It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.
Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.
The team was chanting in the huddle, and Paloma’s hand touched mine. I felt a flutter in my chest. I thought it meant one of the butterflies in my stomach got out. It didn’t.
Charlotte’s Web meets My Sister’s Keeper in this charming story told from the alternating perspectives of a boy with a fatal heart condition and the pig with the heart that could save his life.
Jeremiah’s heart skips a beat before his first soccer game, but it’s not nerves. It’s the first sign of a heart attack. He knows he needs to go to the hospital, but he’s determined to score a goal. Charging after the ball, he refuses to stop…even if his heart does.
J6 is a pig and the only one of his five brothers who survived the research lab. Though he’s never left his cell, he thinks of himself as a therapy pig, a scholar, and a bodyguard. But when the lab sends him to live with Jeremiah’s family, there’s one new title he’s desperate to have: brother.
At first, Jeremiah thinks his parents took in J6 to cheer him up. But before long, he begins to suspect there’s more to his new curly-tailed companion than meets the eye. When the truth is revealed, Jeremiah and J6 must protect each other at all costs—even if their lives depend on it.
- Utterly charming story about a boy and his pig that will win your heart.
- Leaves you with all the warm fuzzies you could possible want.
- Very apt comparison to Charlotte’s Web, for fans of that book.
- Adorable pig point of view with very apropos observations.
- Protagonist with a chronic illness he’s coming to terms with.
- Super cute sibling and family bonds.
5 On My TBR is hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook and is meant to take place on Mondays. But since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next Monday’s prompt is: Halloween freebie. Which obviously means I’m going to do spoooooky stories! Because is there really any other sort of Halloween freebie? Pfft.
What Lives in the Woods by Lindsay Currie
After reading Currie’s Scritch Scratch, I’ve decided to just go ahead and read all of her books, because it was delightful. This one has most of my favorite horror tropes: a mysterious, worn-down old house; local legends that sound made up . . . but are they; and best of all . . . some scary woods housing who knows what sorts of horrors! This one will be good for the nights when I want something creepy but maybe not to sit up all night watching the shadows move.
Dark Waters by Katherine Arden
Book three in this series! I enjoyed book two more than book one, so I’m hoping book three brings even more goodness. Plus, what’s not to love about that monster in the deep cover? It’s so chilling and creepy and I am definitely here for it!
The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward
If that cover doesn’t scream horror, I don’t know what does. It also happens to be comped to The Haunting of Hill House, which means I definitely need to read this. I’m also definitely struck by the cat who loves napping (no surprise there) and reading the Bible. Color me intrigued!
Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff
Listen. I don’t know why I haven’t read this yet, either. I’m just as disappointed in myself as you are. Still, despite this being one of my most anticipated books this year, I haven’t even gotten a copy yet (though rest assured, I will). This is paranormal horror, of course, so not traditionally what I think about when I think horror, but it’ll do the trick. If I know Kristoff’s writing (which I do) I’m sure it’ll give me plenty of chills!
The Hiddenseek by Nate Cernosek
I actually didn’t remember hearing about this one, but a copy just turned up in our library. We’ve got a new person purchasing children’s books and she has a similar taste and thought process as I do, which I’m absolutely loving! So yes, this definitely caught my eye the minute I saw it. This one sounds absolutely brilliant, and when I get a few minutes away from schoolwork and life, I’m for sure going to grab this up and give it a go.
I haven’t read much this week. But I am currently reading The A.B.C. Murders by Agatha Christie.

Here is my Friday 56: https://francebooktours.com/2021/10/22/double-identity-friday-56/
Thank you! I have a lot of fun with it. 😀
I can’t wait for Empire of the Vampire – I can’t wait to try it!
I’m hoping to get it for Christmas. Because hubby can’t blame me for getting more books if it’s a gift, right? 😉 But I feel like I’m probably going to want to own this one.
I enjoyed Dark Waters a lot—I hope you do too!

Glad to hear it! I’m still waiting for my library’s copy to come in, so it could be a little while, I guess. xD
