Friday 56 || Wicked Saints Worship Ruthless Gods

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

Prologue

There was a darkness. Vast and cold and alive. She could feel it breathing, shifting, wanting from her. There was nothing to stop it from consuming her.

First Lines

Serefin Meleski inhabited the sliver of night that was rife for betrayal. It was the time when knives were unsheathed, when plans were created and seen into fruition. It was a time for monsters.

56% Snippet

“I shouldn’t have done that. You’re not supposed to kiss the king.”

“If I take the signet ring off, will that help?”

“I’m going to hit you.”

“You’re not supposed to hit the king! I still have my ring on!”

Book Reveal

I gave you the most obvious clue about what this book is already, but … how could I not? That tagline is just epic and was begging to be thrown about, so I had to oblige.

Ruthless Gods

Darkness never works alone…

Nadya doesn’t trust her magic anymore. Serefin is fighting off a voice in his head that doesn’t belong to him. Malachiasz is at war with who–and what–he’s become.

As their group is continually torn apart, the girl, the prince, and the monster find their fates irrevocably intertwined. They’re pieces on a board, being orchestrated by someone… or something. The voices that Serefin hears in the darkness, the ones that Nadya believes are her gods, the ones that Malachiasz is desperate to meet—those voices want a stake in the world, and they refuse to stay quiet any longer.

This is a new weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next week’s prompt is: Easter free day.

Since Easter is all about eggs, I had to stop and think … what hatches from eggs? Why, dragons, of course! So I decided to do five dragon books on my TBR. For obvious reasons.

A Natural History of Dragons     dragon ops     What We Found in the Corn Maze and How It Saved a Dragon     Dragonslayer     The Bone Ships

  1. Happy Friday! 🙂
I’m currently reading Dead End by Nancy Mehl. I’m halfway through and I’m loving it so much. I’m on chapter 23, so I’ll share from there:
“Before Noah and Kaely left the restaurant, Noah called Chief Sawyer and told him about the note given to Kenny.”
Hope you have a great weekend filled with awesome reading time. 😊❤📖

    • Thanks! I hated to give it away, but that tagline just begged to be shared. I love it so much and think it’s so clever. xD

  2. Whoa, the quotes lead me in one direction, and the cover, title and summary in another. I’m still amazed at how much hiding the cover and title changes my impressions of the book. I guess I thought those things didn’t influence me much. Now I know they do. Thanks!

    Dragons are an awesome choice.

    • Oh, that’s really interesting. I think the title and cover definitely has a bigger impression on us than we initially think!

    • I don’t know that it’s horror, but it’s definitely dark fantasy, so it’s all bloody and dark. I don’t think there was anything particularly scary or horror-esque about it, though. I’m definitely enjoying it!

    • That’s one of the themes of the first book, that everybody is a monster in their own way. They’re just different kinds of monsters, basically. Not sure how true that is, but I did love it!

    • I’m not quite done with it, but it’s been soooo good so far! A brilliant dark fantasy read. I’m really enjoying it.

    • Not every book can work for everyone, unfortunately. 🙂 I was afraid I wouldn’t like it, too, so I’m so glad and relieved that I did. :3

  3. OMG IS SOMEONE KISSING SEREFIN!?!? 😱 I WANNA KNOW WHOO (I really hope you haven’t read that far ahead because if you have then haha I’m sorry to admit that I’m still at the beginning 🙈🙃)!!!

    • SPOILER ALERT: IT’S OBVIOUSLY ME, DUH, BECAUSE WHO ELSE WOULD BE KISSING MY MURDER KING?! But also … noooope. I only read what I needed to for this post, but I’m still at the beginning, too. xD

    • You should! It was a fantastic book. Thank you so much for the nomination and also the link! Sorry, I’m so hopelessly behind on my blog hopping, with everything going on right now.
