It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
What if your family was haunted by a curse?
Would you accept the inevitability of it?
Would you try to break it?

Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

Halfway to Harmony The Mutant Mushroom Takeover The Unadjusteds Seven Devils

Oh my gosh, you guys, this book! I went for an emotional roller coaster ride with this one, and I loved it. It’s very character driven, which isn’t something I normally read a lot, but the characters here just stole my heart and I couldn’t wait to go on a little adventure with Walter and the rest! My review for this one is going live today, so check it out!

This book was gloriously sciencey, but also packed with a fun mystery and lots of action. So the best of both worlds, in other words. It starts with a really fun “monster in the woods” trope that I’m ever so fond of and it really takes off from there. There’s also a strong friendship between Maggie and her best friend Nate, and the banter between the two is just *chef’s kiss*.

Stay tuned for my review of this! This was a fun urban fantasy meets dystopia sort of book, filled with powered up humans fighting “the power” in so many ways, which is always fun. I enjoyed the characters in this, and the plot was fast-paced and moved along nicely, without really dragging. The biggest thing I wasn’t fond of was the love triangle (which almost always seems to be the case these days!).

This took longer to finish than I anticipated it would. I enjoyed it, but I didn’t love it. I’ll definitely be reading the sequel, but that ending just annoyed me, and I don’t think that was the response I was supposed to have. I did love the characters, though, and the way their stories were woven together and crossed in interesting ways and unraveled slowly. The adventure and heisty parts were super fun, too! I’ll be curious what the next book has in store.

I haven’t actually touched Mistborn: The Final Empire, though that’s on my radar to focus on more once I finish Sherlock Holmes and The Beast of the Stapletons. I did read a couple chapters in that book, so it’s moving along, albeit slowly. I think I’m enjoying it much more taking it a couple chapters at a time rather than trying to rush read straight through like I do other books.

A Pinch of Magic

A Pinch of Magic by Michelle Harrison
Status: pg 20/397

A spellbinding middle grade fantasy about three sistersβ€”adventurous Betty, curious Charlie, and proper Flissβ€”who go on a quest to break the curse that’s haunted their family for generations.

All Betty Widdershins wants is an adventureβ€”one that takes her far away from Crowstone, the gloomy island where she’s always lived. But instead of an adventure, Betty and her sisters, Fliss and Charlie, are given of a set of magical objects, each with its own powers: a scruffy carpet bag, a set of wooden nesting dolls, and a gilt-framed mirror. And these magical objects come with their own terrible secret: the sisters’ family is haunted by a generations-long curse that prevents them from ever leaving their islandβ€”at the cost of death.

The sisters set out to break the curse and free their family forever. But after stumbling upon a mysterious prisoner who claims to be able to help them, they find themselves in great danger. And in order to break the curseβ€”and stay aliveβ€”they must unravel a mystery that goes back centuries, one that involves shipwrecks, smugglers, and sorcery of the most perilous kind.

This one’s a group read for Middle Grade Marvels, which I highly recommend you check out if you’re into middle grade books or are curious about them! I’ve been really bad about keeping up with the group reads the past few months, so I’m hoping to get back onboard with this one. You’ll probably see this appear in the rest of my WWW for the month, since I’m trying to read along with everyone else and not rush ahead.

I’m only just starting this, really, but the setting is already charming, and the main character wants an adventure, which I’m totally up for. Minion read it and enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to getting more into the meat of the story!

Karma Moon     The Ruthless Lady's Guide to Wizardry     The Midnight Library

I honestly have no idea what I want to read next. I’m caught up in this mood of wanting to read everything all at once but only having two eyes and a limited amount of reading time.

I’ve been really curious about Karma Moon, and it sounds like what I need right now, so I think I’m going to go ahead and pick that one up soon. It’s never a bad time for a middle grade about ghosts.

The plan right now is that The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry will be my next read. I actually hope to pick it up a little later today. I’ve read the first chapter already and was immediately sucked in, so I’m really looking forward to it!

I also convinced the library to get The Midnight Library, which I immediately snatched up once it was finished processing, so I think I’m going to go ahead and try to start that. I like to have one physical book at a time, and since I’ll be going slow with A Pinch of Magic and probably just reading it at home in the evenings, this seems like a good one to bring around with me.

    • You should definitely pick one up again! They’ve got so many things that adult books lose, including cuteness and wonder and whimsy. I’m halfway through A Pinch of Magic, and it’s really good so far!

  1. I just finished Bad Dogs on a Bad Day and Bad Dogs with Good Haircuts, and plan to read Nielsen’s Rescue and Leighton’s National Parks tonight. During the day, I don’t read anything! ; ) I did love the Mutant Mushroom Takeover but wished it had a better title and cover. It was gloriously dark but takes a bit of handselling.

    • I don’t get a chance to read much during the day, either, honestly. Silly work, not giving us time to read. xD

I absolutely LOVE “Bad Dogs on a Bad Day and Bad Dogs with Good Haircuts” as a title!

I agree about The Mutant Mushroom Takeover. I wasn’t sure about it going in, but I absolutely loved the story. I’m really not sure how it could have changed, either. I think it’s just some weird ingrained bias, I guess? Since the cover DOES fit the story, in my opinion, but also looks like something i wouldn’t necessarily like at the same time, even though I did haha.

I really want to read Seven Devils because it sounds exciting. A Pinch of Magic is one of my favourite Middle Grade series, so I hope you end up loving it.

    • Seven Devils was a lot of fun! The only part I really wasn’t fond of was the ending. xD

Oh my gosh, yes, I am absolutely LOVING A Pinch of Magic so far! It’s so stinking cute and fun.

    • So glad to hear you liked it! Looking forward to picking it up. :3

I hope you do! It’s so worth a read. Not quite what I expected, and I loved it!

    • You really should check it out! It’s super cute, and I’m loving it so far. Hope you get to check out Ruthless Lady’s Guide, too. I’m really enjoying that, too.

    • Pinch of Magic has been suuuuper cute so far! And I for sure know what that’s like haha. Mine is a library book, which my colleague has on hold after me, so the pressure to finish it is real haha. Even though she told me not to rush, because I just gave her another book to read this past week, since she read The House in the Cerulean Sea and loved it. πŸ˜‰

  3. Oh, so many good books here! The midnight library is an upcoming read for me as well and I’m so excited. I’ve heard such great things!

    • So have I! I hope we both end up loving it. πŸ˜€ I’ve really enjoyed Matt Haig’s books in the past, so I’m thinking this will be as good as everyone says!

    • I hope you’re able to get to it! So far, it’s been worth the read haha. I absolutely LOVE Delly (although I know her personality won’t be for everyone).

  4. I’m so behind with the bookclub books lately. I don’t think I have finished any of them. It’s just my brain refusing to read a book because somebody tells me to read it. πŸ˜› Although we picked such great books lately. I mean Tristan Strong? I was begging them to read that book and now?
Anyway, seems like you had a lot of great reads lately. I hope that streak continues. πŸ™‚

    • Saaame. And I totally missed Tristan Strong! Which is a bummer, but I was so busy at that point that I just couldn’t deal with another thing on top of everything else. I already had A Pinch of Magic and had been intending to read it, though, so that made it so much easier, since I just had to go into Minion’s room and grab it from her bookshelf lol.
