotshot pilot Cloelia, bears an old grudge against Eris, making an already difficult infiltration even more complicated.
When they find the ship, they discover more than they bargained for: three fugitives with firsthand knowledge of the corrupt empire’s inner workings.
Together, these women possess the knowledge and capabilities to bring the empire to its knees. But the clock is ticking: the new heir to the empire plans to disrupt a peace summit with the only remaining alien empire, ensuring the empire’s continued expansion. If they can find a way to stop him, they will save the galaxy. If they can’t, millions may die.

This is a weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next Monday’s prompt is: nonfiction.
I’m going to admit that I don’t read a lot of nonfiction books, which is so funny because as a kid, I used to read all the nonfiction books. I’m not sure when that changed, but needless to say, I need to basically force myself to read a couple nonfiction books per year, and they tend to be funnier books.
Starting from when I was, like, three all the way until I was fourteen, I wanted to be a paleontologist. So it may not be a surprise that The Age of Dinosaurs: The Rise and Fall of the World’s Most Remarkable Animals is on my TBR list for next year! It’s been awhile since I’ve read a dinosaur book. A couple years, at least. Which means it’s definitely time to pick up another one.
While we’re on the subject of dinosaurs, I still want to read The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs: A New History of a Lost World, which was kindly added to my list by Ryan @ Muse With Me. So thanks for that, Ryan. Just what my TBR needed. xD I’m definitely feeling the dino books for 2021, though.
Not gonna lie, I absolutely love Amber Ruffin and would probably read the back of a cereal box if she wrote it. So the minute I saw You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories about Racism pop up on NetGalley, I requested it and was so lucky to get approved! I absolutely can’t wait to read this!
You might see a theme here with the next two books and the last one. I also happen to love Mike Birbiglia, and I think his struggles with reluctant parenthood are both hysterical and relatable, so I definitely want to read The New One. I tried to get an eARC earlier this year, but that didn’t work out, so really, now I’m just waiting to be able to get my hands on it!
I’m actually a little disappointed in myself that Born A Crime is still on my TBR and that I haven’t actually read it yet, despite buying an ebook and totally intending to. I’m not even sure what’s taking me so long? Just a case of an overlong TBR, I suppose!
Great pick for the FLF Sammie! It has to be one of my favourite Sci-Fi reads of the year :D.
I currently have this book on my shelf. I haven’t read it, but it seems interesting.

This book sounds intense and would easily distract me from our terrible world! Here’s mine: “A WELL-BEHAVED WOMAN”
Yes! Seven Devils sounds so good! I love the excerpts you shared. I hope I will get a chance to read that one as well. I do not read a lot of nonfiction, but I enjoy it when I do. I haven’t read any of your TBR nonfiction books, sadly. Born a Crime is one I have been considering though. I hope you have a great weekend and enjoy your reading!
I really liked Born a Crime! I listened to that one on audio (read by Trevor) and it was great. I didn’t like The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs, though. I didn’t want to read the anecdotes the author included… there just weren’t enough dinosaurs for me. 😉

Ooh, I love the first lines and lines at the 56% mark! I want to read this book 😂
There was me planning to spend a good chunk of November reading non-fiction and I’ve ended up reading practically nothing this month 🙃 How are we already at the end of November?! Of these books I’ve only read Born a Crime and omgoodness, it was the first audiobook I ever tried and it was SO good! Highly rec it!
