It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.
Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.
“Doubtful,” I say as we cross the lobby.
Where there are ghosts, Cassidy Blake follows … unless it’s the other way around?
Cass thinks she might have this ghost-hunting thing down. After all, she and her ghost best friend, Jacob, have survived two haunted cities while travelling for her parents’ TV show.
But nothing can prepare Cass for New Orleans, which wears all of its hauntings on its sleeve. In a city of ghost tours and tombs, raucous music and all kinds of magic, Cass could get lost in all the colourful, grisly local legends. And the city’s biggest surprise is a foe Cass never expected to face: a servant of Death itself.
Cass takes on her most dangerous challenge yet…
- Fantastic writer who always crafts fabulous books.
- Continuation of a great middle grade series.
- Paranormal story filled with ghosts and goodness.
- Ghost sidekicks, ftw!
- A spooky visit and tour of New Orleans.
- A guest appearance by … a servent of (female) Death?
5 On My TBR is hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook and is meant to take place on Mondays. But since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next Monday’s prompt is: children’s books or middle grade.
I read a lot of middle grade, so this prompt was absolutely no trouble at all! The hardest thing was just narrowing it down to only five, which I suppose is a good problem to have.
The Wolf’s Curse by Jessica Vitalis
With a narrator compared to Lemony Snicket and The Book Thief, how could I not add this one to my TBR? There’s also a Great White Wolf that steals souls! Based on the synopsis, it sounds like this one tackles grief and death, and I’ve really been looking for some good middle grade books that do that, so that’s a big plus in my book.
Willodeen by Katherine Applegate
Not gonna lie, that freaking adorable cover is what first caught my eye. Then when I realized it was by Katherine Applegate? Yup, auto added to my TBR. I’ve loved Applegate’s work since I was a kid, and I’ve continued right on reading them. Everything about this summary, from loving animals to trying to help fix nature, sounds absolutely charming.
A Wilder Magic by Juliana Brandt
This is the same author who wrote The Wolf of Cape Fen, which I loved and found utterly charming. So heck yes, I want to read her next book, please! Not gonna lie, this caught my attention first because it’s set in the Appalachian mountains, where I currently live, and I’m a sucker for a familiar setting. This does sound just adorable in general, though.
The Healer of the Water Monster by Brian Young
A middle grade book based on Navajo beliefs … yes, please! I’m loving all the middle grade books I’m finding recently focusing on American Indian beliefs, and I will always and forever read them. I’m super curious about this and what other myths/lore from Navajo beliefs will make an appearance in the book!
Cece Rios and the Desert of Souls by Kaela Rivera
More books focused on Hispanic lore and culture! Yes! Gimme! Dark creatures and magic and spirits sounds right up my alley, and I’m looking forward to picking this one up!
Victoria Schwab is always a reliable read and these quotes definitely have me intrigued! Also, the cover for Willodeen is absolutely adorable! I hope you have a lovely week and do drop by my Friday post if you have the time! – Juli @ A Universe in Words
Gorgeous cover and great excerpts. Thanks for sharing, and here’s mine: “BLOOD ORANGE”

Waiiiiit, does that mean you have already started? Without me???!!!
I read … exactly one chapter. xD Just enough so I could write this post LOL. I have homework to do all day today, so rest assured, I’m not exactly ahead of you haha.
I have the first two books in this series and am hoping I can talk my daughter into reading them with me this summer. If not, I’ll just read them on my own. I’ve been wanting to try Schwab’s writing for some time now–all her books sound so good!
All the books on your TBR list this week are tempting me. Every single one.
I hope you have a great weekend!

You definitely need to read the sequels if you liked the first one!
