WWW Wednesday (April 1, 2020)

It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
What if the demons were escaping their prison?
Would you join the ranks of the angels?
Would you fight in the upcoming war?

Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

The Last Human     Cursed     The Empress of Salt and Fortune     Wicked Saints

The Last Human by Zack Jordan
★★★★ || Goodreads
I’m starting to reconsider my previous position about not liking space opera because this is, like, the third space opera I’ve read and loved. Clearly, I was hasty in my judgment. This book was funny, in a tongue-in-cheek, sarcastic sense, which is my favorite sort. It was also packed full of action and philosophy and so many wonderful themes.

Cursed by Marie O’Regan and Paul Kane
★★★★ || Goodreads
I was lucky enough to be on the blog tour for this, and it was every bit as dark and twisted as I hoped it would be! Dark fairy tales are the best fairy tales. I’m actually not even sure how to describe this anthology, so I suggest if you’re curious, just click the stars and read my review.

The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo
★★★★ || Goodreads
This was a really interesting novella, told in the form of story-within-a-story. It’s a tale about strong women told by strong women. I loved how the women refused to be the frail, wilting flowers that the men expected of them.

Wicked Saints by Emily Duncan
★★★★★ || Goodreads
This book. THIS BOOK. I was so scared to read it, because it had so many mixed reviews, and I wanted to love it so much. I actually went out to buy it shortly after it came out … and then left it on my shelf for a year. Because the pressure to love it was so real. But love it I did! This had such a delicious enemies-to-lovers trope, mixed in with lots of bloody fighting and war and goodness. So many plot twists and turns. I just can’t wait to see what the next book has in store for these characters!

A Time of Dread

A Time of Dread by John Gwynne
Status: 35%

A race of warrior angels, the Ben-Elim, once vanquished a mighty demon horde. Now they rule the Banished lands, but their peace is brutally enforced.

In the south, hotheaded Riv is desperate to join the Ben-Elim’s peacekeeping force, until she unearths a deadly secret.

In the west, the giantess Sig investigates demon sightings and discovers signs of an uprising and black magic.

And in the snowbound north, Drem, a trapper, finds mutilated corpses in the forests. The work of a predator, or something far darker?

It’s a time of shifting loyalties and world-changing dangers. Difficult choices need to be made. Because in the shadows, demons are gathering, waiting for their time to rise…

I was so lucky to get a copy of this and A Time of Courage from Orbit. I’ve been wanting to read John Gwynne forever, considering how many times it’s been recommended to me. I’m glad that I’m finally getting a chance! I had a little bit of a hard time getting into it, because I struggle with multiple POVs. Once I hit about 20%, though, things really started heating up, and now shenanigans are afoot. SHENANIGANS, I TELL YOU. The dark, bloody, stabby kind. And yes, I am all for this.

    A Time of Blood         Ruthless Gods

Since book three of the Of Blood and Bone series comes out on the seventh, I’m working my way through the series. And this is a series, man. These books are thick. But this world is one I’m enjoying spending time in. A Time of Blood will be next and then A Time of Courage, hopefully in time for its release.

I’ll also be diving into Ruthless Gods as a buddy read with Dini @ DiniPandaReads. I whipped through Wicked Saints and absolutely loved it, and now I can’t wait for the second book. I’m dying to find out what’s going to happen!

  1. How did you finish four books since last week? I barely made one. 🙊 I don’t think I have heard of any of those though besides what you have told about the last human. 🙊
    Also, I really think there should be “The Menagerie” on your upcoming reads pile. Just, you know, a suggestion. 😇

  2. I’m so excited to be reading Ruthless Gods with you! Your WS review has hyped me up for it so yes, let’s do this 😍 I wonder if the others on the discord still want to join 😂 I’m really curious about Empress of Salt and Fortune! I’m not big on novellas but I’ve heard really good things about this one. Happy reading, Sammie!
