First Line Friday 56 || Sarcastic Heroes With Superpowers

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Fredaā€™s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what youā€™re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

Oh please, like you’ve never wanted to drive at high speed down a Los Angeles storm drain.

Although I’m guessing your fantasy doesn’t involve being chased by a gang of outlaw bikers. Who are shooting automatic weapons at you. And I’m a hundred per cent sure you would prefer not to be in a car holding forty pounds of stolen, high-grade methamphetamine.

When I tell him what I want to do, the sour look on his face gets even worse.

He slowly turns, starts walking … then looks back. “Who the hell are you?”

I show him my teeth. “I’m Batman. Get moving, jackass.”

Eye of the Sh*t Storm

Teagan Frost might be getting better at moving sh*t with her mind ā€“ but her job working as a telekinetic government operative only ever seems to get harder. Thatā€™s not even talking about her car-crash of a love life . . .

And things are about to get even tougher. No sooner has Teagan chased off one psychotic kid hell-bent on trashing the whole West Coast, but now she has to contend with another supernatural being who can harness devastating electrical power. And if Teagan canā€™t stop him, the whole of Los Angeles will be facing the sh*tstorm of the centuryā€¦

5 On My TBR is hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook and is meant to take place on Mondays. But since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next Monday’s prompt is: double timeline.

This one’s a little hard for me, because I’m actually never really sure if a book has a double timeline until I pick it up and start reading it. There are very few books where I know it does ahead of time. So I’m going to interpret this one loosely and pick books that I think have non-linear plotlines.

The House of Always     This Is How You Lose the Time War     The Space Between Worlds     Truly Devious     Plain Bad Heroines

The House of Always by Jenn Lyons

Since this is book four in a series, this is a safe bet that it will have double timelines, since all the other books have. This series has the most epic story along with characters that are compelling and fun to journey with. I’m so worried about all my babies. *squeezes them tight* I have no idea what waits for them in this book. All I know is I don’t want this series to end, and I don’t want anything bad to happen to them. Even though it obviously will because pffft this freaking series. It’s gonna give me gray hairs. But in a good way?

This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone

Been meaning to read this one for a while. All I know is it’s epistolary with letters back and forth between people on two different sides of the war. I’m not sure if there’s a double timeline, but it does seem like there’s at least some skipping around? Eh, I’m going with it. It’s got time in the title, at the very least. I’ve heard this one’s good, so I’m looking forward to picking this one up.

The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson

There’s multiverse travel in this, so I’m willing to bet there’s some form of double timeline or non-linear timeline. I’ve also heard this one’s really good! This is another one that I don’t really know much about, but I’m going off recommendations from others that I should definitely read this one.

Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson

It says right in the description “two interwoven mysteries,” which I take to mean dual timelines! I’ve heard wonderful things about this series and I’ve wanted to check it out for a while. This sounds like it’ll be a fun thriller to read, and I’m always up for some mysteries.

Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth

I’ve been meaning to read this one for quite a while now and just haven’t had a chance. A story within a story is definitely dual timelines, though, right?! I’m always up for bad heroines … as in antiheroines, I assume, of course. Which are the best kind. Again, murder mysteries are fun! Murder is fun! Erm … I mean … to read about, obviously. Ahem.

    • Oh my gosh. Lauren. You really do. I can’t even. I don’t even want to say anything because I’m afraid of ruining something, but you NEED to catch up on this series. xD

Also, it’s not a trilogy! For some reason I was thinking it was? I guess I’ve just gotten so used to trilogies in fantasy lately. So I am SUPER PUMPED that there are going to be more books.

    • It was! And oh my gosh, YES! I’m so excited. I’m not sure why I thought it would be a trilogy (I guess because there are SO MANY trilogies in fantasy), but I’m glad it’s not. I mean, by the time I hit the end of the book, I obviously realized it wouldn’t be, but still. xD

    • If you enjoy urban fantasy, I DEFINITELY recommend this series! You’ll probably love it.

I’ll be picking up House of Always soon, and I am soooo not ready for it. xD I’m trying to talk myself up, but we’re getting close to the end of the series, and I’m prepared for some feels to be shattered soon. I know it’s coming. I can sense it. Hope you get the chance to read it soon!

  1. Wow. Grabbed by the first line. I’m a fan of snark and that sounds super good. I’m going to look for it right now.

Interesting that both you and Freda have shared books with sh*t in the title this week. šŸ™‚

    • I hope you get to read it! It’s definitely one of my favorite series.

Guess we’re just a bunch of sh*theads? Sorry, couldn’t help myself. xD It seems like it’s being used in more book titles lately, or maybe that’s just me.

  2. This is How You Lose the Time War, The Space Between Worlds, & Plain Bad Heroines are some of my favorite books! I hope you like them as much as I do!
