Bout of Books || Did Someone Say Read-a-thon?

Posted August 19, 2018 by Sammie in #amreading, readathon / 7 Comments

It may surprise exactly none of you that I am a big sucker for read-a-thons.

Something about books and throwing caution to the wind so you can read as much as humanly possible in a set amount of time. It sounds totally exciting, right?

Well, this week, from Monday through Sunday, will be the Bout of Books read-a-thon.

And guess who’s participating? I sort of meant me, but … well, I suppose it could be you, too. I mean, who doesn’t love reading all the books, right? Also, talking with other people who love books. Really, there’s not a downside here. I mean, your sleep might suffer, but sleep is overrated anyway.

About The Read-a-thon

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 20th and runs through Sunday, August 26th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 23 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

My Read-a-thon List

I’m going to choose seven books for my challenge to-read list. I am 99% sure I will not get through all seven but … weirder things have happened, right?

The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell – I’ve been on a dystopia kick lately, and this sounded brilliant. It’s also super long and will probably take most of the week, but oh well.

Paper and Fire by Rachel Caine – I read the first one and enjoyed it. I have a new OTP thanks to this series, which I hope to see more of.

The Seasons of My Mother by Marcia Gay Harden – Way overdue to read this, but I started to read it and then my grandmother fell ill and passed away, and it seemed like really bad timing. But I need at least one nonfiction book on this list, and I loved what I read of this so far.

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young – Sounds like a strong female character, plus war? Where do I sign?

The Dragon Queen by William Andrews – Read and enjoyed the first. Been meaning to follow up and read this one. This seems like a good time to get around to it.

The Three Hares: Bloodline by Geoffrey Simpson – Another one I’ve been meaning to read. It just sounds so cute, and I need something lighter on this list, darn it!

The Unbinding of Mary Reade by Miriam McNamara – PIRATES. Female pirates, in fact! Really, need I say more?

  1. Good luck! I’ll probably won’t have time for a readathon with Merijn’s birthday at the end of the week and my parents staying after. Must make house presentable >.>

  2. Ohh good luck with the read-a-thon! I really enjoyed Sky in the Deep, and I hope you do too! Also. How did I not know that The Last Magician is dystopian!?!? Now I need to read it, ugh! Paper and Fire also looks really good, I need to get to it one of these days. Hope you have a great time reading!!

    • Thank you! To be fair, The Last Magician is … so many things? It’s dystopian and urban fantasy/historical, I think? I don’t even know. It’s really hard to qualify. But if you’re big into dystopian, now that I’m 25% into it, I wouldn’t lean too heavily on that. It feels more the other things (even though it’s obviously set in a dystopia, but it doesn’t have the sort of dystopian “feel” or tropes).

Paper and Fire has given rise to my second favorite OTP of all time now. And I can’t even talk about it because it’s really minor spoilers. But gah. It’s so adorable.

  3. I’ve never participated in a read-a-thon! I always mean to but I end up being late haha or life gets in the way
Good luck, I hope you manage to read as much as possible! Looking forward to updates😊

    • It’s not too late to join this one, if you want. 😉 Sign-ups officially end today, I think. And thanks! Any time I get to read a lot, I see it as a win.
