First Line Friday 56 || All The Mythical Creatures

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

Logan Wilde noticed the feathers as soon as he woke up.

There were five of them scattered across his gray carpet like autumn leaves.

A roar of thunder boomed in Logan’s ears as soon as he landed on the horse, as if he were in the middle of a storm cloud. The horse leaped forward into the lake in one mighty jump.

Logan yelled with alarm and then choked as the water closed over his head, pouring into his mouth. He let go of the horse’s mane and tried to push away from it, to swim to the surface.

But he was stuck to the horse’s back.

A magical force kept him pinned in place as the horse sank lower and lower—away from the air, away from the sky.

Lucas was drowning.

The Menagerie

Logan Wilde is accidentally drawn into the mysterious, dangerous world of the Menagerie when he discovers a griffin hiding under his bed . . . and it leads him straight to the weirdest girl in seventh grade, Zoe Kahn.

Zoe is panicking. Her family has been guarding the Menagerie for centuries. If they don’t get the cubs back fast, the whole place will be shut down. To save the griffins’ lives, she’s willing to break all the rules, even if it means letting an outsider like Logan help. But the real mystery remains: Is someone trying to sabotage the Menagerie?

Who let the griffins out . . .and why?

✿ If you don’t, Mari @ Tirilu will hunt you down and throw it at you.
✿ …or maybe that was just me, I dunno.
✿ All the mythical creatures you could ever want, and then some!
✿ DRAGONS! Because we all know those are the most important creature.
✿ Seriously. It’s so exciting seeing familiar mythical creatures that aren’t written about as often!
✿ Fun narrative voice that’s easy to pick up and fall into.
✿ Black cityfolk protagonist trying to fit into a small, rural town.
✿ Secret societies, which are always fun.

This is a weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next Monday’s prompt is: summer read.

For me, summer reads should be cold, because I’m so sick of being hot. I’ve already got the sun and the beach, I don’t want to read more about it to remind me how much I’m melting. Instead, I love to read books set in cold settings, to remind me of how green the grass is on the other side. Erm … or rather, how white the snow is? Something like that.

Voyage of the Frostheart     Nevertell     The Bear and the Nightingale     The Golem and the Jinni     Angel and Bavar

I’ve been wanting to read Voyage of the Frostheart for a while and just haven’t gotten my hands on it, but it looks so stinking cute, and I think I’ll love it! I know this was on my post last week, too, but I’ve really been staring it on Amazon lately, deciding whether I want to just buy it and sink my teeth into something a little chilly, so it’s here because it’s been top of mind for me.

Nevertell is sent in Siberia, and look at how chilly that cover looks! Brrr. I love it. I also love the idea of shadow wolves, and now I need a pack of them, too.

I’m not sure how it does it, but The Bear and the Nightingale looks both wintery and cozy, which makes it the perfect summer read, honestly.

I’m not sure that The Golem and the Jinni really counts as a “wintry” sort of read, but there’s snow on the cover, and it’s all in cool shades of blue, which I love. At least it’s not reminding me how hot and melty I am!

This next book is a mid-grade Beauty and the Beast retelling with an absolutely stunning cover that I’m just so in love with. Angel and Bavar sounds like such a heartfelt read that you can get the chill of the cover mixed with some warm feels of the story, which obviously makes it a perfect summer pick!

  1. Happy Friday!
Today on my blog I’m sharing the first line from Love and a Little White Lie by Tammy L. Gray: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2020/07/17/first-line-friday-144/. It’s a really fun read. I’m currently on chapter 12, so I’ll share from there.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend filled with relaxing reading time. 😀❤📚

  2. I really like the 56%! I might have to do it too! The book sounds really good.

Please let me know how The Bear and The Nightingale goes. I checked it out from the library but never got a chance to start it.

    • *crosses fingers for you* I’ll keep an eye out to see how that goes. I’ll be curious to see if you end up enjoying it or not!
