I have a confession, but promise you won’t think less of me. I only subscribe to Kindle Unlimited a month at a time, here and there, to catch up on my Kindle Unlimited TBR and then unsubscribe. Because when life throws all the books at you, sometimes it’s easier to rely on a library than a subscription service!
That being said, as fantastic as I think libraries are (and obviously, I do), they don’t always have all the books. Hence: Kindle Unlimited! It took me a long time to warm up to digital books, but now that I have, I’m feeling a little spoiled. The way OverDrive pricing is going and the bottleneck it poses to check out eBooks through the library has recently had me running to Kindle Unlimited more often, for better or worse. So today, I thought I’d highlight some KU reads that I’m excited to try!
This week’s Top Ten Tuesday are books on my Kindle Unlimited list I’m looking forward to reading. So if you’re looking to build out your own KU TBR, give these books a look-see!
Technically, this week is supposed to be books with honorifics in the title, buuuut . . . I have very few of those on my list. Having just recently picked up Kindle Unlimited again, though, I figured that was as good a topic as any!
I want to preface this by saying I am in no way encouraging or advocating for people to buy Kindle Unlimited. Actually, all of the books on this list are available in other formats, so you do you. This just happens to be the current list of KU books that I’m looking forward to picking up, and if you’re roving through the endless list of available books and want some recommendations, maybe give these a go.
(Also, if you have any must-read recommendations for me, please drop them in the comments! I’m always looking for things to add to my own list!)

Storm and Sea

Atreus has carved out a quiet, stable life among humans on the island of Baia Vita, earning their respect while hiding a dangerous he is Mer. Exiled by his own people for the color of his scales, he has learned to navigate life as an outsider, finding solace in the rhythms of the fishing village. But his fragile peace is shattered when Nyel, a naïve and determined runaway Mer fleeing the suffocating traditions of his home, lands on the island.
Nyel’s arrival disrupts everything Atreus has built. Though they clash at first, their growing friendship—and the flicker of something more—forces both men to confront the prejudices and traditions that shaped them. But their personal struggles are interrupted when a powerful criminal family begins stripping Baia Vita’s bay of fish, threatening the village’s survival. As starvation looms, Atreus and Nyel must join forces to save the humans they’ve both come to care for. Yet, with their secrets on the verge of exposure, they must tread carefully. After all, the very people they hope to protect might destroy them first.
Storm and Sea is a heart-wrenching novel by Tereza Kane. If you enjoy found family, mythical creatures, and LGBTQ+ representation in fantasy, you’ll love this captivating tale of acceptance, betrayal, and finding a home in the unlikeliest people.
First Lines:
“M . . . mi . . . misteei?”
Atreus narrowed his eyes, demanding the letters on the page stay still.
“M—mistray—m . . .”
Atreus stumbled over the jumble of letters. The more he stared at the washed-up newspaper, the more the words taunted him.

All Superheroes Need PR

Over two decades ago, forty-eight young, gifted superheroes fell to Earth and were eventually marketed as opposing heroes and villains. Now, one exceptionally gruff bad guy is looking to hop teams. Hello, PR director Vanessa Theriot.
His real name is Roland Casteel a.k.a. the Pyro. First, swap that with the less incinerating the Wyvern. Next, put him in spandex to highlight that near-godlike body. Finally, give that hero in training a heroine—if Vanessa will play the part in a pretend romance guaranteed to make the city swoon. She’s game. As shy as Vanessa is, it’s her job to be Roland’s very own Lois Lane. Who knew that fake dating would change their worlds?
But falling head over heels for real makes for a dangerous shift in the narrative. A monstrous supervillain is bringing out Roland’s bad side again. This time, it’s to save a woman who, against all the odds, is becoming the human love of his superhero life.

I shuffle the papers in front of me, arranging them until they’re perfectly fanned across the conference room table, the headline of each newspaper now visible. My gaze snags on the headline from the London Champions Daily, the third largest newspaper globally and the single largest newspaper whose content is exclusively dedicated to the Forty-Eight.
Taranis, master of lightning, saves pediatric surgeon from collapsing at hospital, states, “Some heroes wear white coats, not capes.”

BuyMort: Grand Opening

When humanity finally fell, it wasn’t to war or disease—it was to shopping. BuyMort, the newest and last store to set up shop on Earth. The end of the world as everyone knew it.
Welcome to the Shopocalypse, the everything-must-go never again sales event that just lost us our world.
But not everything is lost. Meet Tyson, a no-cares slacker with a traumatic past, two wrinkled bucks in his wallet and a crap job caretaking a crap campground in the desert sands of Arizona. He had a deal with the world. He didn’t change it, and it didn’t change him. Seemed simple enough.
His world lost, monsters running rampant, and people dying everywhere he looks, it’s time to rise up from his dark past and become something he was never capable of being. It is time for him to be a hero. It is time for him to become the Windowpuncher!
First Lines:
So, one peaceful October morning, I was doing my usual. Mowing the lawn around the campground pool, pretending each blade of grass was one of the guests and listening to a little Nietzsche Wasn’t Read, my favorite band. Just pretending it was going to be a perfect day. No day ever is but I was right at that moment where I was still stupid and groggy enough to believe in miracles.
That’s when fire began to rain from the sky.

The Fox and the Dragon

There’s little difference between a god’s blessing, and a god’s curse …
A shrine maiden blessed by the gods, Shen’s life is devoted to banishing the dark spirits and demons that plague the war-torn lands. A life she’s stolen from when the Anui abduct her. Forced to marry their barbarian lord and held captive in a hostile land, Shen must conceal she possesses an unearthly power. One her people have wielded against the Anui in their ruthless war, that will get her killed, or worse, if she’s discovered.
For Shen to survive, she must master a part of her that she cannot yet control, and cannot hide for long.
Kisho never intended to take a wife. Not when the war between Anu and Huli drags on without end, a blight born of unholy magic threatens all creation, and certainly not when he suffers a goddess’ curse. But he never expected to fall in love with Shen, whose spiritual power goes far beyond that of a Hulin shrine maiden. Try as she might, she cannot hide her true nature from Kisho, and he cannot hide her from those who seek to harm her.
To save his people, Kisho accepted a goddess’ curse. To save Shen, he must make a greater sacrifice.
First Lines:
“We’ll stop here for the night,” Sacha said. He lifted the blindfold off Shen and she recoiled from the light.
The late afternoon sun shone brilliant after hours of darkness. Her eyes itched from the cloth and the surrounding forest was hostile with unfamiliarity. Dark pine stood tall and foreboding, the mountain rock was storm grey instead of the pale white and yellow she grew up with, and if the iron cast sky cleared, she was sure nightfall would reveal the heavens held different stars.

Susan, You’re the Chosen One

One moment, Susan Moore had the perfect life—a handsome husband, a fabulous career, wonderful friends, and a gorgeous home in Pacific Heights, San Francisco.
The next minute, it was all gone. And Susan found herself in a straitjacket, locked in a padded room.
An optimist at heart, Susan’s clawing her way back, rebuilding her life brick by brick—not an easy feat when you’re over the hill and it feels like the whole city hates you.
But when a group of ridiculously gorgeous models in Fae cosplay barge into her tiny apartment and declare her to be the chosen one, Susan decides to play along. She’s off to save the world.
Except they’re not in cosplay.
Either Susan has really, truly gone insane this time… or all this magic is real.
First Lines:
“Hey!” I hissed, keeping my voice low. I didn’t want to startle the people who’d interrupted my dinner party by setting off fireworks and making a racket on the communal rooftop garden. All four of them were balanced precariously on the wall, facing away from me, looking out over the city—and, weirdly enough, wearing what looked like Lord of the Rings elf cosplay.

The Dungeon Slayer

Dungeons are appearing all over the Earth. The skies are darkening as the dungeons emit more and more blackness that threatens to block out the sun entirely. Humanity is scrambling. Slayers race to close every dungeon that appears. Slayers were once normal people, but they have become special. At age 16, Rebirth unlocked their inner potential.
Tad Harrington is an unlikely hero, and yet, the morning of his Rebirth has arrived. Bullied relentlessly in life and at school, he looks to his rebirth with both hope and dread in equal measures. His whole life could change in an instant – he could be gifted with fame, money, and power…
Only one fact stands in his way – 99% of Rebirths are duds.
And he’s never been that lucky.
He is right about one thing: his whole life is about to change, though not in the way he expects. In a world where everyone else has power gifted to them, Tad gains a unique ability that allows him to level up. He will have to climb through all the ranks, earning every shred of strength he can grasp, or die trying.
First Lines:
“We now know humanity’s greatest lie. That all individuals are equal. That humans have infinite potential. Those statements are false. The discovery of rebirth has shown only the elect have infinity capacity, the rest of us, less so. Much less so.”
Tad Harrington turned off the video in the darkness of his bedroom. Today was the day. The day of his rebirth. He would never be the same after today. There was no going back. His inner strength would be exposed for all to see. In public. In front of his peers.

Kidnapping Phoenixes and Other Ways to Die

A demonic hedgehog, a homicidal tooth-fairy, a Phoenix with multiple personality disorder…and Francis.
They’re on the run from the Paranormal Mob.
What could go wrong?
My name is Frances. Not the name you’d expect from someone on the run from the paranormal mob.
You know, ogres with machine guns, kind of mob.
But when the unborn ashes of the Phoenix ask for help, well, what’s a girl gonna do? I stole her urn from the mob and went on the run.
Now I’m hiding in small town Indiana, where I work as a medic for fantastical beasts. I should be safe here, right?
But the mob aren’t the only ones looking for the Phoenix.
An ancient evil is searching for her in hopes to usher in Armageddon.
Now I have a choice to make: abandon the Phoenix and run, or stop these supernatural bullies and beasts from harnessing the Phoenix’s magic for evil.
Like I said, what’s a girl gonna do?
First Lines:
Frances Austin.
I know what you’re thinking. Sounds like some frump destined to die under a pile of cats with an unfinished cross-stitch in one hand and a burnt-out vibrator in the other.
But not this Frances. This Frances grew up trekking across North America in the back of a Winnebago with her free-spirited mother chasing after bands on . . . country western music. Ugh.

The Tinker & The Witch

Come sit by the hearth and enjoy a pint and well packed pipe with Andrew, a seventeen-year-old tinker from a nearby swamp, in this feel-good slice of life, as he tells a tale of tree horses, Night Watchmen and the mythical being covered in eyes that grants dangerous wishes. It’s Eden Vale, a Festival of Lights, in Jatoba, a cozy village nestled high in the hills where Andrew is trying to ply his trade when a blizzard forces him into the leaning cottage on the edge of town that everyone fears.
When Lorna, a powerful witch whose memory is locked inside a sentient chest, saves Andrew’s life, he is compelled to find a way to help her. This sends him on a scavenger-hunt-type adventure in search of a way to open the particularly moody chest holding Lorna’s memories, secrets, and clues to their shared past.
On his journey, Andrew falls in love, enjoys a cup of tea with unique and powerful creatures, and is granted a dangerous and costly wish to help Lorna and ultimately himself.
First Lines:
A cold wind stirred eddies of deep-purple leaves blanketing the ground. The only light this deep in the forest and this late at night was the faint glow of a single hearth through the wavy glass windows of a cracked and leaning cottage. Standing in the front window, unmoving, was an old woman looking out at the moonlight.

There’s Something Wrong with the Cats

Curiosity didn’t kill the cat, it mutated it into a vigilante crime fighter.
Dan’s cats are acting weird. One has grown into a strength powerhouse, the other wants to communicate… verbally. And now other kitties have begun to go missing from his quiet suburban street. Could the man in the parka that haunts a nearby industrial estate have answers? Or perhaps it’s something to do with the strange disappearing woman in the woods? Can our hero figure out the conspiracy before it turns into a catastrophe?
First Lines:
The call me The Night. The Shadow That Stalks Behind. The Dark One.
My brother and I go to war.
I hunt as if my life depends on it, for I know hers does. And she is my everything.
My prey, you ask?
Probably the old man in the suit. or maybe that blonde woman over there. Or perhaps The Disappearing Ones.
Definitely that squirrel.

Dragon of Ash & Stars

Stormfall is a dragon born with a coat the colour of a starry night. When a violent storm strikes his island aerie, he is carried on hurricane winds into the complicated and sometimes cruel world of men. There, his journey takes him from fisher dragon to farmer, pit-fighting dragon to warrior, each step leading him closer to a remarkable destiny. But war is coming to the land of Remus and with it, a crossroads for the Night Dragon and the young soul-boy he allows on his back. How far is Stormfall willing to go in a war that is not his own?
First Lines:
I don’t remember much of my time in the shell, but what I do remember is good.
Warm, quiet, calm. The music of my heart, the rhythm of hot blood, the simmering acid in my belly. I believe I dreamed, but of what, I cannot say, for there was nothing in the shell to dream about. But dragons are a fantastical clan. Our minds have no equal; our imaginations no limit.

Okay, I’m going to have to look up There’s Something Wrong With The Cats!
I absolutely love that title and cover! It’s hard not to be immediately curious about it. 😀
Dragon of Ash and Stars has a cool cover.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
Yeah it does! Even though I may be slightly biased because . . . y’know . . . dragons.
I rely on my local library for almost everything I read. Like you, I also sign up for subscription services briefly when there’s something I want to read or watch on them. And then I cancel and save my money. 😂
I’m glad it’s not just me! I sometimes feel bad for it, but I know if I had it all the time, it would just be a waste, because I’m usually trying to catch up on other books. xD
These look like great picks! I agree with your way of doing Kindle Unlimited… I have an ongoing KU reading list, and then every now and then I’ll subscribe when they offer a good deal so that I can read down that list.
I’m excited to see that others do this, too! I enjoy being able to support KU authors when I can, though.
I’m the same way. I subscribe when they have good deals going on and cancel when they don’t. In fact, I just cancelled my subscription today because I’m not willing to pay $13/month for it, especially when I was paying 99 cents/month before that. I love that it exists, though, and sometimes the higher price IS worth it for me. It just depends. I hope you enjoy these KU books!
Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!
Susan

I’m glad that this seems like a normal tactic! I’m low-key pretty salty that KU often offers the discount prices (like $0.99 per month) for people who aren’t currently subscribed but don’t provide perks, benefits, or discounts to those who regularly subscribe. So they’re basically promoting the subscribe/unsubscribe culture. Right now, I don’t mind paying for a couple months, because I’m reading through a long series and I know the price is definitely worth it. 🙂
I have heard of almost none of these books before, but they all intrigue me. The only one I have heard of All Superheroes Need PR, and I have been looking into reading that one, but now I have a bunch of others to look into. There’s Something Wrong With Cats and Storm and Sea are two that I feel the need to read soon, but I do like the summaries to all of the other ones as well.
My library actually got a copy of All Superheroes Need PR, and I had intended to grab it . . . but it went out before I called dibs. T_T But I’m glad I can still grab it on KU rather than waiting lol. I hope you enjoy these when you get a chance to read them!
