Outrageous Characters I Can’t Help But Love

The most memorable characters for me are the outrageous ones. You know who they are: the characters who are so ridiculous or so out there or so extra that they force you to love them.

They’re so over the top, and I love every single minute of it. I don’t always like these characters, but they’re so memorable that I just have to love them. Even if I’m rooting for their death. I mean, that’s kind of like rooting for them, right?

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is about outrageous things I’ve done for the love of books. But since, in general, I’m not an outrageous person, I have none of these experiences. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So I’ll just let the characters speak for themselves.

Heart Divider

✦ Scythe Goddard from Scythe

✿ Probably the most extra character you will ever meet
✿ Adds flair to everything—killing, dressing, speaking
✿ You know what Scythe robes were missing? GEMSTONES.
✿ I’m honestly surprised there’s no glitter yet …
✿ You cross him, the revenge is going to be complicated …
✿ But also so extra that people will never stop talking about it

Even before guests started to arrive and the first of five DJs cranked up the music, Goddard threw his arms wide in the mansion’s ornate living room as if he could reach from wall to wall, and said to no one in particular, “I am in my element, and my element is hydrogen burning in the heart of the sun.”

✦ Warlock Holmes from Warlock Holmes

✿ Could easily get up and do things, but … magic is so much easier
✿ Magic solves everything … unless it backfires
✿ Voices in head are real
✿ Also demons (but demons are people, too)
✿ Death is really just a minor inconvenience

“Watson, if anyone calls and says they are the physical embodiment of Amon-Ra, I am not in!”

✦ Marcella from Vengeful

✿ Beautiful, sharp, taken for granted, and with an ax to grind
✿ Which is a wonderful combination for disaster
✿ Told to sit still and look pretty one too many times
✿ All too happy to show the men just what a woman can do
✿ Homicide is hard work, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look great doing it

Perhaps she was glass. But glass is only brittle until it breaks. Then it’s sharp.

✦ Lightsong from Warbreaker

✿ Being a deity is a downright hassle.
✿ So is talking to people
✿ Might die if sarcasm doesn’t come out of his mouth every two minutes.
✿ Might not, but … eh, why chance it?
✿ Likes to play mind games with people because why the frig not?
✿ If they’re too stupid to keep up, that’s their fault.
✿ Is ridiculously extra in the most wonderful ways.

“That’s some very solid reasoning, Your Grace.”
“I know,” Lightsong said. “I feel positively unlike myself. Perhaps I need to go get drunk.”
“You can’t get drunk.”
“Ah, but I certainly enjoy trying.”

✦ Max from The Chronicles of St. Mary’s

✿ *sigh* Historians. Am I right?
✿ Sarcasm is on point, at a pro level
✿ If ever a mission goes according to plan … just wait for it
✿ Fangirls over history like a weirdo
✿ But okay, live dinosaurs are pretty dang cool

“Can you shoot? Have you ever fired a weapon? Can you ride? Can you swim? How fit are you?”
“No. No. Yes. Yes. Not at all.”
He paused and looked me up and down. “Could you kill a man?”
I looked him up and down. “Eventually.”

✦ Goblin King from Wintersong

✿ Trying very hard to be romantic and woo his love
✿ Because wooing should start from childhood? Wait …
✿ Super dark and brooding and mysterious
✿ In other words, obviously swoonworthy
✿ But also really concerned about Liesl’s well-being?
✿ Could solve a lot of problems by being honest, but … ehh
✿ Much easier to be vague and say nothing

“I am the Lord of Mischief, the Ruler Underground,” he said, mismatched eyes glinting. “I am wildness and madness made flesh. You’re just a girl”—he smiled, and the tips of his teeth were sharp—“and I am the wolf in the woods.”

✦ Granny from My Grandmother
Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry

✿ Best. Storyteller. Ever.
✿ Swears enough to make a sailor blush
✿ Could even teach them a few new words
✿ Master at sarcasm. Should teach me.
✿ The old lady everyone should strive to be
✿ Has zero fucks left to give about what anyone thinks
✿ Is not prepared to take crap from anybody

“Put ‘Pennsylvania Railroad’ back,” says Elsa tersely.
“I bought it . . . ?” Granny tries.
“Mmm, sure you did. Put it back.”
“This is how it must have been playing bloody Monopoly with Hitler!”
“Hitler would only have wanted to play Risk,” mutters Elsa, because she’s checked out Hitler on Wikipedia, after there were some rows between her and Granny about her use of Hitler as a metaphor.
“Touché,” mutters Granny.

✦ Zaphod Beeblebrox from
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

✿ Arguably one of the most extra characters ever written
✿ Possibly also the most useless
✿ Two heads, for twice the drama!
✿ Pretty sure his liver’s been shot for decades now

If there’s anything more important than my ego around, I want it caught and shot now.

    • He was easily my favorite character in that series. Maybe tied with Marvin, because Marvin was pretty spectacular himself lol

  1. Fun list! Reminds me that I need to get back to reading Scythe again. I had to return it before I finished it and never got back to picking it back up.
Also ‘Could solve a lot of problems by being honest, but … ehh’ literally the most accurate statement ever!

    • I highly recommend finishing it! Book 2, The Thunderhead, is even better than the first, and the last book comes out in September, so this would be a good year to be able to read the whole trilogy together. 😉 The Thunderhead broke me just a little.

    • Oh, I haven’t read that, but man, that sounds like an interesting character. xD But also, I want vampire bunny slippers LOL.

  2. suicidesamblog

Zaphod Beeblebrox definitely belongs on a list of Most Outrageous Characters – love him and love Hitchhiker’s Guide 🙂

  3. I laughed my way through this one. You make me want to give Warlock Holmes a chance. I’ve avoided it because I think the character would drive me nuts.

Your Zaphod description and quote are PERFECT.

    • I’m glad you liked it! This was probably one of my favorite lists to have made, and now I want to revisit all these characters again. xD

I highly recommend Warlock Holmes! I’ve been waiting (not very) patiently for the next one, which came out this month, so it’ll be another month or two before my library has it. If I’m honest, the first book in the series was sort of meh to me, because I just didn’t like the plot. The other two books so far, though? Hilarious. I couldn’t stop laughing.

Warlock Holmes WILL drive you nuts, but in a good way? Because wow, thank goodness Watson has to put up with him and not you. xD I think it was a good choice that the story is told from Watson’s perspective, because his personality is so grounded and logical that it makes a really nice sharp contrast with Warlock’s. That’s why I think it works, anyway. :3

    • Ha, I’m so glad! Talking about these characters has me wanting to read them again. xD Never underestimate the draw of an outrageous character!
