First Line Friday 56 || The Man in the Sword

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

Hall of Rutger’s Howe had just inherited a great deal of money and was therefore spending her evening trying to figure out how to kill herself.

“It’s what they speak in Charlock, but I don’t know it. Halla?”

“My brother taught me about five words. I can say hello, goodbye, and something very unkind about their goats.”

“…let’s skip that.”

Halla is a housekeeper who has suddenly inherited her great-uncle’s estate… and, unfortunately, his relatives. Sarkis is an immortal swordsman trapped in a prison of enchanted steel. When Halla draws the sword that imprisons him, Sarkis finds himself attempting to defend his new wielder against everything from bandits and roving inquisitors to her own in-laws… and the sword itself may prove to be the greatest threat of all…

  • Funny narrative that will, at the very least, have you cracking a smile.
  • Maybe even snort-laughing on occasion.
  • Older female protagonist who plays dumb but is smarter than she looks.
  • A talking sword! Well, technically a man in a sword. Close enough!
  • A ridiculously cute will they/won’t they romance.
  • Sword-fighting and action and danger.

5 On My TBR is hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook and is meant to take place on Mondays. But since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next Monday’s prompt is: fae/faeries.

I don’t tend to read a ton of books about fae or faeries, but there are some. I’ll have to try to remember them, because I think I tend to add them to my TBR and then forget about them! I think it’s because I’m sort of picky about books with fae, since they can be overdone.

House of Earth and Blood     An Enchantment of Ravens     A Dark and Hollow Star     Ink & Sigil     The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

I’ve heard good things about this. I’ve been told repeatedly that I need to read it. Heck, I’ve even recommended it to patrons who have come back in and told me I need to read it. So yeah, I need to read this. I totally get the message. I’m not entirely sure where Fae come into play, but it’s tagged on Goodreads and Goodreads never lies, right? If it’s on Goodreads, it must be true!

An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

This one has a bit mixed reviews, but after reading A Sorcery of Thorns, I wanted to give this author’s other work a try. Also, the cover is gorgeous. I’m a bit of a sucker for covers with ravens and/or crows on them. The summary on this sounds really good, so of course I’m willing to give it a chance!

A Dark and Hollow Star by Ashley Shuttleworth

Let’s be honest, that cover is absolutely fierce. It’s the first thing that caught my attention about the book, and it keeps right on grabbing my attention. I’m not entirely sold on the story. It sounds like a lot of other Fae stories. The protagonists are a group of queer teens, though, and it sounds like there’s a bit of sarcastic narration going on, which I’m always up for.

Ink & Sigil by Kevin Hearne

I’ve been meaning to read this one for a while now. It sounds like the perfect comedic fantasy that I definitely need. I didn’t realize there were Fae in this, but it’s tagged, so I guess that’s a fun surprise! This sounds like it’s going to be one heck of a fun read.

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente

I know very little about this book other than it’s got a long title, dragons, and faeries. If I’m honest, that’s really all I need to know anyway. That’s enough to make me want to read it. This sounds like it’ll be a really cute read when I get to it.

I instantly knew what this book was! I read it last year and LOVED it. I really need to pick up the authors other works cause it was just so much fun to read. Great post Sammie 😀

    • YES! I’m going to read her backlist, because I’ve read two of her books now and loved them both. I don’t know if you realized, but there are other books set in the same world as this, I believe. I plan on checking out those series now. 🙂

    • YOU NEED TO READ THIS, NICOLE. Like right now. Tell your job you have more important things to do, I don’t care. xD You will love this.
