First Line Friday 56 || The Mummy Meets Indiana Jones

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

Sam let the first door chime go unanswered, occupied as she was with the stack of delicate books cradled in her arms. The second chime earned a grunt of displeasure from her as she scanned the shelves for the first edition of John Locke’s An Essay Concerning Human Understanding she had repaired last week. She spotted it, tucked safely between Kant and Machiavelli. The third chime rang so insistentlyy that she tipped the book forward too hard and it dropped to the floor with an ominous crack.

A soft wind brushed against her, curling over her collarbone and creeping up through the inner curve of her ear, forming into a whisper as it dissipated against her skin. It was like a breath, a cold sigh, a luring promise. The raven watched her, its call rhythmic as a heartbeat, though not an echo of her own. Her own heart was pumping far too fast, as if it knew better than her that they needed to escape.

Because she was sure—as sure as the grave—that the wind had whispered her name.

MAY THE HAZEL BRING YOU WISDOM AND THE ASPEN GUIDE AND PROTECT YOU…

Samantha Knox put away her childish fantasies of archaeological adventure the day her father didn’t return home from the Great War, retreating to the safety of the antique bookshop where she works. But when a mysterious package arrives with a damaged diary inside, Sam’s peaceful life is obliterated. Ruthless men intent on reclaiming the diary are after Sam, setting her and her best friend, along with her childhood crush, on a high-stakes adventure that lands them in the green hills outside Dublin, Ireland. Here they discover an ancient order with a dark purpose – to perform an occult ritual that will raise the Specter Queen, the Celtic goddess of vengeance and death, to bring about a war unlike any the world has ever seen. To stop them, Sam must solve a deviously complex cipher – one that will lead her on a treasure hunt to discover the ancient relic at the heart of the ritual: a bowl carved from the tree of life. Will she find the bowl and stop the curse of the Specter Queen, or will the ancient order bring about the end of the world?

Indiana Jones gets a refresh with this female-driven mystery adventure, set in the 1920s, full of ciphers, ancient relics, and heart-stopping action – the first in a brand-new series!

5 On My TBR is hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook and is meant to take place on Mondays. But since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next Monday’s prompt is: LGBTQ+ Rep.

This is an easy one. I enjoy easy prompts every so often. There have been a ton of fantastic-sounding LGBTQ+ books coming out recently, and I can’t wait to read them! I think the hardest part of this prompt was just narrowing it down to only five.

She Who Became the Sun     Trailer Park Trickster     Flash Fire     A Lesson in Vengeance     Lost in the Never Woods

She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan

Historical fiction fantasy is a genre that I’ve been loving lately. The fact that this is LGBTQ+ makes it even better! This is pitched as Mulan meets The Song of Achilles, and I’m very curious about that comparison. I’ve also heard good things about this one so far!

Trailer Park Trickster by David R. Slayton

The sequel to White Trash Warlock! I am definitely ready for more Adam Binder, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. The first book was left with some pretty big stakes and lots of things happening. It also happens to feature a super cute M/M couple . . . and sort of love triangle. Which I’m curious to see how things work out.

Flash Fire by T. J. Klune

The sequel to The Extraordinaries! I’m expecting some more sweet M/M romance between cinnamon rolls in this book. But also more superhero/superpower goodness. I honestly can’t wait to read more about Nick, because Nick is very much me in a male body. In a world of superheroes. Okay, Nick is a better version of me.

A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee

I’m not sure which I like more, the dark, twisty thriller this promises to be, the haunted boarding school, or the mention of witchcraft. Lucky for me, I really don’t have to choose between them because this book has it aaaall! As well as a F/F romance, too. It’s definitely sounding like the perfect fall read.

Lost in the Never Woods by Aidan Thomas

I’ve heard mixed reviews about this one, but in the end, I loved Cemetery Boys and will absolutely check out the author’s next book. It also sounds like a bit of a creepy Peter Pan retelling, which makes me all the more curious about it.
