It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
What constitutes too much coffee in a day?
Who says I can’t have just one more cup?
Why is all the coffee gone?

Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @Taking on a World of Words.

Recently Finished
The Unbinding of Mary Reade The Anomaly

The Unbinding of Mary Reade by Miriam McNamara
★★★✩✩ || Goodreads
This was less piratey goodness and swashbuckling adventure and more … F/F romance. Which is part of why I picked it up, but I assumed the pirateness would be in the foreground, and it wasn’t. It read more like a soap opera. I wasn’t on board for any of the relationships, so that made it more difficult. I did like the self-discovery aspect of the book and Mary Reade deciding who she wants to be.

The Anomaly by Michael Rutger
★★★✩✩ || Goodreads
Bit of a slow start, but eventually, it became a pretty thrilling archaeology adventure that mixes two of my biggest fears: trapped in an enclosed space and darkness. I loved the banter between the characters. Unfortunately, not a big fan of how it ended. It was a bit too far-fetched for my tastes, which destroyed the last third of the book for me. The sequel, though, sounds promising, and maybe a bit less … out there?

I Can't Date Jesus: Love, Sex, Family, Race, and Other Reasons I've Put My Faith in Beyoncé

I Can’t Date Jesus: Love, Sex, Family, Race, and Other Reasons I’ve Put My Faith in Beyoncé by
Michael Arceneaux

In the style of New York Times bestsellers You Can’t Touch My HairBad Feminist, and I’m Judging You, a timely collection of alternately hysterical and soul‑searching essays about what it is like to grow up as a creative, sensitive black man in a world that constantly tries to deride and diminish your humanity.

It hasn’t been easy being Michael Arceneaux.

Equality for LGBT people has come a long way and all, but voices of persons of color within the community are still often silenced, and being black in America is…well, have you watched the news?

With the characteristic wit and candor that have made him one of today’s boldest writers on social issues, I Can’t Date Jesus is Michael Arceneaux’s impassioned, forthright, and refreshing look at minority life in today’s America. Leaving no bigoted or ignorant stone unturned, he describes his journey in learning to embrace his identity when the world told him to do the opposite.

He eloquently writes about coming out to his mother; growing up in Houston, Texas; that time his father asked if he was “funny” while shaking his hand; his obstacles in embracing intimacy; and the persistent challenges of young people who feel marginalized and denied the chance to pursue their dreams.

I’m not too terribly far into this so far, but I’m enjoying it so far! I didn’t know who Michael Arceneaux was when I picked this up, and I refuse to look it up until I finish the book, so I can just enjoy it for what it is. His tone and perspective so far has been interesting and fun to read.

Upcoming Reads
The Waking Forest

I’ve been meaning to read this for a while. It sounds all creepy and ominous and mysterious, and I am all for this.

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1)

I’ve had so many people recommend this book, and I’ve been meaning to read it. My hold finally came through, so I’d better get to it before I lose my opportunity!

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor, #1)

This one was recommended to me by the lovely Annemieke at A Dance With Books. I’ve been looking at it on and off and debating whether or not to pick it up, but since it comes highly recommended … Also, I’m feeling in the mood for something a bit more … whimsical? And this feels like a pretty good candidate.

    • Ha, I’m glad to hear that! I definitely have to read The Waking Forest next (since it’s due back) so maybe I’ll make sure to put Nevermoor as my second. :3 I usually like middle grade, and I’ve really been striking out lately, so I’m hoping that this will pull me out of that slump!

Very intrigued by I Can’t Date Jesus, would love to know what you think when you’re finished!

    • You’ll have to check in again next week. xD So far, at 15%, I’m really enjoying it. Personal essays are sort of hit or miss for me, but this one’s a bit funny and relatable, even though I really don’t have much in common on the surface with the author. So … stay tuned! xD

  2. I don’t know Michael either but his story sounds interesting and important. The book title is catchy too I hope you will enjoy all your current and upcoming reads. Have a fab week.

    • Thank you! The book title is definitely what caught my attention, and I’m waiting for the essay where it comes into play, because I’m sure it’ll be an interesting story. xD

I hope you like Illuminae, I loved the format but it overall wasn’t for me sadly.

  4. Great list of books this week! I just recently heard about The Unbinding of Mary Reade and thought it looked good from the description. Sorry to hear that it doesn’t quite hold up. Hope you have a wonderful week of reading!

    • If you go in expecting romance, you’re likely better to enjoy The Unbinding of Mary Reade. I’m not a huge fan of romance. I like it as a subplot, and it was more the focus of the book, so that was part of the problem for me. But that’s a pretty personal thing. 🙂

  5. Omgoodness, the cover for The Waking Forest is absolutely stunning 😱 I’m going to go check out what it’s about on GR right now! I added Michael Arceneaux’s book to my TBR at the end of last year–I laughed out loud when I saw that title. It definitely sounds like it’d be a fun read. Hope you’re still enjoying it (or enjoyed it, if you’re done)!

    • Isn’t it?! The blurb caught my attention, too. I hope it’s as good as it sounds. xD

It is an amazingly catchy title, and I’m still waiting for the titular essay (which I’m sure is coming). I’m 2/3 of the way through it, and loving every minute. I plan on finishing it tomorrow. Definitely one of the better memoirs I’ve read recently!

      • I just read the blurb (for Waking Forest) and it sounds amazing! I’ve now added it to my TBR 😂 Also can’t wait to read your review about the memoir!

        • I’ve just started Waking Forest, so I have no opinions yet, but doesn’t it?! I’ve heard such good things about it, so I’m excited to read it.

The memoir was great! Should have a review up in time for my WWW Wednesday post. 😉

  6. Illuminate and Nevermoor are Porto on my list, but I am keeping them for bad times, since these are my 5 star expectations))
Walking Forest looks very creepy. Enjoy it!

    • That’s a good way to do it! I’m a little side-eyeing Illuminae, because I’m really weird and super picky with anything that’s too heavy sci-fi. But everyone else seems to love it, so either I will too or … I’m broken? I don’t know. xD

  7. Ah a fellow coffee addict, we should form a support group. I actually had cut back to one cup per day but lately I’ve been slip sliding more than a Sunday Christian.

    • Ugh, I feel your pain! I’ve had to cut back to one cup a day, too, unfortunately. It’s a sad state to live in, and eventually, I should be cutting back to drinking it infrequently, but … gosh, I love my coffee. xD
