Non-Scary Reads for Spooky Season Still On My TBR

Spooky season is a bit of a conundrum for me, because I don’t read a whole lot of horror books (I’m a huuuuge scaredy cat), but I absolutely love all the spooky vibes. So what is a poor, chickeny bookwyrm to do?

Make their own spooky season reading list, of course! One that fully captures the vibes without the terror-inducing sensation. My doctor will thank me later, I’m sure, considering I’ve been battling high blood pressure. I don’t think she would approve of me giving myself a heart attack and/or stroke. Not even if it’s in the spirit of the season! (A bit of a Debbie downer, I know.)

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is a Halloween freebie, so I want to focus on some non-scary books that are still on my TBR that I’m looking forward to reading during this spooky season!

By spooky season, I obviously don’t mean just Halloween. Why limit ourselves like that? Nah. For me, basically the entirety of Fall is the perfect time to read spooky stories. It’s a whole aesthetic. Trust me, it makes perfect sense.

Small caveat: since I haven’t read these, I don’t actually know that they’re not scary. I’m just relying on blurbs, first impressions, and reviews. All of these touch on the things that make spooky season great (minus the guts and gore): vampires and ghosts and monsters, oh my!

The Many Misfortunes of Eugenia Wang

Twelve-year-old Eugenia Wang has never celebrated her birthday on her actual birthday, April 4th, because of her mom’s belief in the Chinese superstition that four is an unlucky number. And that’s not the only thing Mom’s strict about; she won’t let Eugenia go to a summer comic art camp because she thinks art is a waste of time. This year, Eugenia is determined to defy her mom by applying for the camp, having her party on her actual birthday, and inviting her super cute crush while she’s at it, too!

But when Eugenia gets hit in the head with a sneaker during PE, she starts getting unnerving visions of impending doom about her upcoming birthday. It might be the aftereffects of her head injury, or maybe she’s just anxious about turning thirteen. Grave Birds

And she learns all about the horrible things these noble families did to gain their wealth. Hollis can’t decide if Cain is some immortal hand of God, there to expose their sins. Or if he’s a devil there to ruin them all. Either way, she’s determined to save her town and the people in it, whatever she has to do.

This Princess Kills Monsters

Soon, she has to contend with near-constant attempts on her life, a talking lion that sets bewildering gender tests, and a king who can’t recognize his true love when she puts on a pair of trousers. And all the while, she has to fight her growing attraction to not only one of the huntsmen, but also her fiancé’s extremely attractive sister.

If Melilot can’t unravel the mysteries and rescue herself from peril, kingdoms will fall. Worse, she could end up married to someone she doesn’t love.
